  • 1 - They are sort compatible, but they don't fit in the cartridge slot, so you need an adapter.

2 - Yes, as long as you have a proper power supply.

3 - Some games have a small amount of english text, but usually any heavy reading (rpgs) will be in japanese.

4 - If you have a super nintendo, you should just be able to get an adapter to play super famicom games on it.
  • Just watch out with the adapters. A cheap one fried my SNES. Then the middle of the line ones only have the middle connector that most games use but not the two on the edge that the FX chip games use.

If you get an adapter make sure you get a good quality one. Personally I have a Super Famicom, just because they look cooler then the SNES. All the connectors are the same except the power cord. You can't use the SNES power cord on the Super Famicom.

So when you get the SFC make sure it comes with a power cable. You can use SNES controllers and the thing that hooks it to the TV on the SFC. Also US games don't fit in the Super Famicom.
  • Adapter? Bah. Use a pair of cutters on the two plastic tabs inside your SNES and you've got a machine that plays both. (Google it for further instructions.)

I've been playing SFC games on my SNES for years.

Some have a good amount of english, some you can click through the japanese screens easy enough (fighting games come to mind), but forget the RPGs unless you just like cool music (they're all japanese text).

  • use this as a guide. Don't bother buying a Super Famicom

  • SFC's do look cool, but if you're only looking to play a few games, do the mod. If you're looking to actually collect SFC games, the systems are cheap enough (<$100)that you can pick one up to enjoy.

It's much faster to take needle nose pliers and rip the tabs out without removing the top of the snes.

I can mod a SNES to play Super Famicom games in like 30 seconds with pliers..  Just takes the right kind of pliers to cut/rip the tabs out.
  • If you use the cutting pliers, you can get them in there perfectly, clamp down, twist a few times, and it comes outta there perfect.

He shows you that at the end of the video. I believe opening it is the best way, but just going through the top works( just not as well from my experience).

  • Mason, if you want to go thru the top and have it look good, you heat up a butter knife slowly on the stove and slowly work the knife thru the plastic tabs, making a nice cleaner cut.. At least that's the method I used when i was 13 and the company didn't ship an adapter with my Super Famicom Street Fighter 2.. Hot butter knife, not too hot,but it works and looks good if you take your time.
  • Thanks for the advices guys .. i think im gonna wait a bit and order a Boxed Super Famicom from japan !
  • Solid information all around, guys.
