Fee for fixing a NES?

Hey all.  So I saw an ad on craigslist that someone needs help getting their NES to work.  I've had to do this a few times myself, and my guess is that the system is really dirty.  This person seems to not want to be bothered with doing it himself, and I wouldn't mind helping him out.  What would be a good amount to charge for my trouble?

  • Depends if you are going to need a new 72 or not. Some have the patience which I do not to referb the 72s. Steve Charges a flat 20 to do a pin swap including the part. While hes in there he cleans the system real well. Some may charge more some less... But Hope that helps
  • 20 is a good price and you might be able to do a trade with the guy ?

most of the time its a guy thats really into gaming , but has no idea

how to fix a small problem ,

  • I like the trade option, he might have a couple games that would be worth snagging in exchange. Personally I don't think $20 is unfair, but I would be uncomfortable asking for more than $10 if all it is is a simple cleaning (which 99% of the time that's all it needs)...well, unless you had to spend more than that on materials to do the job, but I highly doubt that image

EDIT: If you do go $20, and you're comfortable doing the job, you might as well disable the lockout for him as well.  Takes 5 seconds and it ensures full compatability with unlicensed games image

  • Chances are if he doesnt feel like messing with it, he doesnt know NES well.

Maybe he has a rare cart you could get as payment for your services.
  • I occasionally work for a local store, I fix (refurb the old pins) his NES systems for $10 each.
  • Awesome. Thanks for all of the great suggestions guys!
  • I'm glad you brought this up Alex because I have a question concerning this matter as well. If you are charging for this service, would it be improper to disable the lockout as well? I do this with all my toasters just to ensure there will be no complaints, but that's only because I own them before resale. At no point during this repair service do you own the console, so I'm wondering if it's alright to snip-the-chip just to ensure that everything works, or if it's best left alone so not to upset the owner when telling him/her that you mutilated even the tiniest little piece of hardware, or to go further, do you do it and not tell them at all?

    and maybe even current... lol
  • most of the time these kinds of people are time wasters ... odds are extremely good they will need all of their games popped and cleaned as well ... i prob would not do it for anything less than $0.75 a game and $10 for the system but that's if i have free time .... you could always charge the magical buck fitty per cart

We at the PnT in Tacoma charge $20 for a 72 pin swap...$25 if they want it down "while they wait".
Just because I am that good...
