Strange Game & Watch problem

I got a good deal on a Fire Attack game on the basis that its buttons "don't work properly", thinking that it could just need a contact cleaning. Anyway, its problem is far stranger. The Game A, Game B and Time buttons work flawlessly for their own functions but the 4 directional buttons do nothing at all. In fact, the time button acts as the "top-right" directional button in game. Obviously it is unplayable which is a shame because it is clean with good speakers and a clear, dark LCD. I took a look at the PCB and everything looks fine. I cleaned up the buttons and the button contacts and they still do nothing. I also have a Turtle Bridge with a similar problem but it is still playable, albeit quite clumsily. Are there any components that could be causing such problems?

  • Sounds like a short, or a cut in one of the traces. You're going to have to get a circuit tester with a pinpoint probe and see what's going where.
  • Thanks for the quick reply. I probably won't take another look until the weekend but I'll post observations then. The difficult part will be connecting the batteries while the case is disassembled, so I might have to rig them up with electrical tape.
