Almost as good as finding new stuff...

So a few months ago, I got a hankerin' to play some Demon Attack, so I dug out my old PCjr, hooked it up, and played a bit.  Dr. Morbis happened to be over that day, and he was amazed at the awesomeness of it - it happens to be by far the best version of the game available - so we jumped on eBay to see what it would cost him to get one.  When I saw that a core unit without the extras that I have sells for around $200ish, I damn near shit my pants.  All told, with the original titles I have (don't count the pirates, but I have a few legit games and programs) and add-on hardware that I own, I had around $800-900 worth of IBM goodness stashed away.  I considered selling, but decided against it - I actually want to expand on what I have considering how much time I plugged away on it.  I just think it's a pretty good turnaround considering I got the lot of it for free of a friend back in '94 because they were junking it and I wanted to play some King's Quest image

    x2
  • Eh, it's karma man. It'll come back on you eventually. I'm sure you only wish you had it back because it was valuable. If it was something you really wanted around, you wouldn't have given it away in the first place. I'm sure the friend that gave it to me would rather have it in the hands of someone who will treasure it than have it rot in a garbage dump for eternity. And who knows what you DO have that's worth something that you wouldn't know because it's not a big deal. You could have a $15,000 nickel in your change, or a super rare collector teacup in your china cabinet, and you'd never know because it's not something you know much about. The same joy we get when we buy a $100 game for $5 is the same joy a spoon collector gets finding a $100 spoon for $0.25 at Goodwill.
  • I'd love to have my coco2 back, as well as my telestar pong game, and old tandy pc. I was too young to care then, but I'd love to have them now. Same reason I love the NES, I grew up with it. I don't even play new games anymore(besides homebrews).
  • Yeah, but at the same time, would you USE them? I have things in my collection that, if I wasn't a collector (re: didn't know better), I would likely give away without a second thought. I would regret not charging for it or something if I found out it had value, but I wouldn't regret giving it away unless it was thrown on eBay that evening or something. I would give away Stadium Events if it went to a loving home and not to someone who wanted to turn a profit real quick (well, if I got it dirt cheap or something...no way I'm shelling out $13K and giving it away lol...but I hope the example works).
  • Yea, I'm saying I would play them. I'd love to pop some Downland into the coco2. Maybe some jumpjoe, or Arctic adventure on the tandy. Not to mention, we used to have some intense gaming competitions/tournaments on the telestar. Imagine how fun it would be now that I can have drunken pong tourneys.

I guess this is because I am the opposite of you. I'm a classic gamer first, and a collector second. I don't plan on letting my carts sit on a shelf for all time. I do regret giving things away (actually throwing a few out :'() or things being sold when I was too young to care. My parents wanted to sell my nes, gamegear, genesis on me back in the day. Thankfully by then I actually did care and held onto them.
  • Then you're not different. I am pretty heavy into collecting, but I'm a gamer first. What I'm saying is if they ended up with people that care as much as you do, it's not so bad. The trash though, that sucks image But hey, one day it'll come back on you image Bet you got something stashed away that's worth a fortune...even if it's just a small one.

If it did, I'd be able to get a CIB Stadium Events and still have some left over...

Try 8+..... This housing market kills me. Wife and kid doesn't help either. Things were much cheaper in Bachelor land. Hence why I am a gamer first, collector second. Most free cash goes towards food lol.

I just wish I was employed.  It would make dealing with the debt collectors a bit easier...at least I could give them some money once in a while.  One of them actually told me to borrow money to pay them off...I was like WTF, how the hell does that help me? image
  • ^^^No jobs in on the rigs? I thought they were always looking for peeps in AB
  • Most of the rigs have downsized, but I can't physically do the work anyway. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place...my back is buggered to the point that my doctor tells me to get a desk job, but my education says all I can do is general labour. And since my wallet says I can't afford school, my ass is as fucked as an anime chick in a hentai flick image
