NA Chat, please use your NA as your chat name

Ok, I like to mess around in chat with my name just as much as anyone else, but lately it's become a problem.  So I am asking everyone right here and now, can you please use your NA name when signing into chat?  Please, this will help avoid bad situations.  The last thing anyone wants is for chat to become a problem, because once it is a problem, it will simply go away. Then we will have to resort to using a regular tinychat room and risk trolls.

So this is my plea, can everyone please use the regular NA name when going into chat?

I'm bad about this myself, I've used various names, Paul, Premiumpaul, nacampout, etc. but I've realized and seen how this is a problem, and before it becomes a large problem, I'm asking everyone who uses the NA chatroom to please use their NA name as their chat name.

well since that contains your full na name I dont' see a problem.
  • I agree. I will no say whom, but there was somebody that changed their name to another member and was goofing off. You should only be using your name, not anybody else's

  • Ok, no problem
  • I think this is a great request!
  • Agreed. Good call Paul.
  • Now we see a surge in username changes....image
  • I really need to get a mic. I already post on here than most would probably like, might as well take the journey and go full audio.
  • I wish it would automatically sign you in with your NA username and you couldn't change it (only append something like AFK, or STATUS_DRUNK). I hate how it has all these options for signing in now.
  • It kind of bugs me when I go in there and a random name I dont know says Hi Adam, and its an NA member who isnt using their handle... Its not a recent development or anything, but I am with Paul on this one.
  • You'd deprive me of the joy of being Flint_Ironstag?

    +1

I don't see why it's even an option to choose your own name of the moment.
  • I figure it's okay if it's obvious who it is...if I were to sign in as "Da Wiz" I don't think anyone would be confused, but it has been a bit of an issue where it's like "Who the fuck is this?" image
  • Na only links to a free chat site. There is no option to limit usernames, that's why I am asking everyone to do this.

I always knew your name was an abbreviation. I'll bet the local priests are pissed off about the competition.

There has to be a decent open source chat client that we could host locally on the site that would alleviate these problems. I agree, it is a pain when people mess around like that, but anyone who wants to be malicious still has the option.

I have a feeling that if there were such an option, it would've been implimented by now...

There are numerous IRC daemons... apparently, that's not how anyone wants to chat anymore though, so afaik, that only leaves jabber, and I haven't used jabber multi-user chats in a while, so I don't even know if the daemon supports it anymore?

I stay away from the chat because it's tinychat... but that's just me. I'm probably in the minority, preferring IRC.
  • IRC is the best chat client I've ever used as well but from what I recall, NA originally used an IRC client and there wasn't much of a turn out?

We also only had 1/10 the userbase at the time.

    Edit -

    Original Chat Room - January 8th, 2007

    NA hits 300 members - August 21st, 2007
  • Biggest trouble is people get used to features like video in the chat, and that's a lot harder to find free elsewhere...
  • Having the free webcam service is very awesome, which is why I like Tinychat.

IRC is great if you're somewhat computer savy. Tinychat is great for the masses.
I liked the IRC room, but there were like 5 or 6 people in it and that's it.

  • I thought this was standard practice. O'well, if i don't know who you are, I probably won't talk to you anyway...just because I am like that...
  • As Zzap said the cameras are a central feature of the chat room now, so moving to something like IRC again is not an option.  However the #nesdev IRC channel on efnet is still going if you want the more technical side (and almost always off topic).

Downloading an app is also a bad idea, so that cuts out jabber. AFAIK none of the web clients have camera support.
  • I've thought about installing Flash Media Server and doing this type of chat room myself (the coding isn't rocket science as it's somewhat native to FMS), but again, this is one more item that someone else can do better with a devoted tech staff (like TinyChat).

If TinyChat doesn't work out, I'll look into a paid service that has webcam support. The problem with TinyChat is that I did pay them for a year's worth and they lost my account. So now I can't login to manage anything and when I try to re-create an account, they say it already exists image And I've sent their tech support multiple emails, only to never once hear back. So we're between a rock and a hard place: TinyChat is great and horrible at the same time. Any company that can lose their customer login information more than once (this happened 3 times already), is not really a company headed for great success IMO.
  • Believe me Dain, Paul and I have tried to get back into your account to moderate the room in the past when there were some people that needed the boot and we couldn't fix it either.
