Ever heard of CXG???

I am in Dallas for the weekend and went to a store called CXG or CGX or something to that effect. I was excited because it was the first store I found all weekend that carried retro stuff. I see the SNES boxes on the wall displaying the titles and the first big name title I see is Mario RPG. I picked it up to see how their prices were going to be....$69.95!!!! I'm thinking WTF!! My wife finds Secret of Mana...$89.95! I don't see how the place stays in business. I asked the girl working the prices on the NES stuff. She said it varies but all Mario and Zelda games were $30 each.

Who pays these prices? Someone came in and asked if they had any N64 systems. She said "Yeah, I think I have one left. It is $49.95." Also, I noticed SNES systems were $79.95. Then I noticed a Neo Geo Gold AES system on the wall. Of course, I had to ask. It was a mere $479.95. I could not believe they charged those prices. They had Genny games as well around $50. I know some of you have seen stores like this, but this was definitely my first store to see like this. Wow!!!

  • What are you talking about? Those prices are solid I am suprised you didn't snag any of the games or systems. Those are some pretty insane game prices I tell you i wouldnt buy a thing from that store
  • I told a private store owner that had prices like these that he was flat out crazy when I saw a Secret of Mana cart only at $60. He told me if I could fine it cheaper locally he'd give his to me. We shook on it. I drove down the street 8 minutes to The Exchange, bought it cart only for $18 and drove back to him with the receipt. He took it down and handed it to me. I didn't need it anyways I already had multiple copies but still, it was the principal of it. Drove back to The Exchange, returned the one I had bought and walked away with a free SOM. That was a triumphant day.
  • lol sounds like a place i went to in Arkansas called Gamer's Point. Sega Games were atleast 5 each and they were sports games. Anything of substance on sega like Zombies ate my neighbors was like 20. All NES games were way overpriced. Commons such as NES playaction football was 6 bucks. I wont even start how expensive the N64 carts were. This place tried to make it look good inside with fancy video game displays and retro video game music, but that place totally sucked. RIP OFF
  • I went to a local CD/Video Game store down in Missouri and it was full of $30 Zelda's and Mario's. Someone has to be paying these prices otherwise they'd all be out of business.
  • The local record store is hit and miss. The key to these stores is gain good reprotoire with the owner and then you can haggle the price down to reasonability (e.g. around what you would get off the internet when you include shipping). But the thing is, most of these places charge these prices because they paid 25%-50% of that price for the game itself.
  • Yeah, we have a place locally called the B&I. He is horrible with his pricing. ANY 2600 game is $5.00 and the cheapest NES game...think of commons...are at least $7.00. I think he checks ebay and marks up 25%. Not sure how he stays in business, but I did see somebody buy a orange zapper for $10 from him...well if people are willing to pay it...

I still stop by once a month. "Just in case"...you never know when you see a SE in the wild...

This reminds me of a place I frequent. Beat up NES controllers $10 a piece. Every NES game way over priced. But I always come back thinking something rare would pop up.
  • I think we all have one or more of these in our respective towns. I've got a guy here wants $30 for Super Mario World. Another place wants $5 min. for Atari 2600 games, you know like Pac-man and Combat... I think they prey upon those new to the hobby who have no idea that you can get those games for waaaay cheaper. Comparatively, $30 for SMW is cheap compared to $60 for a modern game, so they don't really question it.
  • I can totally relate to places with horrible pricing. I have a few Play n Trades in my area, they actually underprice some of the more expensive games, but one takes horrible pricing to a whole new level. This place had Kid Icarus for $45! Also, who can forget the notorious SMB/DH at only a mere $25. I told the guy he had crazy prices and that the other Play n Trades were pricing their games way lower, which they were, and he tells me his are "guaranteed to work, not like those other guys". What a joke!

That is funny you should mention that. I work for a PnT. And yes since they are independently owned and operated....corporate still has all the games in the computer system with prices...That is weird that one owner would take the time to change his prices...My owners love me and trust the prices I tell them...that is, if the computer is wrong...which it is usually pretty close...with the exemption of SE...they were selling it for $200
  • CGX is a rip off, also they show boxes on the wall but they only sell the carts, not the boxes with the games.

The only time i ever go there is when I have a bunch of extra crap for trade. They were giving like $15 store credit for Zelda carts, $20 for Final Fantasy 1 carts, and other stuff like that, so I traded a bunch of extra carts I found around for $2 each or so and got like $150 in store credit and got a DS Lite about a year or so ago.

That is about it for that place, if you are in Dallas for any longer, go to Movie Trading Companies. Sometimes you can get really good stuff there. The games are the same price cart or boxed, so you might get lucky. I have in the past

Haha, there is a store nearby that wreaks of smoke, and sells SoM for $60. They have all their prices in their computer. Chrono Trigger cart only for $80.

There's a used record shop nearby that actually has a really big collection of older games, but their prices are so incredibly jacked up I stopped going in. PS1 RPGs like Final Fantasy VII, Xenogears, Breath of Fire III, Suikoden I, for $60-80. They were asking $30 for a beat up MTPO BOX only. Games like Super Mario World, and All-Stars are $30+.

In the Seattle area, Pink Godzilla (or Gorilla) is a local "chain" (two stores) that have flashy arcade machines and lights so they attract a lot of curious, nostalgic folk are looking for old school memories. Some prices are OK, but some are upwards of a 100% markup on Ebay prices. A guy brought in a SNES mini to trade in, and got $16 CREDIT. Ridiculous! Valkyrie Profile is $120. And what's really lame is that they reseal a lot of their boxed stuff. Like...all of it. Ugh.

If any of you are in the Seattle area, I would really recommend going into Another Castle Video Games in Edmonds. It's a guy and his brother attempting to compete, but they've kept their prices fairly competitive. Some of the rarer stuff has a little markup, but lots of games like Contra, MTPO, Zeldas, etc., seemed to be in the Ebay plus shipping range. Not too bad and they don't seem to be attempting to trick folks into buying a $70 SNES. Whenever I buy lots locally, I unload some of the commons w/systems to them. Not too bad.
  • My local Play N Trade wanted $300 for a cart-only Chrono Trigger.

Yep, when I first moved here and I asked around about classic gaming stores everyone mentioned Pink Godzilla. I went there twice and definitely had my fill. Their prices are awful!

Another Castle is great though. Anyone in the Seattle area should definitely give his store a try image

  • Place here locally called GameZilla that is way overpriced, they think just because they clean and shrink-wrap all their systems and games and keep them locked up in a display case that they can charge outrageous prices for them. I refuse to set foot in the door of that store, haven't been in there in a long time.
  • There aren't any PnT's in Illinois, but I just found a few near my hometown (Baton Rouge, LA). I guess I'll be hitting them up when I go home for the summer.
  • just makes you want to take a whole box of mario/duck hunt in and ask what you can get for them, say $5 each?  ha ha
  • Theres this place in Edmonton I like to go to because they have all sorts of old collector stuff. I really just like to look at all the old toys they have, but I feel guilty never buying anything, they have a bunch of NES carts, so once in a while I check the prices on the NES carts they have. Mega Man 2 loose: 65$, everything else: 30-50$ - Sheesh even when I'm feeling charitable I can't justify that sort of crap. It sucks because I remember when I was young that store seriously rocked. I used to buy Intellivision games there for 25 cents a peice.

my local PnT is awesome.  Owner is cool as hell.  I stop in every week just to BS.  Everytime I come in he always has a stack of random stuff and asks me what he should price it at.  He listens to me every time.  Also gives me killer deals on everything.
  • That is the worst store ever!!! If you want some local places pm me and i give you some addresses and stores around dallas
  • Most of the stores around me are pretty reasonable about their stuff, and 25 cent super commons are not unheard of. But now and then they will have classics like Contra priced just a little to high, but not outrageous. Except Buybacks, F that place, there is a topic about them and their insane prices on here somewhere. I live semi near Detroit, so I check their craigslist every now and then and the prices for games on there is just laughable, like an NES and Super Mario 3 for $100.
  • It's kinda of hit or miss in my area for overpriced games. Sometimes the same place you can find a great deal, other times they are a bit pricy. Your CXG is like our Slackers, they charge CIB prices for Loose Carts.
  • My local game store is a similar ripoff to the others mentioned here... $30 SMB 3, $20 SMB/DH, at least $10 for every common. They have 50% off day once per year, the only time that some of their prices are even somewhat reasonable. Unfortunately, that day is December 26th, my birthday, along with my twin sister and one of my other brothers who happens to share my birthday. So I always am stuck at parties during 50% off day.
  • yeah, We have a place called lunar video games around here. It is horrible.

Haha, you mean my thread about Buybacks?

Things haven't really changed there, either.  Saw SNES Mortal Kombat III for $75.00 two weeks ago, and I can't remember what the other one was.  But like others have said, I only go there in hopes they'll have something cool anyway.
