i have a passion for 5 screws. sooner or later i'll start replacing my 3's for 5's for the collection shelf.
That is funny. I was into collecting both 5 and 3 screws at one time...I was replacing all the 5's with 3's on my shelf so everything looked the same. Then I sold all my 5 screws to Braveheart at the PRGE last year. I guess the passion never caught on with me.
Is there a more recent copy of the 3 vs 5 screw rarity list? The most recent post with a chart is in this thread (the above post by coffeewithmrsaturn), dated 1/26/2013.
The following games have only come in the 5-screw variation (meaning there are no known 3-screw variants, EVERY other NES game came with 3-screw variants)
Clu Clu Land
Chubby Cherub
Gumshoe
M.U.S.C.L.E. Tag Team Match (Debated - some claim to have seen 3-screws, the one on YouTube is fake too)
Soccer

The following have known 5-screw variants, but also came in 3-screw variants. Some are extremely rare (e.g. Mega Man 1, or Stadium Events) and some are extremely common (10-Yard Fight)

Every other game came exclusively in three screw variants with the exemption of some Konami and Ultra games which are still not fully understood as to why they have 5 screw variants....also, R.C. Pro-Am for whatever reason has a 5 screw variant but that needs more research before being added to the list.

Thanks for the reply, JosephLeo. Is this list being actively maintained? I'm curious as I have been looking for and collecting the variants. Is there an active rarity rating?
I like to believe that Soccer, and Muscle have 3 screw variants but I won't believe it until I see it for sale, or in the hands of a variant collector.
Edit: Correction
Seems one 3-screw Soccer surfaced on AtariAge....also, one 3-screw Gumshoe surfaced here on NintendoAge in 2010.
I personally had the impression that no US Soccer 3 screw was confirmed, yet Al Bailey's list have it at rarity 9 and another list on NA have it at 10. Is it just speculation or there are truly some confirmed copies known here?

I used to keep an eye out for these fairly regularly and I've never come across one. I think Volleyball was a 9 or 10 on the rarity list and I've come across several of those.
Just picked up a 5 screw Kid Icarus today and opened it up only to find out it is a battery board without a battery. Is that normal? The board say's battery, but there was never one there. Also has the pin's offset like on a adapter board...
Figure they were just using up the last of the boards before they made new ones...
Im sure by now you got your answer but Im only replying just in case this happens to someone else.
Some games use extra 'ram' space for their games to run. Other games use that space for saves which have a battery. With a little bit of hacking tho, games like Metroid and Kid Icarus (which both have that extra ram space) can be made saveable (in fact for Metroid someone already has). But this is pretty common, altho more boards like that have a battery than dont.
Im also posting in this because I just grabbed a 5 screw Mike Tysons Punch Out. Just waiting for it in the mail.

I just picked up a 5 screw kid Icarus thinking it had a converter because of the offset pin. Only to find the battery board with no battery. Is this a (drum roll) variant?

Vegas Dream has the same thing: The board has a spot for a battery but none is present and there's no save feature. Could be wrong on this but I think Metroid does as well?
Hello, I just acquired an 5 screw Nes copy of Tmnt 3 and I wanted to see of Nintendo Age can verify that it is a true original. I compared it to my 3 screw variant. I will try to upload pictures so that it can be confirmed or proven not to be an original.

its Konami, and they had several 5 screw misprints so it would be believable. Welcome the the site btw

Seeing as this anomaly is only featured with only one company it's hard to call this a misprint but they were most likely refurbished carts using old stock what ever they had at hand
Below is a link I posted of the cover from my 5 screw New Tmnt 3 copy. The eBay seller reasurred me that this is a true original and not an refurbished copy. So I wanted to post it so that Nintendo Age can verify its authenticity. I have more photos if needed like one from the back and another from a birds eye view. I hope that it can be verified as a true copy so that I may be added to the odd variant collectors forum.

i understand that i have reasearched these they are odd in deed but i do not think they are a misprint or manufacturing defect
without seeing the back of the game it should be lacking a back label. it seems that these were sent back to kanomi who with some damage they in turn reprinted the labels slapped them in a new cart shell and sent them back out.
the lack of the back label seems to indicate the replacing of the shell happend after the supplies were exhaused or happened in a different location
then the factory that they were originally made in
Whats awesome about this is that this is the first 5 screw Konami game released in 1992. Up until then it seemed to be just up to late 91 with Tiny Toons.
These are normal 5 screw Konami games officially released. All 87:
- Gradius (1987)
- Track and Field (1987)
- Stinger (1987)
- Top Gun (1987)
- Rush n' Attack (1987)
- Double Dribble (1987)
- Goonies 2 (1987 Very uncommon)
- Castlevania (1987, a little uncommon)
Konami:
- Castlevania 2 Simons Quest (1988)
- Contra (1988)
- Jackal (1988)
- Adventures of Bayou Billy (1989)
- Track and Field 2 (1989)
- Super C (1990)
- Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego (1991)
- Tiny Toons (Dec 1991)
- TMNT 3 (1992)
Ultra:
- Metal Gear (1988)
- Skate or Die (1988)
- Q*Bert (1989)
- Silent Service (1989)
- TMNT (1989)
- Defender of the Crown (1989) **UPDATED**
- Kings of the Beach (1990)
- Rollergames (1990)
- Snakes Revenge (1990)
- TMNT 2 (1990)
- Cyber Series Base Wars (1991)
- Ski or Die (1991)
These games have not been found to have a 5 screw demo/refurb carts before 1992:
My friends I think we or me I should say have been dipped. Looking closer my copy of the 5 screw Nes Tmnt 3's Nintendo Seal of Quality on top says "Unofficial" and doesn't bling like my 3 screw does, hit me up, If so this EBay seller is going to have a fucking field day with negative ratings.

Every other game came exclusively in three screw variants with the exemption of some Konami and Ultra games which are still not fully understood as to why they have 5 screw variants....also, R.C. Pro-Am for whatever reason has a 5 screw variant but that needs more research before being added to the list.

no worries about bumping old threads...
This one is VERY informative.

Kid Icarus doesn't have a battery. And it can't have a converter because it was never a Famicom cart to begin with.
Nice.
