What is this stuff on this Zelda board?

I recently acquired a copy of Legend of Zelda and when I opened it to clean it, saw this strange stuff on the board, right in back of the battery.  Now I've seen several games with extra polish or Weiman's floating around, this is not too uncommon for me, but where this is right behind the battery and a little bit different color, I also thought it might be battery leakage.

Now, I don't want to touch it or try to clean it, especially with alcohol, or play it for that matter, if it is from the battery, as I don't know what will happen.  I tried to take a picture, and you can see it somewhat in the upper right hand corner.  Any ideas?

  • that pic is really really blurry, hard to tell. Could be corrosion, Ive seen it before. Without a better pic tho its hard to tell.
  • Can you give us any indication as to what it tastes like?

  • weird, it's probably battery acid, but it's hard to tell. Can you get a better picture? If you can't focus, use the macro setting. image
  • You open up the game to clean it??? Why? Isn't that a bit of overkill? Do tell.
  • OMG ITS A PURPLE GANON! image

I always open mine to clean them. Using a pencil eraser on the contacts is far more effective than just swabbing with alcohol.

I concur...it is the best way to refurb the contacts...
  • ^ I don't, weimers + Windex + alcohol, eraser leaves....the eraser residue
  • As far as the weird stuff in the carts, i've seen all colors and flavors, I am really not suprised anymore what i find in carts. Except for the occasional cart that looks brand new. Those are cool. The boards will almost seem to have a clear coat of sorts. I found a basically new Zelda Cart in a beat to hell CIB once.
