I have 7, 5 screw super mario brothers carts.. worth anything? I also have 8, 5 screw gyromite carts am I rich
Check Matt's awesome thread for the variants that are worth money to certain variant collectors. Two variants that are missing from his list are 5-screw Jaws and 3-screw Volleyball. Both are tough to find.
And they changed the type of screws that were used. Check your 5-screw games; see the screws? You can remove them with a small flathead screwdriver. Now check your 3-screw games; can't use the flathead for those. You have to get a security bit (which is a good thing to have as a collector, anyways). They changed them for security and piracy reasons.
Not completely true: after 5-screw carts were phased out, some 3-screw carts actually had flathead screws for a short while (probably about 6 months or so). If I recall correctly, it was sometime in early to mid-1988 when the security screws were phased in.
Edit: As a matter of fact, if the carts have never been tampered with, I'd almost be willing to bet every one of the 3-screw variant carts with relative rarity of 9 or higher has flathead screws. Probably most of the 8's, as well.
After looking through alot of these posts i found ive got a 3-screw arkanoid. and youre right it does have 3 screws i can take out with a flat head screw driver.
Im guessing by what you said the 3-screw arkanoid is somewhat rare.
How rare is winter games 5-screw? Even better, mine has a board variant not listed on Bootgod. It uses MMC1 instead of 2 logic chips. Probably used until they got a version to cheapen it to two logic chips. This anything extra extra special?
Well then the binaries must be different, anyone have any carts to verify it, and even better, bump and compare binaries between the logic and MMC1 versions? I don't have a CopyNES to dump it.
I found a super pitfall on ebay other day in a 5 screw in very nice condition. I actually never knew that game was in a 5 screw until I saw the picture of it on ebay.
didn't know where else to ask this, but: i found a 5 screw Rush N' Attack for $4.99. should I grab it for that price or is it not really something worth $5?

The 5-screw version of Rush'n Attack is the harder to find of the two versions, but it's not super rare or anything. I guess you could pick it up if you plan on playing it, but you'll probably find it in a lot eventually. Bottom line, it's not something I would "rush" out to buy.
Can you tell if a cartridge is a 5 screw by the label? Really interested to know more about the 5 screw Mega Man and seeing to how you can by seeing a label
Sort of. If you look at the top label, look to the left and right of it. If the gray part of the cart is flat and smooth, you have a 5 screw. If you see a little gray plastic hinge, it's a 3 screw.
Yeah, they're actually referring to the physical number of screws holding the cart together. The 3 screw cart used the "hinges" (for lack of a better term) that Andy refers to instead of the two screws in the corner. This was presumably to save money on production by reducing the number of screws needed to make a cart (a few cents here or there adds up when you produce in huge numbers). Even if you see a cart perfectly straight on, unless you have a blurry picture you can easily tell once you know what to look for (hard to explain, but when you compare both side by side it's obvious).

Precisely. This is why blurry pics on eBay suck ass. Is it really that hard to take a clean, focused picture of a cartridge? When you can't see the top of the cart clearly in the pic, it's just a pain for a variant hunter.
Sorry to bump something this old but this was the most informative 5 screw thread I found.
Since Ive complete my loose VB collection and 2 shy of CIB I thought Id turn my attention elsewhere. Other than other variants of all Mortal Kombat titles and all NBA Jam TE ports, Ive been on a 5 screw kick.
Earlier in this thread, there was mention of 3 screw carts with flat head screws. Supposedly they are the early early 3 screws per what I read. I decided to go through my collection (just shy of 120 carts) and see if I had any of these. To my surprise I found a lot of them:
10 Yard Fight
Arkanoid
Baseball
DK 3
Goonies 2
Gotcha
Ice Hockey
Legend of Kage
Mighty BombJack
Pro Wrestling
Now since I havent owed this for all 25 years of their existence I cant vouch for their authentication. BUT I did notice they are all found in 5 screw carts minus Ice Hockey. Problem with it is that the cart is so nice that there is no way someone took it apart to clean it (but still very possible).
Just picked up a 5 screw Kid Icarus today and opened it up only to find out it is a battery board without a battery. Is that normal? The board say's battery, but there was never one there. Also has the pin's offset like on a adapter board...
Figure they were just using up the last of the boards before they made new ones...

I remember reading in another thread (very recently) that the early battery boards have the same offset pins so they are misleading. I dont know anything about the lack of battery though. Thats def interesting.
Just noticed while looking up Donkey Kong 3 that the information for that game seems off. Otherwise there's two DKs listed and the lower one's info doesn't match up.

I have a 5 screw cluclu... but its Can
5 screw is the common one anyway. It's 3 screw you gotta look out for.

Just thought Id throw this info out there.
maybe i missed it but what are the raritys between these and the security type screws?
This one is VERY informative.

no worries about bumping old threads...
