BEST games for the DS?

I'd like to hear about the BEST games available for the DS.  I'm not into their rarity, only their quality.  I am into the Resident Evil type of game as well as adventure and unique games.  My wife is into pretty much the same, plus games like Kingdom Hearts and Pokemon.

So then, any reccommendations?

Thanks-

A.R.

  • My favorites:

Chrono Trigger: Yeah it's a re-make but it's AWESOME. 'Nuff said. Added features are lacking though.

Super Mario 64 DS: Another re-make but more awesomeness. And 150 stars instead of 120, and the ability to play as Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and Wario.

Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story: Great RPG, if you've played the previous Mario RPGS this is a step-up. (At least from the second one, about equal in quality to the first)

Mario Kart DS: Great online game, and the best Mario Kart made. Lots of fun if you enjoy racing and Mario.

Animal Crossing: Wild World: May not be for you, but it's an online simulator where you customize your house, go fishing, bug hunting, and a whole lot more. And you talk to animals. Yup.

I personally don't recommend Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, but many other people do. Just too easy and simplistic for my taste.
  • Chrono Trigger

    Izuna games

    Castlevania games

    Arkanoid

    Dragon Quest games

    Kirby games

    Tetris (Hard to find)

    Puzzle Quest

    Super Mario Bros. New

    FF4 & FF3

All I can think of atm!
  • I've put more time into puzzle games on the DS than anything else, with New York Times Crosswords being my biggest time waster. Picross DS was wicked too, until you finish every puzzle anyway. Scribblenauts started fun but wore thin quickly...kinda disappointed I didn't wait for a price drop on that one, cuz it's worth playing, but not for full price. Aside from them, the Castlevanias and Etrian Odysseys are wicked fun.
  • Etrian Odyssey. I forgot about that game. Lolis and F.O.E.s...

    Speaking of which.....

i'm mainly into RPGs and Strategy RPGs, so i'll just list some of those...

    - Dragon Quest IV & V (my favorite series ever, and these remakes are tops)
    - Final Fantasy III & IV (remakes of Famicom/SFC games)
    - Final Fantasy Tactics A2
    - Fire Emblem (remake of the first game on Famicom)
    - Chrono Trigger (port of SNES game)
    - Disgaea (port of PS2 game)
    - Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey will be out soon, that should be pretty good. i'd also say Front Mission, but i just started playing it the other day and am already breezing through it with almost no effort. cool game, but it almost seems like a chore to be honest. the Advance Wars games are cool, but i've never really played them for more than a few minutes (as of yet). i'm sure there's a number of other decent games in this vein that i either haven't played or am forgetting to mention.

  • Love how all but two of those games on your list are ports or remakes and not original DS properties...it's just a bit amusing image
  • I'd like to add:

    Professor Layton

    Advanced Wars

Oh, and that one where they scream: AGENTS! GOOOOOOOOOOO!
  • The one where they scream agents gooo is Elite Beat Agents.
  • mario kart ds-i came really late to the game with this one as far as wifi is concerned, but theres still a few good racers, mainly cheaters. great game with a ton of replay value granted you enjoy these types of games.

korg ds-10 (and ds-10 plus)-if you're a musician, you owe it to yourself to get this if you've got a ds. think a korg-flavored 808 and 2 303's thrown in with effects for good measure, with tons of added functionality in the ds-10 plus version. you can throw down some decent grime and dubby stuff too if you have external effects. even without it its fun just to mess around with. ds-10 plus came out on the 3rd, so check that out if you're going to check out either, theres a lot of added functionality if you've got a DSi.
  • There's both of the Professor Laytons, great puzzle games.

Henry Hatsworth - Unique platformer / puzzle hybrid that is QUITE difficult. Great challenge.

N+ - Classic ninja arcade action

    Ninjatown - Great strategy game

Big Bang Mini - Fast paced intense arcade action!
  • yep, totally forgot about Korg DS-10, i had sold it when i saw that DS-10+ was coming and was mainly looking through my DS games here when listing the others. really though, i'm not sure that i'd suggest it to someone who doesn't have a significant interest in music. great app though, if you're into that sort of thing.
  • ya, ds-10+ came out on the 3rd, im guessing it was because ds-10 sold so well and they ran out of copies and figured hey, dsi is out, lets put more functionality into it. you should have held onto it, i could see it worth being a little more somewhere dow the line.

main reason i suggest it is because its got a really intuitive setup, and i think that it would open the door to a lot of people to learn to write music with something a lil less restrictive. theres a lot of nuances to it that remind me of both reason and rebirth, which is pretty simple programs to get the hang of, ds-10 just makes it so you can do that on the go.
  • For old school action shooter fans:

    Contra 4

    Metal Slug 7

    Nanostray 2

  • If you like adventure games, I'd strongly recommend the Ace Attorney series (start with Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney) and Hotel Dusk Room 215
  • Rhythym Heaven

    Wario Ware

Resident Evil DS its just a remake of RE1 but its pretty fun still.
  • I can vouch for the quality of a lot of the games mentioned already, but would add The World Ends With You and Space Invaders Extreme. Very different, but both were great fun.
  • Thank you everyone, great suggestions!  I think I'll have to get Resident Evil straight away.

Are these games sturdy by the way?  They look like frail chips, no?  I wonder what the DS 'version/alternative' for THESE games would be:   ....?  (Some of my favorites, do they have DS counterparts?)

NES Pro Wrestling,  NES Journey to Silius,  NES Punch-Out,  NES Zelda  (NOT the silver Link game..ughh)  SMS Alex Kidd & Wonderboy,  Genesis Streets of Rage II,  NES Crystalis,  Genesis Altered Beast,  Genesis Golden Axe,  Sega Rastan,  NES Faxanadu,  Virtual Boy Virtual Pinball,  GB Kirby's Pinball,  TG-16 Devil/Alien Crush,  Tetris, Resident Evil,  PSX Tomb Raider II, ...Damn...there are too many!!  ha

    Thanks!

    A.R.

  • I know there's a Metroid Prime Pinball, but I haven't gotten a chance to try it out.
  • Retro Game Challenge is great. It features fake, 8-bit style games from the 80s.
  • Mario Kart DS
    Mario 64 DS
    Retro Game Challenge
    Metroid Prime Hunters
    Trauma Center
LoZ: Phantom Hourglass (I found it fun, if a bit repetetive)
    New Super Mario Bros.
    Sonic Rush

    My wife really enjoys Nintendogs...

Wish I could find a copy of Tetris for a reasonable price, it looks awesome.
  • Chrono Trigger - amazing game, especially if you never played the original.

Contra 4 - pretty much a throwback to the new games, just as fun.

    Sonic Rush

    Tetris ds

all of the mario and zelda games are great as well.
  • i just want to add advance wars days of ruin, they really reshape the series on that one
  • I've heard Tetris was spendy, but I see a lot of complete auctions on ebay ending in the mid teens. Is this considered spendy or is there something I don't know?
  • I'm suspicious of all DS games I see on eBay. I just assume they're all pirates and don't even bother. image
  • nah, i've bought a number of new/sealed DS games recently for very cheap ($15-20 each, many of which i listed above) and all are legit. you just need to know what to watch out for, and never buy from Hong Kong.
  • I must add Air Traffic Chaos. I've been playing the last few days and I'm in love. It is worth a look.
  • Meteos. Really great puzzle game. Highly addictive!!!
  • Castlevania Dawn of sorrow (the best ds castlevania)

Metroid prime pinball (best pinball ever!)

Point blank DS ( some fast paced arcade style fun!)

and can't go wrong with super mario 64 DS, a lot of changes, multiple playable characters, and the stars went from 120 to 150, was just playing today!
  • I looked through my game list and figured I'd list some of my favorites:

    -Ace Attorney series

    -Air Traffic Chaos

    -Castlevania games

    -Chrono Trigger

    -Elite Beat Agents

    -Henry Hatsworth

    -Hotel Dusk

    -Kirby games

    -Mario & Luigi

-New York Times Crossword (single-card multiplayer. I LOVE playing multi on this one with my husband)

    -Professor Layton series

-Retro Game Challenge (if you are a classic gamer you owe it to yourself to play this one)

    -Touch Detective series

    -Trace Memory

    -Trauma Center series
