First Arcade Cabinet

Wow, this was pretty crazy. I've started browsing craigslist more since the summer ended and old video game sales have picked up quite a bit. So when I woke up this morning I checked again and found this beauty:

(#7893 I think)

The best part about it is that I picked it up for only $200! The cabinet is in a lot better condition than I expected. There is the expected wear on the art, some knicks and dings, a little bit of fading, etc. The guy said it's been sitting in his garage for 20 years and before that was a machine used at a local arcade. I checked the counter on it and it's been played over 146,000 times! Machine works perfectly. The monitor is nice and bright and so is the sign on top. It also came with the manual that has all the schematics and a corny 80's book titled "How to win at Pac-man"

I fixed a few minor things wrong with it, the screen was flickering so I adjusted the horizontal hold, the joystick wouldn't move up so I cleaned the contacts with a burnishing tool (it still doesnt move up very well.. I may need to get a new contact). This is my first machine so I don't know a lot about them. if anyone experienced with these could help me with the following problems it would be appreciated.

1) Some of the wires in the coin door are detached from where they are supposed to be. Really all I need is for someone to send me a picture of a door that has all the wires in place. If you could get me one I would really appreciate it.
2) There is a circuit board that is detached from the machine just laying on the bottom of the cabinet. I couldn't find anything about it in the manual so I really don't know what it's use is. If anyone could tell me that would be great. Here is a picture:

(It's the one attached to the yellow wire)

  • Wow if they charged 50 cents per play that means that this machine has earned it's arcade at least $73,000.
  • There's been a real nice Donkey Kong cabinet near me on CL for $550, but buying it would land me in the doghouse.
  • Do yourself a favor and just replace all of the microswitches. They're relatively cheap, and that will solve your joystick problem.
  • That's pretty awesome, I've always wanted an arcade cabinet, maybe Donkey Kong, Pac Man, or Galaga.
  • Your best bet is just to replace anything that isn't working up to snuff with the controls on it as it's a cheap fix. The problem you got really is figuring out that loose board and where those wires need to be in the coin mech to make it right again. I'd imagine google could come up with something with the wiring schematics, but pics likely as you wanted would help more. Considering the images show what appears to be a really solid machine I'd leave it alone as is otherwise unless something is truly worn as it just wouldn't unless you're really picky be worth blowing a wad on reproduction art.

I cleaned out all the dust in the bottom there and washed the sides down with soapy water. I'm not really sure what else I could use to help get the streaks off without rubbing off paint, so I'll probably leave that as is. I'm going to repaint the black where it's been rubbed off from people's hands on it. Other than that I think I'm going to leave it alone cosmetically. The Marquee is flawless and the monitor was 2x brighter after I cleaned the glass and the monitor.

If you know of anything that can get some streaks out, or paints you recommend for repainting the black shoot me a pm or post

  • I've always wanted a SMB arcade, but that one's really awesome too! Grats on the find!
  • I don't know personally, but and I'm not sure the rule here of linking other forums, but one of the admins of Gamer Theory (do a search on forums. that name .com) whose name is Jeff Rivera actively collects old arcade machines and pinball tables and does major repairs/overhauls for fun. That guy would know exact type, grade and quality of black paint if you want it done right, looking right, and to last.
  • Head over to the KLOV forums, they can help you the best.

    Where are you in Virginia?

I've got a DK cabinet that I'm in the midst of restoring that I'd be willing to let go of at some point, for a reasonable offer.

    +1

Looks to be in great condition! Nice pickup!
  • Nice score, man! I don't know much about these, but I've been restoring a Ms. Pacman for a while (they've got pretty much the same parts) and I think that board in your picture that's disconnected is just a filter card. If that is what it is, it would be connected between the main PCB and the wiring connector to prevent the machine from sending out some sort of RF interference that can mess up AM radio signals and can be removed without hurting anything (I've actually been reading that a lot of people take it out to help make the connection a little better and take one more potential problem out of the equation). I'm not positive, but that's my bet on what it is.
  • Nice, $200 for the cab. put in another $100 or so in restore work and you got yourself an awesome 80s arcade game, and one of the best too.

I've always wanted a cocktail Ms Pac-Man/Galaga table.
  • Wow, that a cool find
