Ebay Seller Fee Question

I'm going to be putting up a couple of Ebay auctions. I just read through the new rules regarding your first 5 ads of the month, and how you can either choose an 18% or $20 fee for the first five ads. After that, the fee for one of the items becomes 18% for the first $20, and 3.5% for the rest of the amount.

Example: If I l sell an item for $100 and it's one of my first five ads for the month, I get charged $18 in Ebay fees. But, if I'm not using the "first five ads" fee structure, I only have to pay $6.40 in Ebay fees.

So, my question is- if I sell that $100 item as one of my first five items, will I be charged the $18 or will they use the cheaper fee structure and charge me $6.40?

  • I would think it depends on which option you picked. Do you have to take the free auction listing, or can you list normal?

If you have to use the 5 free, It would fall under those rules, if not it would fall under normal fee structure.

  • I'm not sure, these will be the first auctions I've ever done.

Anyone, does it give you the option to choose the cheapest way to list?
  • Huh, I must be just using the default settings that charge fees based on the category. 18% sounds rediculously high. On a $100 BIN I was charged $10 and on a $95 BIN I was charged about $9.50 recently.

Not sure how it works with your first 5 though. What are you selling? Maybe BINs on CTCW is a better idea image Auctions with low feedback and in Canada are usually doomed for failure.
  • Any link to the rules you are talking about? Here's the eBay fee page:

    http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/fees.html

    Final value fees: Auction-style listings

    8.75% of the initial $25.00 ($2.19), plus 3.50% of the initial $25.01 - $1,000.00 ($34.12), plus 1.50% of the remaining closing value balance($1000.01 - closing value)

Fixed Price Listings (under video games category)

15.00% of the initial $50.00, plus 5.00% of the initial $50.01-$1,000.00, plus 2% of the remaining closing value balance ($1,000.01 - closing value)

As you can see, auction style is a no-brainer IMO, though the insertion fees are slightly higher. I still have no idea where 18% comes from though....

Also, if this isn't obvious already, make sure you sell your more expensive items first since those free insertion fees will save you more money. In other words, if you have a bunch of carts worth between $5-$50 to list, then list the $50 ones first.
  • Is he talking about that adsense affiliate thing? Or just something specific to ebay.ca that's set up differently from the US fee structure?
  • Oh, sorry, I didn't realize that you USA guys didn't get the new fee structure. Here's a link to what I'm talking about:

    http://pages.ebay.ca/sell/June2009/List5Free/index.html

As you can see, I was wrong about the number being 18%, it's 8.75%. So I wouldn't be losing as much money as I thought originally, but I'll still be losing a few extra bucks with the "first five" fee structure.
  • lol @ the fine print on that link above:

5 FREE Insertion Fees every 30 days, regardless of start price of the item*

*Excludes items with a Start/BIN/Reserve price of $18 million and above.

Darn, no free insertion fees on that private island I wanted to sell.
  • BTW, I haven't been getting charged for insertion fee of auctions on ebay.ca although BIN are $0.15 for insertion regardless of price.
  • The US has the 5 free insertions too, but they have higher final value fees. That's what allyourbase is talking about.

My question is. Do you have to take the free insertion , or can you go normal? is there an option?

He may be better off paying an insertion fee.

That's been my question all along.

I was just wondering if any Canadians on here had run into this. I guess not.

Anyways, I'll be listing some stuff in the next day or two. When I do, I'll let you guys know if it gives me the option to go normal or not. If not, it's a stupid policy, but I guess that helps them recoup some of the money they are losing with the $20 fees (ie JJ's NCC auction).
