Hi, I am an old collector getting back into what I love

Hi everyone,

My name is Lloyd and I stopped collecting video games about 6 years ago when I got into the thick of things in college and grad school. But before then I had collected for about 5 years and worked for  4 years in a mom and pop video game store here in Las Vegas. Now that I am done with school I would like to revive what I really love and that was to find, buy and trade old video games.  I loved collecting video games especially SNES and older systems, but my one and true love is the NES.

It has been pretty hard on me the last 6 years not being able to go to the thrift stores, pawn shops, garage/estate sales and flea markets. I just loved the thrill of the hunt for those jewels and gold mines. Once in while from time to time I was able to go to some of my old stores and see what I can find, most of the time finding nothing. But, it is that passion that has kept me going and now having more free time I cant wait to start it again.

I have tons of amazing stories of finds, some happy ones and some sad ones, which I would love to share. I cant wait to chat with you all, and I hope to make some great friends.

  • Welcome Lloyd. Where do you hunt? Over the past five years I fear things may have dried up considerably, the hobby's really exploded since you've been cloistered. Welcome back to the fun though image
  • Welcome aboard
  • I have definitely seen a huge difference in the used video game market today compared to 5 years ago. Pawn shops and videogame stores  (like gamestop and gamecrazy) are worthless now.  For example, thrift stores here in Las Vegas, especially Goodwill's, are now checking everything on Ebay before they price the games. Last month I went to a Goodwill and they had zelda for $12, which I could not believe, when 5 years ago I could have bought that same game for $3 at the same store.

But the worst and probably the most devastating NES find happened to me 6 months ago at the same Goodwill. I went there randomly one day when I had free time, and they had a huge cardboard box that had Nintendo handwritten on it. It had a price of $400!!!!!!!!!!!! I was floored to see that price, especially at a thrift store. Wondering what was inside, I looked thought the clear tape and saw boxed Nintendo games. I asked if i could look inside and after a lot or persuading they allowed me to remove the tape and look inside. I pretty much s**t my pants when I saw 44 boxed Nintendo games still in there shrink wrap. The games ranged mega man 1-6, zelda and link, double dragon 1-3, kid Ikaris and many more of the very popular games for the NES. There was only one thing wrong, all of the games were slit through the top of the shrink wrap...I was floored and very angry. I asked to see the manager and find out exactly what had happened. The store manger had said that they received all of the nintendo games as a donation along with many more games from a huge collection that was dispersed throughout all of the Goodwills in Las Vegas. I then asked why were all of these games opened?????? She gave me this as an answer, "goodwill is not allowed to sell any merchandise new that has not come from a store like Target, and that we do not want to be held liable for any merchandise unopened because we do not know if the merchandise is actually inside. " So they basically opened 44 sealed nintendo games to see if they were actually inside....I was so pissed, but I still bought the box, and too today it is the most expensive purchase I have had.
  • Welcome to the site, Lloyd. Sad story about the sealed games being opened, but depending on what was in there 44 minty CIB's for less than $10 apiece still sounds like a pretty good deal to me. I would have probably picked them up too. image
