How do I save in Tonic Trouble for the N64?

Last time I played this game I got pretty far, and I assumed it automatically saved, but when I loaded it again, there was no save file.  Now I've gotten pretty far again and I want to be able to save before I turn off the console.  

Does anyone know how to save in Tonic Trouble?

    I know this is a very old thread, but no one answered me the first time I posted, so I thought I'd bump it to see if anyone could help me.
