I think another reason I see alot of these is becuase they are 1$ Nes games. But no one is selling them for 1$. They want 5$! So everyone passes on the same Silent Service. More people see that copy. Walking away laughing. Add that to, the games sucks, and people are walking away laughing at 2$. Any damage to the cart makes it worthless. I'm sure we could name more games this happens to. I don't own Othelo and a few others for this very reason.
The point of the statement was that, as a country, Japanese people are encouraged to be xenophobic. "Racist" is probably not the choice term, and while the generalization obviously doesn't apply to ever person...it is true for culture in general.
He "knows" because he's a social psychologist that had some significant body of work that involved studying groups like the Japanese.
They're a country that has a strict 3% immigration rate. Effectively, that means the average Japanese person has VERY little exposure to anyone who is not Japanese. That inherently breeds a culture of disliking those who are different (as stated by the Japanese guy in our class).
Hopefully, newer generations of Japan will change the norm, because they need it. Otherwise they'll collapse economically, since they're dying faster than they're breeding.
I dont know very much about the japanese culture, but who encourage them to be xenophobic and why are they encouraged to be xenophobic?
Ye, i guess it depends on why they dont like white people. If they dont like white people because they are white, then i would describe that as being racists. But if they dont like white because of some other reasons, then "racist" is probably not the choicen term indeed as you say.
I dont disagree with that probably many japanese people dont like white people, and it might be a part of the japanese culture in general for many japanese people indeed, but i just wanted to say that i think that it is a bold statment to say "pretty much everyone", especially when there are millions of people living in Japan. If i was japanese, then i dont think that i would like if people thought that i was xenophobic (unless i was xenophobic hehe) because it has been said that pretty much everyone japanese persons are xenophobic.
I didnt mean to say that "pretty much everyone" is 100% of the japanese people, i didnt mean to say that, but i read it as maybe like 95% of the japanese people, and that number seemed quite high to me. That is why i wondered how your professor could know this But maybe i read "pretty much everyone" quite litterally while maybe your professor maybe ment that it isnt uncommon in the japanese culture to be xenophobic when he said "pretty much everyone"?
A 3% immigration rate sounds low indeed. Out of curiousity, how does this immigration rate compare to for example the immigration rate in USA?
Ye, i would guess that the newer japanese generations are (or will be) less xenophobic. Maybe newer japanese generations goes more away from some of the older japanese traditions? But being xenophobic or racists is something that no one really should be, so hopefully we will see less of this in the future, not only in japan, but worldwide as well
Naw, just make it have nothing to do with that turd of a game Make it something like where you pick a race and slaughter everyone else Call it "Xenophobic Genocide"

It's not just "white people" that they're xenophobic towards. The guy from Japan literally said "We hate other people because they're not Japanese". Historically, they hate other Asians just as much, if not more.
It looks like my number was overly generous, unless these stats are way out of whack. This says that the USA is made up of nearly 13% immigrants (sounds similar to other numbers I've heard), but Japan is actually less than 2% immigrants.
I think the 3% number is what their current constitution caps the number of immigrants to be at any given time, so it's not necessarily maxed out all the time.
Take it all with a grain of salt, because that list claims that France is only 10% immigrants, and through the news we've all been led to believe that they're being overrun by North Africans. (I seem to recall numbers as high as 35-40%)

Ah, for some reason i thought that "xeno" ment white. That is why i said "white people". But i see now that xeno means "foreign", so that applies to everything that is foreign and not just "white people" indeed. Sorry about that mistake.
I wonder why many japanese people hate foreign stuff. Maybe they think by not accepting much of the foreign stuff, that this will keep their own traditions etc. more alive? But i dont know.
Thanks for the link the immigration stats! Japan is pretty far down on that list indeed with only 1.599%.
As much as 35-40% of all people that live in France are immigrants from North Africa? That number sounds almost too high to me, but i am under the impression that France has many immigrants from Africa though, so who knows if this number actually can be true
The irony is that Japanese people don't seem to hate foreign STUFF, they just dislike foreign PEOPLE.
The France thing...yeah, I have no idea what the actual number is if it's not the 10% from the link.
The 30-40% thing must have been something I heard on the radio or read on the news, and is likely just shoddy journalism combined with a fuzzy memory of it. But to hear the French talk about it, they act like they're literally being overrun by African Muslim immigrants.
Japanese have a strong vision of national and cultural authenticity. They don't literally hate foreign people, they simply don't accept foreigners or immigrants as part of their culture. If you go stay in Japan for 10 years, it won't mean that you're a Japanese citizen for them, and you'll probably have a hard time getting married with a Japanese.
They're also very strict about their own reconnaissance as authentic Japanese. If a Japanese quit the country and install himself in another country for only a few years, he's no longer consider as a Japanese when he get back to Japan.

For a country with a mean IQ score slightly above the world's, that's a pretty dumb attitude.

Unless they're referring to a percentage of total immigrants...making 3-4% of their total population...still a fair bit though.

Ah yes, my mistake, sorry. I actually checked Wikipedia before i wrote my previous post, and it says that Xeno is indeed a greek word for "alien" (or "stranger" as Wikipedia says), so i dont know why i wrote foreign instead of "alien" I think the first place where i heard the word "xeno" was actually from the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" hehe, so "xeno" is a greek word indeed
Ye, there are much foreign stuff in Japan indeed. I see that for example many western developed games get released in Japan. Some of these western games doesnt sell that well in Japan though, but at least many western games gets released in Japan.
As the_wizard_666 said, maybe the 35-40% of north african immigrants is the total percentage of all immigrants (the other percentage of immigrants are not from North Africa)? That seems more likely to me at least
Yeah, that's what I figured. Still, when 10% of your country's population is not native to your country, that's quite a few foreigners. Speaking of which, "aliens" as extra-terrestrial beings is a relatively modern line of thinking. The term "alien" would be used to describe things that are foreign to you. This is why so many Mexicans are considered "illegal aliens" in the US. It's not that they're aliens, they're just foreign nationals. "Alien," "strange," and "foreign" are all synonymous with each other, thus all are correct translations of "xeno." This is what makes translating ancient texts difficult, and why different translators have different translations of the same work. Modern languages are simply more diverse (in terms of quantity of terms, and specificness therein) than ancient ones.

Silent Service is a game? I thought we were discussing getting handjobs from a mute chick...
Man, no wonder I couldn't figure that shit out. I knew I should have read the manual!

xenophobic, would make a nice title for a homebrew game, I'll start working on it
Would it be the sequel to Xenophobe? Hehe.
