I would just suggest that everyone download the demo of this before buying it on PSN. I love the fact that they are doing this, and it is probably the best sonic game for me since genesis (not saying much, I know, hehe), but there are a few...control issues. I'm not even sure how to describe it, but play the game on your PS3, and then go plug in your Genesis and play Sonic 2 or 3, and the control is just better / more intuitive on the Genesis! I'm not sure exactly why this is the case - I love every other aspect of Sonic 4 - the classic gameplay and graphics, the music, etc., but something is just a tad off. Maybe you just get used to it? I'm just really confused about it.

It's the momentum. You actually have to gain some speed before you go gunning off like you did in the older Sonic games, and you don't go quite as fast as you did back in those games either.
Yeah - I got the hang of it after a little while of playing, but at first it was really weird. I just prefer the controls for the older games. I don't think it's a dealbreaker for me, but it could be for some people. Regardless, I definitely want to support this, as it's awesome that someone is embracing 2D again - gameplay is often sacrificed for graphics, so it's nice to see classic Sonic again after all these years.
Actually, my biggest frustration with the game is the fact that I keep losing my rings to those stupid camouflage things that just magically appear on the walls, hehe. Pretty clever though
The one problem I have with the controls is the fact that if you accidentally hit jump while in midair, it shoots you downward at an angle and totally screws up what you were trying to do. Also, there is a lock-on system with enemies that totally takes the challenge out of the game. How to hit a baddie in this game? Push A, then push A while in midair and the baddie is instantly dead.
Also, I noticed that Sonic is able to stand on a practically vertical curve without rolling backwards... I mean, they fixed that shit in Sonic 3.
As for the level design, the one I played is very ho-hum. Just your basic standard Sonic level - it looks just like the first stage from Sonic 2. Less fun, though.
Oh the game has "bad controls" because you pressed the wrong button.. sounds like you have bad control.
$15 is a steal, you guys are nuts. It is better than 95% of the $60 games out there.
The control is awesome. It feels really tight compared to New Super Mario Bros. Wii, where everything feels super floaty and not like Mario at all.
As for the lock on attack, Sonic 2 added on a spin dash, and no one was up in arms. Sonic 3 added selectable flying Tails. The two major arguments against this game are hilarious because they completely conflict.
"OMG this game is just the same old Sonic, I'm not paying $15 for the same old shit rehashed."
and
"OMG this isn't the same old Sonic, they added a new attack, blasphemy!, I won't waste $15 on something that isn't exactly cloned."
This is a true Sonic 4 the way it may have been in the 90's. You guys crying and complaining is a joke. If this game came out in the 90's you would have the same memories of it as 1, 2 and 3. Don't kid yourselves.

I don't know why you quoted "bad controls" as if that's what I said. Re-read my posts, I never said that. Also, I don't have "bad control", dropping out of the air only happened to me once. It left a bad taste in my mouth, and I mentioned it in my post after I played the demo. FYI, if you were trying to come off as a total dick here, mission accomplished!

The difference here is, the spin attack and floating tails didn't completely take the challenge out of hitting enemies. Sure, Tails made aiming easier, but it didn't completely take aiming out of the equation. You may enjoy mindlessly holding the joystick to the right and mashing the A button without having to time your jumps, but that takes all of the skill (read: fun) out of the game for people like me. People with "bad control", that is...

I didn't make either of these sensationalized arguments in quotes so I will assume this part wasn't directed at me, but I just have this to say: Unimaginative level design might be cool for you, but I was expecting something more. The addition of the new homing attack takes all of the skill out of hitting enemies in the game. If this had come out in the 90s, people wouldn't have been looking back on 2D Sonic with rose tinted glasses, and they would have seen the flaws in this game for what they are.

New Super Mario Bros wasn't called Super Mario Bros. 5, (I say 5 because Super Mario World is SMB4) so it didn't need to mirror the control tightness (ie. momentum, and as you put it, "floaty"ness) of the original series. Sonic 4 on the other hand, implies a direct sequel to the original 3 titles, so one would expect the game to control and feel the same (new homing attack aside), but it just feels totally different. If they'd called it "New Sonic the Hedgehog", then yes, I can see them changing the feel of the game. But does this control and feel like a direct sequel to Sonic 3? Hell no.
Let's say we got someone who had never played a Sonic game before. If I got them to play through Sonic 2, would they need to take a second to adjust to the feel of Sonic 3 if played immediately after Sonic 2 ended? Nope, it controls and feels the same. If you got that same person to play through Sonic 3, would they need to take a minute to adjust to the feel of Sonic 4? Hell yes they would, because it doesn't control and feel like the previous games. (Again, I am not referring to the homing attack.)
All this bitching about bad controls and the rest is highly inspiring me TO buy it as I can read between the bulls...lines and see that ultimately it's the first good Sonic effort in 2D since the mid 1990s on a home system.
Oh and JBO I think you finally hit on the why for me with Super Mario Bros on the Wii. I never could really nail down why I quit playing it. It never quite felt right to me, but also it just felt too much like an I've done this before and better so it's boring type thing. You're right it does float around, it's like gravity is broken or something.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is part of the "Super Mario Bros." line of games as stated at Nintendo.com.

You're right, nothing was directed at you except the smartass control issue comment. Lol. Sorry didn't mean to be an ass, just wanted to point that out.
A lot of people have been praising the level design, watch Craig at Screwattack.com go apeshit over it.
I don't think the game has flaws, other then stuff people are calling flaws, because the game is not an exact Sonic 3 clone. Different and new features are not a flaw unless they are glitched or something.

The spin dash allowed you to mindlessly drive through enemies on the ground. How is this different then busting through guys in the air?

"The one problem I have with the controls"
Seems like you had problems with the controls and complained about it. As far as my understanding of the English language goes, problems are a bad thing. You messed up one time, and now you have a grudge against the game? You made the mistake and you hold the game responsible.
One more thing I don't understand. The momentum thing you guys are talking about. Not sure exactly what you mean. I mostly played Sonic 2, and for sure you had to build up momentum in that game.
You know what? It's gotten to the point now that some gamers are no longer playing games to...play games. You can tell from the whining and complaining (check previous posts) they care more for obsessively picking everything apart and point out the "bad qualities" no matter how ridiculous it is. instead sitting down and enjoying a game.
I've paid the $15, play the game, beat it (sans Chaos Emeralds) and was the most spot on post-S&K Sonic game to date. Felt like it fit in the Sonic lineage while the same time offered lots of new elements that were effectively executed to keep the new game smell (i.e. Homing Shot). One of the few games I don't mind playing over and over again like in the retro days.
Put it to short n' sweet: fast, fun, enjoyable and....(I know it'll blow the whiners' minds) a good game.
Just had to give this thread a bump, to say that I just got every trophy available for the PSN for Sonic 4. Done with the game in two weeks, can't wait for Episode 2!
it's one of the VERY few download games that I bought and I'm loving it to bits! offcouse not as epic as the old versions, but my PS3 verion is great fun

I was even a Genesis.

Wow, that looks amazing. I'm going to finish watching the vid once it loads up. Seems to just be in the starting stages at the moment.

Wow. Hello Sonic 5!
How the heck did you get the gold trophy? That one is hard as hell. There is no way anyone can't take damage on E.G.G. Station Zone.
I too beat the game last night and got all 7 choas emeralds.
