The 5 screw version came out first. Then Nintendo got cheap and wanted to use less parts so they just started using 3 screws. So in the end the customer got screwed!
Some games have a 3 screw version and a 5 screw version in some cases one is more rare then another.
I have found that this is also another interesting way to keep your collection moving fwd even when you hit a wall. I have recently started looking/purchasing them just because I can.
