Best of the best Atari 2600 games, please recommend!

Hello!

Recently y acquired an Atari 2600 (woodgrain is sleek image ). I'm asking you to recommend Atari games. I don't intend to collect rare or obscure stuff here, just the fun common games (already got Combat, so much fun!).

Also, can you recommend the Atari remote controllers? I guess they work with radio signals instead of infrared, as NES wireless controllers do. So I'm guessing they perform better.

Also, is there anything like a "Powerpak for Atari"?

  • If you have paddle controllers, Warlords is a must.
  • Missle Command is great and takes a lot of skill at high levels, also it's super common.

Imagic titles like Atlantis and Cosmic Ark are ones I remember loving as well.

Later in my collection I picked up Turmoil, it's harder to find but a GREAT twitch-fest.

Also you can't go wrong with most Activision titles, they're almost universally high quality.
  • Also for controllers, if you want you can use Genesis controllers (wireless or wired) for a bit more "familiar" control if you're a D-pad sorta guy.
  • My two favorite Atari 2600 games will always be Yars' Revenge and Kaboom!.

Both fantastic, fun and amazingly addictive.
  • river raid!
  • I second Atlantis and Kaboom! and also fully recommend Adventure and Plaque Attack
  • warlords = best atari 2600 game ever made

miner 2049er is fun, also Kaboom! Most Activision games kick ass.
  • Stampede is by far my favorite. You will be hitting restart over and over...

    Pressure Cooker

Plaque Attack (Can't believe this already got a vote, nice work kagemusha!)

    FrostBite

Oink (One of the best 2-player games for the system)

    Missile Command

Warlords and Super Breakout are the best games to have if you own a paddle.

And to answer your question about joysticks, pick up a pair of Wico Command Control sticks. Best joysticks on the market imo.
  • to answer your question about the "powerpak"

there was one made called the Harmony Cartridge

    http://harmony.atariage.com/order.html

Fred Quimby (batari) designed this ( I believe). I saw it at the Portland RetroGamingExpo last year - it was very cool, but I did not buy one.
  • I was fond of Pitfall and Frogger, though Atari was a little before my time, so haven't played many titles.
  • Also, if you want some dramatic improvements in video quality, check out the kits at www.longhornengineer.com
  • Berzerk

    Donkey Kong, Mario Bros

    Jr. Pac Man

    Pitfall And Pitfall 2

    Jungle Hunt
  • Definitely Pitfall.
  • I personally love me some Demon Attack, although the PCjr version is by far the best one out there.
  • I love my 2600, and there are tons of great games on it, essentially everything that people have mentioned so far. Jungle Hunt and Kaboom are amongst my favs as well. Gotta have love for Frogger too. My favorite 2600 game ever tho is Tapper. Granted its like a $20 game on ebay, but its one of the best 2600 games in terms of graphics, sound, and gameplay. Luckily I got mine in a bundle pack of 20 games for $5. I have doubles and triples of many of the more popular 2600 titles. Hit me up and I can sell you some cheap. Enjoy the system dude, its awesome.
  • King Kong is awesome. image
  • Every single one of the games listed is great...I would choose Pitfall 2, Kaboom, and then Pole Position
  • I know everyone always trashes it, but I actually really enjoy E.T.
  • Most of these are repeats, but my personal faves:

    Jungle Hunt

    Pitfall

    Warlords

    Barnstorming

    Kaboom

    Breakout

    Super Breakout

    Stampede

  • I always enjoyed Raiders of the Lost Ark. Warlords is great with 4 players as well.
  • Pressure cooker

    Dolphin

    Pac Man

    Missle Command

    Yar's revenge

    Super breakout

    Warlords

  • Some of my favorites:

    Squeezebox

    Fire Fighter

    Pac Man

    Frogger

    Missle Command

    Warlords

  • Along with Pitfall, I'll also recommend Warlords. I just played it and got my ass handed to me by a computer player. Damn you Blue... (Yeah I'm new to this game and I suck at it)
  • Shark Attack!!! And 'Tron Deadly Discs' are rule. What's been said rocks though. I love Missile Command and Atlantis.
  • Berzerk
    Vanguard
    Plaque Attack

When I read this, I had a geek-gasm. Pass me a cigarrette please.

Thank you all for your suggestions; I had in mind many of the games mentioned. I'm intrigued that no one mentioned games like Moon Patroll or Asteroids. Snoopy vs the Red Baron is also a great game.

Anyways, with the find of an atari powerpak, I will take my time to get nice copies (CIB if possible). This kind of thing takes off the pressure of collecting.

    Great input guys, thanks

I picked one of these up at the expo (#4!) and it works like a champ. I'd highly recommend it.

    Some of my favorite games:

    Pitfall II
    Raiders of the Lost Ark
    Kaboom!
    Megamania
    Demon Attack
    Warlords (GREAT 4-player game!)
    Phoenix
    Adventure
    Stampede
    River Raid
    Cosmic Ark
    Keystone Capers
    Dragster
E.T. (I'm the other guy that liked this game)

Basically anything by Imagic or Activision is a near-sure bet.

I agree as well. I've always though ET was fun. You just need to get used to the controls and such.

My girlfriend who grew up playing Genesis (never played NES, let alone Atari before meeting me) sat down and played it with me giving her tips and she thought it was awesome.
