Wireless or Extension Cable?

So I'm getting a TV stand made that will house all my consoles. It will be 39" high which is a bit tall for a TV stand, but what can I do if hooking up less consoles is not an option? image

So I'm faced with a few options:
1) Move the couch extremely close...
2) Track down wireless controllers which may not be OEM (I prefer OEM, but I can compromise).
3) Buy extension cables for all of my original controllers. Benefit to doing this is that I'm not limited in my selection of controllers.

I'm leaning towards extension cables, but I want to see what everyone who cares to comment thinks.

  • I'd go with the extension cable route because it's sure to work every time. I've seen mods for making your NES controllers wireless, and it seems unreliable. With extension cables, you know your signal is going to get to the console without worrying if your mod is working. But that's just me image I'd say that the wireless route is safe if you go OEM with the wavebird or something, but for systems that didn't originally support wireless controllers, I'd go extension cables.
  • Personally I'm not a fan of any wireless controllers available (including the messiah ones). I'd go with extensions, but if you decide otherwise, I have a pair of Acclaim Double players I'd sell fairly cheap.
  • I'd go with extension cords too.. too much risk in wireless controllers not being responsive enough..
  • 4 - Move your console to the floor when you are playing, and pick up after yourself when you are done. All at no extra cost to you!

This will cost in extensions of the AV and power cords. With consoles on the bottom shelves and the TV input way up top, there's no way they'll be long enough with standard cords.

    Edit
All the consoles are going to be hooked up, so I won't have to drag anything out and plug it in. I simply turn the TV on, press a button on the big switch, and play.
  • Similar problem for me. I currently drag the console out and clear up afterwards, but I've been eyeing up the NES Satellite systems. The use an infra-red base unit that you then plug wired controllers into. Better than trying to point the top of your controller at a little receiver box!

    Any recommend/warn against these?

  • Depending on what kind of game you're playing the wireless Messiah controllers were decent.

I never tried their wireless Advantage (if it even got released before they went defunct), but it was supposed to be the coolest thing ever.
  • extension cables with a homemade retractable cord machine(don't know if anyone has done that but wouldn't it be awesome lol.
  • OEM wireless controllers are usually awesome, like Wavebirds or PS3 controllers etc. Most 3rd party stuff is meh tho. Although the licensed Logitech stuff for PS1, PS2, and original XBOX were awesome.
  • Personally, I purchased a multi-tap that I use as an extension cable.. It provides an extra 2-3 feet if thats all you need.
  • depending on the system wireless controllers r great for gamecube
  • Ethan, sounds like you're gonna have a great setup for your place when done.  I've always dreamed of setting up the same kind of system.....but space limitations have kept me from doing so I guess.

That being said.....for NES, maybe the Satellite might be your answer---BUT, that won't solve all of your problems though for systems like 3DO, and other odd systems. I'm pretty sure a mix of both are going to have to be used in your case bro....

Word. I have a Logitech wireless PS2 controller right now that I use. They were on sale at Best Buy for $14.99, my buddy picked up two for himself. I prefer it over the PS2 controller.

I'd love to see pictures of that.
  • The problem with Four Score, is that you can't use the Zapper.

    I totally thought of this...though I haven't researched it.

I'll be able to find extension cables for all the 'popular' consoles without any problems. The 3DO extensions supposedly do exist. The connection looks the same as the Atari, so that may work.

Once I get my game room done I'll have to invite the Houston-ish area people over image. Might be another month or two. My TV stand should be done in about a month. I still need to get some more shelves.

Hey Ethan, LMK if you need any help.......  I'll give you a hand image
  • It's all good. I have harvested child labor for my TV stand, and shelves are just a matter of when I get around to buying them. I might wait until I get back from my trip...going to Puerto Rico, and my hotel has a casino image.

But you're already close to the TV anyways, so why be at the sofa? :-p

Unless wireless is OEM (i.e. PS3), then go for extension cables. But don't steal all my ideas!
  • Extension cables. I hate wireless controllers because I always forget to recharge the batteries or replace them. image
