Have you become more collector than gamer?

I don't play my NES games or New games all that much because I'm always looking for for the next great find and trying to complete my list....wondering how you guys balance collecting and playing?

  • I still play, but to keep things interesting I play with different controllers. For example, try playing Zelda I or II w/ the Power Glove. Or, try to beat Ninja Gaiden with the UForce. For the N64, try to play any game with the glove ...
  • I dont really play anything current except the occasional title. The way I figure it, is as a kid, growing up with NES, Genny, Snes etc I missed out on alot of great games cause what kid has the $ to go blow on them. Now that I can afford them, I am going back and buying just about anything that looks interesting that I didnt get to play before.
  • I still play alot of games bu tno whwere near as much as i use too

If you feel like playing video games, just play them. If you feel like searching, go search for games. I play my games ALOT more then I search for them. I actually never search for games really. I am a CIB person. Nothing is loose in my collection, and it is sooo much harder to find cib stuff in the wild then loose stuff. I only look for stuff when there is a game I want to play really. Or when something drops in my lap, like someone posts something I want  on here or someone replys to my adds on craigslist.
  • I play new games all the time but rarely play my classics. That said, I keep my collection for the days I want to walk into my game room and just grab something random off the shelf.
  • I've always been more of a collecter...I don't have much time to play games.
  • It's definitely difficult to balance sometimes. Collecting becomes so time-consuming because you're always looking for stuff and you might miss out, ya know?
  • I def know what you mean. The collecting aspect does become addictive/obsessive sometimes where I'd end up spending way more time searching for deals than actually playing. Honestly, switching to CIB collecting did help curb this considerably. Harder to find, less ebay auctions to sift through, in general less opportunity = more free time for game playing. Also, it did concern me recently that I had all these games and wasn't playing them, so I found ways to "make a commitment" to play more NES. For instance, I decided I would participate regularly in nesruler's contest and I joined the "20 hardest games" panel here on NA. I also found that collecting for famicom increased my desire to play because of its novelty. Now when I clean and test my new purchases I find that a 10 second test to make sure the game works often turns into at least a half hour of play... per game. image

Another thing is, I used to try to collect for way too many systems at once and this made me feel stressed actually, like there wasn't enough time. I forced myself to focus down my attention to a few systems that I really love and set more manageable boundaries. No I try to focus on NES CIB (all games), famicom CIB (jap exclusives only), a pruned down list of just 50-100 of "the best" genesis and snes games (also CIB), and the occasional new Wii title. Still might sound like a lot, but I've also prioritized my collection goals so that I'm not spread too thin.

Anyhoo, I do know the feeling but I've found that goal-setting and prioritization has helped a lot, and I'm much happier now that I play more... after all, the joys of gaming are what drew me into collecting in the first place! image
  • I collect way more than I play. I learn a lot about retro gaming history/culture from collecting, and I find that to be more interesting than sitting down and playing some of the games that I own. Don't get me wrong though, staying up until dawn playing Dream Master rules so hard. Cool idea for a thread! I've always wondered how other people use their collections.
  • I collect a lot more than I play, don't get me wrong I love playing very much. I only play old consoles no modern stuff at all.

I initially started getting games from when I was a kid just to play for nostalgia purposes. But the purchasing has definitely taken over the playing & it is an obsession for sure. I can't imagine stopping collecting, I search nearly everyday for stuff even though i can't really afford it.
  • I used to collect way more than I play. I recently hooked my SNES up to my bedroom TV, my N64 up to my living room TV, and my NES to my family room TV so now I've been playing a lot more.
  • I literally only fire up my NES or SNES like once a week. Sometimes once every two weeks. However I'm on the computer like a freaking zombie 9 hours a day looking at video-game related paraphenalia. I honestly want to cut back...
  • And now you realize the irony of video game collecting. When you are a kid, you can only afford a new game every so often an $50 is a several weeks of allowance or a special occasion like a birthday. Yet you have all the time in the world to play them and thoroughly obliterate them for your money's worth. When you are an adult, you can afford to buy as many games as you want, but most of us have hardly any time to play them between work, girlfriends, housework, etc. For those of you with kids, probably even less free time.

Life's a bitch ain't it? I haven't played any games in about a month but it's okay because I enjoy being outside in nice weather. I have been itching to play something lately though, I might try to beat a SNES game in the near future.
  • I'm with most people responding so far, I just don't have as much time as I would like to actually play my games. I spend way more time collecting. The good thing is that my collection doesn't expire, so I know I can get to playing my games eventually!

Obviously I cut up your post, but this sums it up well. I almost think that now with my large variety of stuff to play, im a little overstimulated as well. Combine that with the fact im so damn tired after work and all, I would rather sit and do nothing. Plus nothing beats the feeling of finding something new! I keep telling myself that one day I will sit and do nothing but play one day, knowing that will probably not happen. But as long as collecting (versus playing) still brings me joy and alleviates every day stress, then it is still serving a purpose.
  • 50/50 for me. I do a lot of both.
  • All great points!

I am currently in the process of working through this exact dilemma.  I have a few ideas on how I plan to combat the problem (if you want to call it that), but it's taking a lot more thinking and effort than what should be such a simple solution.
  • I definitely play a lot more than collect. In fact, I pretty much stopped collecting two years ago after I got the two SNES competition carts (which were my main targets once I started making some money). Now that I have those, most of my game purchases have been for the Xbox 360 or DS for playing. All my SNES gaming generally revolves around making articles for my website, and for that if I don't have the actual cart, I am content with my flash cart or emulation.
  • 90% collecting and 10% playing with two kids ages 2 1/2, and 1. I almost have no time for playing games anymore.
  • much more of a collector then I do playing, I don't always have time to play. I collect a lot of diff systems, but what I do is for the majority of them I collect only the games I really like, or if I find a good score I'll pick it up. I'm still debating a bit as to what exactly I want to focus on to collect, I have it down to either GB/GBC (both at once) or SNES. I lean towards the GB/GBC cuz as a kid I never really had a lot of access to play on consoles on TV so I got my time in on the GB.

Anyways, playing works out well for most as they are games I really like, but when I start focusing on the one system then I'll probably get a huge backlog.

I have to admit though, it is addicting looking for that next game, it's more exciting bringing something home and putting it on the shelf to display
  • I think if everyone analyzed how they spent their time, they could come up with a way to play more.

I agree, it's easy to get obsessed with collecting, and it's definitely bitten me too. I do my best to only buy games that I will actually play someday. But honestly I've not been able to follow that rule completely. I'll buy a cheap game just because, it's only a buck or two, or it's a good deal, I can resell it and never do.

I have a priority list of the next games I'll play, about 90% of games I own, I probably will not complete.

I keep going back and forth wether or not to go for a complete ntsc set, I very well might on accident, buying a few games here and there till I am only a hundred away or something. Coming up with places to stash the games keeps getting harder for me.
  • This is a quandary I've thought about before. Sometimes I get all excited about some rare game that I've tracked down and then I never play it. I think it is just human nature that we need to possess things. Don't get me wrong, I still play my games sometimes, but I just seem to be get more excited about hunting for them.
  • i collect just as much as i play. i play super mario kart snes everynight. if someone offers me the right price ill let anything go besides my mario games though.
  • Well, I must admit that as far as NES goes, I'm much more of a collector than a gamer. It really is more of an obsessive tendency to "want them all" (however that's individually defined), as opposed to buying solely to play. Don't get me wrong -- I love playing some NES, but in terms of purchasing any cart at any given time, it's more likely because I want it...for the collection. To fill that void. Sometimes I think I treat my collection more as an art piece than as a bunch of video games. image

But, I still play my Wii (and occasional PC title) quite a bit, so I suppose I'm more of a current gen gamer, even though many of the newer games I play look somewhat old-school (i.e. Cave Story, Mega Man 9, Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth). I think I only have around 15 Wii titles, but I've played the crap out of them all. image
  • I'm definately more of a gamer than a collector.

I might make an occasional run to a couple game stores (every couple of weeks/months/when I'm near one for another reason), but for the most part I'm only on here during my down time at work. The only time I ever sign on NA at home is when I'm waiting to hear back from someone or to close a deal.

On the opposite side, I make time almost every night that I'm home to play whatever game I'm currently working on. One of the main reasons I got into collecting was because I loved having so many choices of what to play next. I also like to jump around from system to system. As my favorite console is NES I tend to play a few games in a row before moving on, but then I might play Wii next or Genesis or Gameboy, etc.

That being said, my backlog of games is humongous, but as I mentioned before I love the options. I'm nearing the end of my NES collection and at the moment I don't plan on collecting for another system so I would imagine gaming will take an even larger hold over collecting. Granted, I still have a laundry list of games for pretty much every system that I don't have but would like to play someday and I don't see that changing. With so many systems I like to play and so many games out there, I'll never run out of options. Plus I love talking about gaming so I'm 100% sure I'll always be around the collecting scene, but for me gaming comes first.
  • I collect more than I play.
  • Since I started programming, I haven't played very much at all. I need to get my stuff back out and hit it maybe this weekend. Programming is too addicting. Making your own game is so much fun.
  • I think I collect more than i play probably, but I've always had the "collector's bug" whether it was sports cards as a kid, magic: the gathering as a teen, so forth so on. The one saving grace to this being, that I feel I can get way more interaction with my collection when I want to, It's not just something to look at and say "well, there it is" every morning. Plus video games are one of the easiest ways to make myself or most people I know nostalgia pretty hard and pop in a cart or two.
  • I defintely collect more. Working 2 jobs leaves me no time to play...it helps collecting that one job is at PnT and I am in charge of retro...also helps the store is right by 2 other "hot spots" in the area for games...
