garage sales in 2010

EDIT: Another garage sale find at the bottom.

This is actually the first decent garage sale day we've had, there were quite a few on craigs list so the hubby and I got started early and headed out.  There was only one sale that mentioned NES games so we headed over that way.  We stopped at a couple along the way and of course there was nothing.  We got to the sale that said they had games and I went one way and my husband the other.  I looked over towards where he had gone and saw him standing at a table over a box so I headed over there and he was standing over a box of games.  By the time I got to him there was some guy hanging around him.  I guess there were some other games and systems too, but I always head to the NES stuff.

I called Otto and read most of the games, which I am pretty sure he has all of, then I checked on the price and they said 40.00.  Otto said it was too much and we hung up the phone.  While my husband hung over the box and the guy hung around my husband I went and asked if they would go down on the price and they said they would go down to 35.00, so we took it.  I think we did good and even if he can't really use any of the stuff it will be great for resale or trade.  My husband would not leave the box because he was sure if he let go of it that guy would have grabbed it right out from under him...he was hoping we would leave it, I'm sure.

Let me know how I did...this is what I got...a NES system, 4 controllers, a gray zapper, a 4 score, a game genie/book, a gamepro hot tips book and the following games:

Bases Loaded II / instructions
Double Dragon / instructions
Legend of Zelda II / instructions
Major League Baseball
Pro Wrestling
R.B.I. Baseball
Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt
Super Mario 3 / instructions
Tecmo Bowl / instructions
Tecmo Super Bowl / Instructions and other inserts
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles / instructions
Top Gun
WCW Wrestling
Wheel of Fortune / instructions

plus all the games had black sleeves.

I also got the following instructions:
Kings of the Beach
R.B.I. Baseball II
Skate or Die 2
Tetris
World Cup
and Donkey Kong Country SNES

There was also a plastic tub that holds 10 games and inside the system...you know you always have to check inside the system and hope for something good to be in there, right!!!  Inside this one was a Gold Zelda cart... I think I did very well there.

We stopped at a few other sales too, then at a small flea market where I found American Gladiators for 1.00.

All in all I think it was a great day.   I found a book for myself and a few books for my granddaughter and my husband found a few items too.  Plus it was a beautiful day just to be outside.

  • Very nice indeed.....it's even sweeter cause most of them came with the manuals!

Every garage sale I have hit this year has come up dry image
  • I like my mom a whole lot, but your a definite contender for best mom ever!
  • good to hear someone is finding stuff at garage sales
  • Awesome find!
  • Sweet! great find!
  • you can easily make that back with the system and the marios in a lot on ebay. Then the rest that you don't need in another lot will be profit.

My GF and myself went to over 20 garage sales in the past couple weeks, and I've found a few PS2 games and 2 dreamcast games. That's it. Really sucks around here lately. I found an NES and 3 cheap CIB's in great condition a few years ago... literally the last I've seen of NES at garage sales. It's actually really frustrating. I talked to a reseller buddy who's not in my area, and he said there are 2 shops around here that buy everything on craigslist, and a third that literally has "garage sale teams" to clean up house before people like me get there at noon. Reeaaallly frustrating. If I found that lot, I'd piss my pants. So, good find.
  • EDIT: posted something in the wrong thread, sorry image  uuuuh awesome score!
  • Got a huge lot the other day at a yard sale. About 200 games (CIB Mario 2, Tengen Tetris), 2 nintendos, power glove, mat controller, Sony PSP, and a couple games for $250! Looking to sell most of it as it is taking up way too much room.

You need to put this in its own thread rather than posting here. Not the right place for this.

Good job on the games....does it seem like there are less sales this year?? We haven't had near what we typically have. It looks like people are keeping what they have rather than selling. I thought it would be opposite because of people needing money, but it seems as they are making do with what they have.

Even though I am rapidly selling most these games. When I do make a list I will make a thread. Probably won't be anytime soon as I have been packing up games and sending them to people that will enjoy them.

  • Got the following at one sale today for 10.00:
    Game Boy Color (purple),
Game Boy (green) and the following game boy games:
    Blades of Steel
    Castlevania Adventure
    Donkey Kong
    Heavyweight Championship Boxing
    Home Alone
    James Bond 007
Mario Land (lable is almost completely gone)
    NHL Blades of Steel
    Pokemon
    Street Fighter
    WWF War Zone
and one lone DS game:  Crash Boom Bang

Then the last sale we stopped at on the way home I got the following for another 10.00
    1 Orange zapper
    Adventures of Bayou Billy
    Barker Bills Trick Shooting
    Bases Loaded II/instructions
    Big Birds Hide & Speak
    Blades of Steel
    Caesars Palace/instructions
    Dr Mario
    Hogans Alley
    Infiltrator
    Othello
    Sesame Street 1 2 3
    Snakes Revenge
    Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt

Considering how hard it is getting to find games in the wild, I don't think it was too
bad of a day.  Hopefully the rest of garage sale season will be as good if not better.

  • I wish I lived in that magical land of awesome garage sales. All we've got down here are people with old Xbox sports games and ceramic ducks.

At least, that's all I find. One can only tolerate so many ceramic ducks.
  • garage sales around here in northwest Washington have been off the hook! good luck to all of you!!!

"latest find...15lb box of legos for 2 bucks!"
  • Sweet finds for $20! Only thing note worthy this year at a yard sale has been a SNES Advantage for $1, pretty dry around here so far.
  • this weekend stunk...it was rainy, windy and cold. Went to a flea market Saturday but it was so wet most everyone had their tables covered and everyone I asked said they didn't have any games except one old lady who said she had games in a box, but her boxes were in her van and she wasn't unpacking much because of the weather. I asked her what kind of games she had and she didn't have any idea. She probably had videos not video games, but wouldn't even look for them to see what she did have...then today we went to a small flea market and the wind was so bad and it was so cold that there was only one vendor set up...needless to say, he didn't have any games. Hopefully next weekend will be better.
  • Garage sales around here suck. I stopped at one on Saturday that said "ULTIMATE GARAGE SALE", and I think they maybe had 5 tables of crappy stuff. They're mostly just a waste of my time, thrift stores are better, so I don't even bother anymore.
  • This was a very stressful weekend for me. I took Friday off and my husband drove me to a local neighborhood sale...it wasn't the greatest but there were a few sales. I asked at each house I stopped at if they had any video games. At one house the girl said she had just bought a nintendo so was trying to find some herself. I started telling her about the game place Otto frequents but couldn't remember the name of it, when all of a sudden some guy behind me tells her the name of the place. He started asking her about the system she had and I knew I better get going to the next sale. Well I no sooner got there and he was ahead
of me and asking it they had any video games...the kid there said he had some in the basement and the kids mother started asking this guy if he was looking for anything special and she started naming off almost every system out there. I stayed to see what the kid brought up and it was a gameboy and some games for it.
The kid started showing the guy what was there and he said he didn't care what was there, just how much did he want for it.
Well, I left then, and had no luck the rest of the day. I know there are collectors out there, but it really bugged me that he was there and a step ahead of me each time. My husband said not to worry about it, but it still bugged me. Well, on Saturday we went to a totally different neighborhood quite a few miles away in a totally different city and wouldn't you know it, he was there again. I talked to him once and he said he had just gotten there and hadn't found anything yet, but everytime I turned around he was a house ahead of me. Again, my husband said not to worry that he wasn't finding anything either, but it still bugged me. I ran into him again and asked him how he was doing and he said he had picked up a box of about 40 games and some different systems and other games. Well this really blew my mind...I wasn't finding anything and he had found all of this stuff...but my husband said he was probably just as pissed as me having someone there looking for the same stuff, that he was telling me stories just to get me upset, and that he figured the guy really had found nothing, just like me. I mean I did see a few xbox games and some play station stuff, but no nes stuff, and maybe he picked that stuff up...but knowing there are other collectors out there, and running into them when you are looking for stuff is a really disturbing thing. It really blew my mind...I know it shouldn't have bothered me, but it did.
Needless to say, I found nothing in either neighborhood sale, but I did go to the local flea market on Sunday and picked up the following games for a buck each: Starforce, Soccer and Gauntlet (unlicensed), so it wasn't a total wasted weekend like last weekend was, and the weather was much better than last weekend too.
Anyways...I hope for better finds during the summer and hopefully will not run into that guy again this summer.
  • Honestly, if he's really a collector and not the guy running that shop that Otto frequents (and even if he is), it might be in your best interest to befriend the guy. Who knows, if you scoop some dupes at one place and he happens to scoop some cheap dupes elsewhere, you might be able to hook each other up. Frankly, I enjoy finding other collectors in town.

I like that there are other collectors around too, but you could tell that this guy just wanted to buy up whatever was there for no matter what the price, I could tell that by how impatient he was when the kid at the one sale was showing him the games with the gameboy and he was just saying he didn't care what was there and only wanted a price.   He even told me that he didn't care what he bought and never even looked at any of the stuff until he got home, and that he had every system ever made.  It just made it stressful, because he was a house ahead of me everytime I looked up and I knew that if they even had one game it would be gone before I got there...very greedy on my part I guess, but what can I say.

  • If I was trying to show a guy an item and he said he didn't care, just give him a price and he'd pay it, I wouldn't sell him a damn thing. I like my shit to go to a good home, not to some wanker that just hoards shit for the sake of hoarding it. I'm betting the guy is just sitting on it all hoping for a huge payoff 20 years down the road, not realizing that 99% of video games actually depreciate in value. Very few hold it, and even fewer get more valuable as time passes. I would suggest asking after that dude has been through, because some people might think the same way I do and not sell to him. Probably a minority, but there's definitely going to be a few. You could also try going to another town...sometimes people go and hunt in the bigger areas, leaving treasure troves in smaller communities untouched.
  • Sucks to have another bum weekend. It's one thing to find another collector, but this guy just sounds like a horder. I am more than happy to find other collectors and help them find the games they need/want in hopes they will do the same in return. But it doesn't sound like this guy would help you get up if you triped and fell.
  • This weekend was a slow one since we only stopped at a few sales on Saturday (we had things we needed to do during the day so garage sales were not on the top of the list this weekend), and found nothing at any of them. On Sunday we took a ride to pick up some lumber and passed a bunch of garage sale signs (which was very odd for a Sunday). We were on a bit of a time limit so we only stopped at a couple sales and at the last one I actually found a game. Just sitting on a tarp with a bunch of toys and books was a CIB Mission Impossible for 2.00, it even had the odds and ends of papers that came in a bunch of the games so it's really complete and in great condition. I asked if they had anymore games around since it is kinda strange to find one lone game like that. Well the woman tells me she used to work at a department store years ago in the video game section so she was always buying her kids games and they took really good care of them...she said she was sure she had lots more in the attic but wasn't sure when she would get to them. I left her my phone number and name and let her know I was very interested in them when she comes across them...I sure hope she does and gives me a call.
  • Woo, hope she calls!
  • Hopefully she will call back, might be some real gems hidding in here attic, and from the price of Mission Impossible, she may not ask much either.
  • Went to a couple neighborhood sales today...and asked at each house if they had any video games and of course they all said no.  I did stop at one sale that advertised games and he had some dreamcast and wii and a few xbox games but nothing that interested me.  I ended up buying a gameboy camera, a roll of printer paper and a Final Fantasy DVD for $1.00 each and he threw in a pokemon pinball that he said needed a battery.  Then at one sale I asked if they had any games and was told no, but noticed something even better...a bedspread, towel and washcloth and a pair of mario curtains...no price on them so I asked how much they were.  The woman said she didn't really know what to ask so for me to make an offer...the stuff is used but not in bad shape at all, and I had no idea how much to offer...so I said $5.00, she thought for a minute and said that would be good... I was excited, since this is one of my first finds like this...EVER!!!!!!!! yay for me:-)
