Poll of the Day (11/27/07)

No one ever seems to call my references... good for me I guess... I'm sure my friend's would find some way to screw me over!

My buddy just asked me to be his character reference for a job interview - and I'm quite the character! (Just look at my spiky red hair!)

He says, and I quote - "if they ask how well you know me you some how make them know that you know me well but that were not THAT good freinds

find a happy balance of making me sound greekgodlike in a not gay way"

No one called my references at any job interview, and not even on my passport application this summer...

  • I only list people I know who will give good references, so I've never been screwed over, and they always say I'm awesome..

What no NGD choice today Batty..

    LOL just kidding.

  • I know! I totally forgot! I'll have something for tomorrow!
  • When I used to be a restaurant GM I would have to give references all the time for past employees. I always told the truth, it they were terrible I said they were. If they were awesome I would make them sound great. I know I prevented a few people from getting jobs cause the people on the phone would laugh and say I know where to place this application now, file #13 (ie the trash).

Once I had a girl I caught stealing actually use me as a reference for a bank. The lady at the bank asked if I thought the girl was trustworthy and I busted out laughing. I had to explain that I caught her stealing and had to dock her pay check to pay the company back. The bank lady thought it was pretty funny that a person caught stealing money would use that reference for a bank, what an asshat.

  • Depending on your state a lot of that information may be private and you might be breaking some serious laws by giving that info. I'm pretty sure for my past employees I was only able to verify that they did indeed work for me for a period of time, and the reason for departure if they'd left already, but was unable to elaborate. I couldn't even verify a birthday/age.
  • You beat me to it, Dan. When I did references, I could pretty much only say if and when they worked there, as well as whether or not they were re-hireable (with no specifics). Anything other than that, and the person could sue us.
  • TN is an at will state. You can fire anyone for any reason at any time. You don't have to document reasons or anything here. I did anyways whenever I planned on firing people to cover my ass though. Most companies have the policy of only stating whether or not a person worked there, and whether or not they were eligible for re hire or not but that isn't law, just company policy to protect their ass in the even of being sued. Most the time if people left on bad terms they won't use you for a reference anyways.
