today i just hit the 30 mark line a small collection and mark but im trying for 35 now how many does every one else have p.s. i know my collection is small just started
FF6 was the last time Final Fantasy was worth a damn.
Anyway, there's a ton of good RPGs on the NES, depending on the style you like best. I'm partial to Wizardry-style dungeon crawlers myself, so I'd say Wizardry I and II, The Bard's Tale, Pool of Radiance, Might & Magic, etc.
(1) Might and Magic (graphically, this is one of the most impressive games on the system)
I always thought the early Wizardry games were really sub-par, even though I love the series in general. Also, I don't care for the Gold Box ports, since I played them on the PC and they are SO much better in their original format.
(B) Japanese-style:
(1) Dragon Warrior 4 - head and shoulders above every other "console"-style RPG on the system.
You get 5 distinct chapters, lots of characters to work with, great game flow...it just works.
(2) Dragon Warrior 2 - you get to build up a party as you find them and it's a huge graphical improvement over the original
(3) Final Fantasy - I loved this game, but it ranks behind the better Dragon Warrior games, since it's much more rough around the edges...it just lacks the level of polish that Enix gave to their follow-ups (though it murders the original Dragon Warrior, without question)

FF7 and the rest of the series is so disappointing comparing to the masterpiece. FF6 could qualified as the best video game ever made, and personally, I would say it is one of the most artistic video game existing.

Did either of you play FF9? It's the only really good post-SNES Final Fantasy, IMO.

You're right, I played the FF9 and beat it completely. Just forgot about it. This one was a clear return to the roots of FF4-FF6. I liked every sub quests in it, especially the one where you need to find a place on the map based on an image. The card game was sweet too.
Yeah, FF9 definitely felt like a return to the series roots.
It was a breath of fresh air after how horrible FF8 was.
God, FF8 is so a margin Final Fantasy game, could be named something else and no one would care.
The other Final Fantasy game I really enjoyed on Playstation is Final Fantasy Tactics. Awesome battle system, and the whole storyline could do a decent Tragedy play.
I think Destiny of an Emperor is currently my favorite NES RPG. I was never a huge rpg fan though.
I like Destiny of an Emperor as well. Not saying it's the best one ever... dragon warrior series and final fantasy are hard to beat.
Destiny of an Emperor is definitely the best relatively unrecognized RPG. If you've played all of the other more popular (japanese-style) rpg's, it's well worth checking out. The spell names and character names take some getting used to, though.

One of the first games I ever had for the nes was Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which got me interested in the Novel and the Three Kingdoms historical period in general, so the story and characters are one of the reasons I really got into this one.
There is also a Destiny of an Emperor II for famicom, which I am currently playing that continues the story.
Well I guess I'm not the only one who got into the Ro3K books from playing the NES games. In my case it was Romance of the Three Kingdoms II that got me hooked.
typical, but i've always felt the first Dragon Warrior was the best as well. i can't seriously argue that it's a better game overall compared to its sequels or even Final Fantasy, but it just gives me a feeling that i've never quite had with any other game since. it's so damn 'charming', i guess you'd say. the simplicity of the game just does it for me somehow. they definitely improved things as the series went on (though i still think the colors used in DW4 are nasty), but the first one will always be my favorite due to nostalgia. as for 'best', i might have to go with DW3 or maybe even Final Fantasy. never been a fan of Faxanadu or most any of the other RPGs for the system, though i'm very impressed with what i've played of Sweet Home so far. as a Famicom-only game though, i guess that doesn't really count.
Well Dragon Warrior was the very first console RPG that's gotta be worth something, and that tunes kind of catching too, which is really the only reason it's my favorite

Does Crystalis count as a RPG title?
It's more of an adventure game with RPG elements, in my opinion...though there has been plenty of debate on the topic.
I would lump it in with Faxanadu, Zelda 2, Faria, and Tower of Radia.
well.........I'm bias on Final Fantasy 6, Chronon Trigger, Tales of Phantasia and Super Mario RPG
Yet none of those are NES games
I would say Crystalis if that count !
How about Zelda?

Agree %100 here.
Not pure RPG, but certainly share RPG characteristics with all games quoted above, adding Startropics series and Battle of Olympus.

dragon warrior one and tower of radia.
Do you really think Dragon Warrior is better than Dragon Warrior 2?
I think the improvements in the sequel are pretty substantial.
Though not really an RPG, but more of an action adventure/beatup - River City Ransom on the NES
SNES has many favourites for me.
