Apparently my package was lost?

I searched the forums, but the closest thing dealing with my problem had to do with shipping internationally.

Okay, on November 15 I won a large lot of NES stuff for $243.03 + $46 shipping, and I paid within two minutes of the auction ending.  The seller contacted me the next day, November 16, with the tracking information of this package through UPS.  A couple of weeks rolled by and there was no package, and I remembered the UPS being fairly quick when delivering packages, even going across the country from Michigan to Washington like this one was.  So I check on the tracking number, and the package of games is still sitting at the UPS pickup place in Michigan.  I contacted the buyer and they went to the UPS store to find out what was going on, apparently they lost my package, but they needed 7 days to find it.  7 days passed and they still couldn't find it, so they ask the seller how much it was worth and then they started filing out a claim, which was supposed to take 7 days as well.  Well it's been 9 or 10 days now since that's happened and I'm still without my games and I don't have my money.

So my questions are, should I stop messing around with the seller to get my money back or should I just contact eBay directly?  I filed a claim through eBay after 30 days had passed, but I haven't selected the option to talk to a paypal representative yet.  Would I even be covered for something like this, or do I stand to lose nearly $300 if the UPS claim doesn't come through?  They provided tracking information, but it hasn't even left their town yet.  At this point I just want my money back, the games weren't anything special in the first place.

UPS, I do not like you very much right now.

  • This is why I hate how UPS always asks whats in the box. It's quite possible that someone from UPS stole it unfortunately image
  • Yeah, I'm sure it probably was. I know that sometimes places like that can get pretty busy and hectic around this time of year, but how do you just misplace a package containing 111 Nintendo games? Must have "fell off the back of the truck".
  • I hear the Post Office has some pretty good services image

I would just file my claim on paypal and get my funds back ASAP, let the seller deal with the lost package.

I hear the Post Office sucks, and use packages to play games in the back room..

Football with my games, BS...  I know you work there, but you are biased.. The Post Office sucks, and you know it.. I mean they just raised Parcel Post rates, WTF...
  • They didn't raise Parcel Post rates...not in months. In fact in Jan they are reducing rates on Express and on Priority. Even before I worked here I thought the PO was pretty good, they do some stupid stuff, but as a whole it is a good service. They handle millions of pieces of mail, and less than 1% of that ever has any problems. USPS moves more mail in 1 day than UPS and Fedex does over the course of an ENTIRE year!

Then hy is it so bloody expensive to ship Parcel now?  Priority isn't even that much more?

  • I avoid UPS like the plague and if I know a package will be mailed with UPS I won't even buy it unless they change to USPS. I once had a package sent to me from the states with UPS and they charged me $30. for shipping from the states, than once it the package got to the boarder they decided the USA portion of the delivery was complete, then they had the Canada UPS ship the package from the border to me and charged me another $30. for shipping and they wouldn't give me my package till I payed for the shipping again. USPS is way better.

I haven't shipped Parcel Post one time this entire year. With the online shipping discount, and the fact that you get Delivery Confirmation free on Priority, every single item to every zone is either CHEAPER to send Priority, or only more expensive by about ten cents or so.

Worth every penny to get out out of the mail stream sooner, and avoid being that "less than 1%" that Jason mentioned.
  • USPS kicks UPS A**. haha. I'm not surprised by this little story at all. Sorry man.

But Dan those of us who don't ship alot of stuff don't have a scale to weigh packages on..  So I can't use online shipping, so I hate hearing the online shipping discount..  I'm not going to buy a special scale just to weigh packages..  I like going to my local PO and talking with the nice ladies.

Well, that's only true up to a certain amount of pounds to nearby zones.  Look at the difference for a 5 pound package 4 zones away from you.

  • ^ If I'm sending a 5 lb package, I'm using flat rate Priority.
  • Yeah, but flat rate doesn't help with a steering wheel and pedals headed to Seattle from Ohio....

Although I have mastered getting a bubble-wrapped N64 with two controllers, power brick, hookups, and a game to fit into a medium flat rate box.

If I had you for my secret santa then I would have got you a scale image  No idea how much you ship, but if you send even 2 or 3 packages a month, then I'd consider a scale a necessity.

It's not a back-breaking investment either, maybe $25-$30 shipped tops for a durable one off eBay.  They save you money on rates and confirmation and save you time at the post office...

I'll probably just do that tonight, I want my money back.

You know, I always use USPS for everything and I have never had a problem unless it was my fault.  My past experiences with UPS haven't been BAD exactly, but after this crap I'm going to look at the service my seller is using before bidding for sure.

Most of the time I don't even need to use my scale anymore unless it's an odd package.  I know that one NES game in a bubble mailer would be 5 oz., two NES games would be 9oz., 3 is 13 oz., 4-6 go into a flat rate envelope and anymore than that will go into a flat rate box.  I think I bought my scale on eBay for $20 about four years ago, it's still going strong and well worth the money.
  • If you use a lighter weight kraftpaper bubble mailer, with some of the simpler games with a small board (most SMB/DH, many black box games, etc) it's 4 oz, you'll save yourself 17 cents per game weighing them. It really adds up. Will pay for the scale right there.
  • I have also had rather crappy experiences with my locally owned UPS Store. When I sold my comics to Mike earlier this year, the woman grabbed the first box (weighed about 50 lbs), and just chucked it on the floor to make room for the next one. After giving her Superman laser eyes, she was nicer to the rest of them, but Mike still ended up with some damaged comics. They may not be indicative of UPS on the whole, but it sure has soured my experience with the company.

As for the scale, I keep putting off buying one. I read that article in the ezine a while back, but haven't followed through yet. Can you get the discount through the USPS website, or just when you print labels in paypal?

When the counter lady chucked your box on the floor, she was just demonstrating how your box would be treated about every step of the way.

Wow, really?  That will really add up, I'm going to need to change my bubble mailer supplier for sure.

Yes, it's cheaper when printing them out through paypal.  I may be wrong, but as far as I know you can only ship packages in the US through the actual USPS site Priority Mail, they don't give you an option for first class or at least I can't find it.  Through paypal for a five ounce package (one NES game in one of my bubble mailers) it costs $2.09, 2 games $2.77, a flat rate Priority envelope costs $4.80, medium flat rate box is $9.85 and delivery confirmation is free with all of those.  I won't even ship a package out to someone from ebay without printing the label out through paypal anymore.  When you print out a paypal shipping label it automatically notifies them that the package has been shipped, giving them a tracking number, which is awesome because I'm pretty sure that you can't put delivery confirmation on small first class packages like one game in a bubble mailer.

It works through their standalone "Click-n-Ship" as well. You cannot ship First Class, PP or Media in click-n-ship, by the way...but the online shipping discount only applies to Priority anyways so that's moot.

Linton Labels, I'm forever linking to them, but I get thanked every time. They're real winners, VERY fast with orders and the bubble mailers are the perfect balance of light and tough.

  • Cool, thanks man. I've been using someone named valuemailers (I think that's their name anyways) on ebay, but I'm almost out so I'll have to try Linton.
  • I'm super excited right now! I contacted eBay directly about my claim, and I got the whole "We will make a decision in the next 48 hours", so I thought I was going to have to wait even longer. Well it only took them about an hour to reach a decision and refund me IN FULL. BOOYAH! Guess what I'm going to do with the money? Buy a buttload of more games on craigslist.
