Nintendo REALLY needs to do a big 25th anniversary celebration of the NES

As all of you know, this year marks the 25th anniversary of the
original NES here in the US. I just sent Nintendo this email with
suggestions on how they could commemorate it:

Hi there, I have been a big fan of Nintendo since 1990
when I got my first NES for my 10th birthday and proudly own all five
of your home consoles, the Game Boy Player, and I hope to get the new
DS XL soon as well.

That being said, do you realize that this year marks the 25th
anniversary of the original NES? I was wondering if Nintendo has any
big plans for celebrating or commemorating the console that not only
started it all for Nintendo, but saved the video game world from the
brink of extinction after the big 1983 video game crash. My ideas
include a "Best Of" collection of NES games for the DS or Wii, a
special discount on NES games on the Virtual Console (perhaps 250 Wii
Points to match 25 years of NES?), a special silver colored NES
(perhaps individually serial numbered out of 25,000?), or perhaps a
HUGE collector's edition issue of Nintendo Power perhaps covering every
NES game made in the US? The possibilities are endless!

But the bottom line, the NES is considered by many to be the greatest
video game console of all time (and in those days people often called
video games as "playing Nintendo") and it deserves a BIG TIME
celebration this year.

And yes, I only got the typical form letter response telling me they have not announced any plans like these but to
keep informed at nintendo.com of all the latest
announcements/updates--I've sent suggestions to them before. But still,
I had to do SOMETHING.

The only question is, will Nintendo actually do anything? They sure
didn't do jack diddly to celebrate Mario's 25th anniversary in 2006,
which is an absolute shame since Sega (Sonic) and Capcom (Mega Man) had
no problem at all celebrating their mascot's 10th, 15th, and 20th
birthdays with special commemorative logos and other things.

Or maybe it's up to NintendoAge and other big NES websites to step up to the plate and throw a big 25th anniversary bash and maybe even design a nice commemorative 25th anniversary logo!

  • Very cool suggestions! Just so I'm clear, according to wikipedia the NES was released in the United States on October 18, 1985, is that correct?
  • i agree with maybe a limited edition run of a nes with maybe a limited edition black box games just like they used to make em. i think there would be some nice demand for that

I really don't see that ever happening. The demand would be high among collectors, but anyone else would look right past them. The limited edition systems would have no current software support and the limited edition games would have no hardware support. It's just not logical.

What I could see them doing, is perhaps re-releasing the black box games (or some set) in collections for the DS like Estil mentioned.

He also mentioned a huge commemortive issue of Nintendo Power covering every game. That would be absolutely incredible, but with so many games it just doesn't seem practical.
  • How about a limited edition Wii that looks like the NES? Not that that would be THE reason IMO to finally buy a Wii. It would just boost my motivation.

The Black Box theory sounds interesting. I could also imagine them packing the release titles onto one DS cart. Maybe spice up games like Ice Climber with an online VS. mode.
  • Maybe a special NES console, with integrated games, like the Atari Flashback?

While something along those lines would be cool, I don't see it happening simply because of the limited black box collection they released for the GBA several years back. I really hope they do something though.

it is indeed correct.  It sold exclusively at FAO Schwartz in NYC and a few months later launched nationwide.
  • I would love to see a NES edition wii or DSi with the mario games preloaded on them. Maybe a few other top selling NES games aswell.
  • A licensed NES clone would be nice image .

Since Nintendo dated Mario's Birth at September 13th 1985 I don't see why they would have had his 25th birthday already. They did celebrate his 20th on September 13th 2005.. I see no reason why they won't celebrate his 25th... when it actually arrives.

I am guessing they consider his birth to be from the game Super Mario Bros. Though his first named appearance was in Mario Bros. the arcade game, and he also appeared in Donkey Kong, but he was not Mario, he was "Jump Man".

I doubt Nintendo is gonna celebrate his birthday every other year. They will probably stick with 1985.
  • I believe Mario was named first in Donkey Kong Jr. Whenever that was. image
  • a wii nes would be sweet, lift the top to put the disc in, the incognito wii, ha ha ha badass.

yea i was just thinking about it. once collectors got their games there would be no more demand for them...a wii or ds version would be cool

  • Yeah, NOA really should do something special for the NES's 25th B-day. I'm sure there are a lot of owners of the Wii and DS that grew up playing the NES, so it's not like, the occasion wouldn't be profitable for Nintendo. Something so impactful such as the success of the NES in NA should definitely be celebrated, but I don't think it's going to happen.  Nintendo is probably too busy doing stuff with the Wii/DS and R&D for their future products such as "3DS" etc.
  • 25 years kind of seems like a pretty arbitrary number to me. I doubt they'll do anything.
  • They did release special NES style GBAs and classic NES games for GBA, so anything is possible, I suppose.

  • Well, the latest issue of Nintendo Power did a big 25th anniversary celebration. I guess that's a start.
  • How about they release a new NES game?

And by new I mean old.

Earthbound was fully translated and everything, make it an official release!
  • Two words..

    "Sim City"

    Nes release, nuff' said!

Probably. At least Pat has the right idea with his NES marathon.
  • I wish they would do something for it, but I doubt it. At least they came out with the Wii game in Japan.

And that is probably ALL they will do for it. Nintendo doesnt ever seem sentimental about its past.
  • Well, there is the Super Mario All Stars for the Wii release. Not really interesting, but at least something

  • I know G4TV is having a big 25th NES special. One of their producers asked to do on on camera interview with me for the show, but I was in Mexico on the honeymoon so the timing didn't work out :-/

  • would be cool. don't see it happening at all though. especially in 11 days. no way they would be able to plan/make/create a system or whatnot in that short of a time frame.

Yep me too, how cool would that have been.  I had been going back with the producers for about a week+ they were going to fly into Sea-Tac and head over here.  They were looking at 8 hours of filming my collection, me playing NES, interviews, etc.  But at the last minute they decided they weren't going to do a collector spotlight angle for the show.  For any who are interested the special will be on X-Play on 10/18.

Looking back at it now, maybe I shouldn't have asked to spend one on one time with Morgan as my pay for doing the show?

  • I can't believe they're not releasing "best of the NES" Wii discs; like they could do top 100 NES games of all time on it or something.

a lot of the game they don't have the rights to re-release them in the wiishop. i think they would just put in all of there own games as filler like golf or pinball. which aren't really... good or yoshi / cookie.
  • I think Nintendo makes a lot of their decisions, if not all, based on a business perspective with the long term goal of maximizing profit, as any publicly owned company would. For instance, if they did decide to do things that would be showcasing the 8bit NES in anyway they are taking focus away from their newer systems, such as the Wii, DSi, and soon 3DS, which are generating the current majority of their revenue. They may do somehting small to show their history for good Public Relations in the industry, but they don't want to spotlight out of date games that are not a major source of their revneue anymore. I know the Virtual Console is now a current source of their revenue, but I do not think they are generating massive profits from that. However, a special Nintendo Power issue would be a logical choice for them because calssic gamers would be interested in purchasing the issue as well as next gen gamers, if it is included with modern game content.
  • Hey Everyone,

FYI, Retro Gamer Magazine, a UK Magazine that is devoted solely to covering Retro Video Games, is having their recent issue (#82) devoted to the 25th Anniversary of Nintendo and showcasing 25 years of Mario. Here is the link if you are interested in checking it out.
