Minor issue when playing NES on my TV

Hello,

I got 4:3 LCD TV in my room and I did find some issues with playing my NES on it.  Btw. my NES is NTSC and all games are also NTSC.

This is the model of TV that I got: http://images.ox.ee/0/8/3/99605.jpg

Just to mention, all games run without any problems but I encountered minor glitches on two games.

For example:

Super Mario Bros. 3. - When I fire it up, it's all OK no problems but when I start first level in on the left side of screen there is white horizontal line like picture should be indent a bit to the left. Here is example:

http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/584/60431087.jpg

This white space on left side is the same as it is on my screen, also Mario can walk to it but he stops when encounters that white line that means it's (for TV) end of the screen (imaginary?)

Ninja Gaiden - When cutscene plays for example - first cutscene where Ryu's fighter duels - there is nothing like this but only small horizontal blue line that is visible on left side of screen.

Super Mario Bros 1 - Almost the same thing as for Super Mario Bros 3. but more minor, very little.

When I try to play it on "regular TV" (the bulky ones that has catode in it, to be more precise that has big "hunch" in the back - standard TV) there is no of this issue so the problem is in the TV obvious.

On my LCD TV I don't have too much options but when I change aspects to 4:3, 16:9 or auto - it remains the same.

I did try couple of more options but no luck image

If you want - I can take picture of this so you can all see how it looks like.

Other games like Castlevania series and etc. dosen't have any of these problems.

Also to mention, SNES console and the SNES games dosen't have any of these problems.

Anyone has experience with this kind of stuff? Can I fix this in any way? Or just take it as it is and try not to be bothered by it too much?

If you need any more explanation of issue or information please  tell me and I will do my best to present it in better way.

Thank you very much!

  • Are you using a toploader or a toaster? If toaster, did you try switching from the A/V cables to the Coax jack, or vice versa?

    I use toaster.

Hmm, I didn't but I need to see if I can even use it on this TV. Keep in mind these games work normaln (no glitch) on other TV's like this one (CRT) - http://www.qatarliving.com/files/IMG_0639.jpg < this is the exact model games work on perfectly.

Also, when I use that "Coax Jack" where do I put it (I know where to put it in NES but where to put it into TV, pictures maybe?).

    Thanks.
  • If your TV doesn't have a coax input (many newer flatscreens do not anymore), you can pass through a DVD player. Most of them still have one. Unless you have one of those fancy blu-ray players.

If that won't work for you, I'm not familiar with your particular TV's input settings, but if playing around the programmable settings doesn't work perhaps someone else is familiar with Panasonic TVs? Sorry I'm not image
  • No, it dosen't have coax input. I can try using DVD for it but I need to check if it has coax input as well. Will see about that.

If anyone has more info about this it would be great image (about the issue itself).

    Thanks.
  • You do not need that cable, just use your scart thingy from the snes, gamecube or wii and the nice blue cables that are included with the nes.
  • I don't get it what you mean? I don't have "scart thingy" from SNES and what blue cables from NES?

What is your opinion anyways on this Ebay scart item? I can use it with my NTSC console even if it comes from UK? Should it fix the problem? Will it atleast make picture "more crisp" and etc. ?

    Thanks.
  • Well if it fixes the problem I do not know.

The nes came with two blue cables, a yellow AV cable and a Red audio cable. These hook up on the right of your nes.

You can put them directly into your tv (if your tv has input for this) or you can use a scart connector.

cannot find a picture of the blue cables, but they are standard av and audio cables. They came with every nes, at least in europe...

  • OK, anyways can someone give me any info about this Ebay SCART thing and does it work with both NTSC and PAL versions of NES? How ti "makes picture" better and should it solve my problem? Ofcourse, if anyone has experience with it...

    Thanks!

EDIT: Apparently it's caused by overscan on LCD TV's. Games designed back then were designed for tv's that didnt show the
entire picture sent to the tv by the source. LCD and other newer
    televisions show the whole picture.

But my question about SCART is still here: If I really have the money and SCART input, should I invest in it? Maybe it would fix the problem and make my picture better?

  • Also, I wanted to ask: if I try to use so called "PAL SNES SCART cable" on my NTSC SNES - is there possibility that I damage my NTSC SNES in any way or it will not display picture in worst case? Please answer.

    Thanks a bunch!
  • Using SCART A/V didn't fix te problem image Still, on left side there is that damn horizontal line image
  • The only way you'll get rid of the horizontal line is to use the TV settings to move the picture so that the line no longer shows.
  • Question is - how to adjust it as there is no such option in regular menu...
