  • Hey guys, I just joined the forums so I could get a bit of info. I recently found my first ever NES, or rather my dad did and gave it to me since I told him I had been looking for it. Anyway, it was great to have it back in my hands after all these years of it being packed away (I had other NES's to play in the meantime), and as I was cleaning it up, I noticed it was serial number N0006190. I've read about the test market NES's and was wondering if this was one? Also, what number did they start with, I can only assume N0000001? Just would like to get a bit more info if you guys have it to share. Thanks in advance to anyone who can share some info with me.

    I've had this since 03.

One weekend i was going to a local flea market with my cousin in concord ca,as we were exiting the freeway my cousin tells me " i have a feeling your gonna find a top loader today "and i shit you not as we are walking through he was on one side of the row and i was on the other there sat a top loader with dog bone and zapper with cords and quickly asked the man how much and he tells me 15 dollars, i quickly say deal and as i hand over the money my cousin spots me holding it and has a shocked look on his face and when i tell him how much i spent and he had a depressed look on his face , pretty much ruined his day but made my day.

    day i wont forget
  • Hey Brett, where are you at in OKC? I am near Lake Hefner. Send me a PM some time and we can get together and I can steal your low SN Toaster, err I mean we can have a beer or something.

That's interesting, because the first test market was NYC in 1985. They supposedly sold about 90,000 systems in 1985. Do you know exactly when it was purchased, and at what store?
  • Well, I think I was still 4 years old, and I was born Oct of 1981, so would have to have been before Oct of 1986. Could've been much earlier than that though. It's really hard to place it. I had a pretty in depth convo with my dad, and we deduced that it probably came from a place called Montgomery Wards. I'm thinking some backstock may have gotten sent back to Nintendo, and then redistributed when they made the mass launch in 1986. I am just assuming something like that happened that would have placed that serial in this part of the country. I'm hearing so many different things from different people, it's hard to discern who actually knows their shit and who's just regurgitating random info they heard.
  • Great story brettybluevein! As far as the info presented regarding the number of NESs at launch, and where they were released, this information I have learned from G4. Back when G4 was cool, and had that Icons show, they said that the first release market was indeed NYC, and nearly 50,000 were sold. Other sources (that I cannot recollect right now) say that the next market was west coast (LA I believe) followed by the rest of the US by 1986. However, your story kinda puts a hole in that story! Your console is kinda far from that test market. At best, we can only speculate that there was indeed a N000001 console out there, and most likely somewhere at Nintendo (or perhaps a landfill somewhere ) but our research here lends credence to the theory. Keep those numbers coming guys!
  • Updated Open Office file
  • N0203814 NES-CPU-03 1985, smooth top, 'no. 1' and inside Washington number on bottom
  • Great info, and great first post! Welcome to NA!
  • N8748109, a Canadian machine in a box from 1993 that is Canadian (Basic Set) (also it's post-Mattel distribution but the console has a Mattel plate on the base, possibly just stock obtained by Nintendo.
  • Will add you later, after I get off work. Do you have a pic of that Mattel plate? I dont think I have seen that!
  • Got another one... This model is a later one than my last ones:

    N30312880
  • Gotcha down Blooper!
  • ^ Cool got another one I just bought for myself at the retro store I work at.

It's a smooth top, and the # is N4173532. I had to take a flathead screwdriver to clean off the dingleberries (yeah seriously) that covered the number in order to see it. >:\

Okay, I might have a dumb question, but since I do work at a game store, do you want the serials for the systems that I have for sell there even though I don't really personally own them? I still have yet to pull stuff in my storage that's buried in there, but I got a bunch at work that you can put in the list if you want.
  • It wouldnt hurt especially if there is something unique about any of them. I'm still trying to close the gap on the whole smooth/textured top deal, plus I think it would be cool if we could find a couple systems that are sequentially numbered. I am particularly wanting to see! I would LOVE to own a pair numbered together consoles
  • ^ Not sure if I can find anything unique, but I'll be sure to look. I'm kinda over analytical, so I'll even document the smallest change if there is one between systems. I'll have to check next Friday when I go back to work. (Heck, it gives me something to do since I'm pretty bored on Fridays anyways, lol)

And yeah, if I see any sequentially numbered in any order, I'll definitely drop you a PM. :3

  • Hey, I'm all about the small details Anything you can spot would be interesting to me!

    edit: updated Works database file
  • Here's the serial numbers on all of my consoles

    N4220887 (from a Deluxe Set)

N21240412 (from a Control Deck set w/ Super Mario Bros)

N7561101 (from a gray Zapper Action Set)

N850672983 (loose red customer service label unit w/ smooth top)
  • Hey, I will add yours to the list. BTW, do you have some pics of that last one? Im curious about the whole description. A smooth top, with the red CS label, and that N85 SN is unusual. I'm sure the top could have been swapped out at some point, and I'm assuming the SN could be a factory refurbished number. Any pics of the bottom of the console?
  • Also, I have SN N7564001, which makes me pretty interested in your N7561101 Let me know if you ever want to part with it I an trying to find sequential numbered systems. This may be as close as I can get!
  • Here's a picture of the bottom of the service unit. It has a label on the motherboard stating that it's a factory refurbished console as well. If you are interested in it, let me know. I've already got three CIB consoles and two more loose ones on the way so I'm not overly attached to it.

  • Here's a couple I recently picked up. Thought it was weird the cpu-08 had a 1989 date on the board as I think all the later revisions are back to 1987.
