I beat my first Final Fantasy game last night.
As some of you guys that frequent chat may know, I have been playing Final Fantasy X for a little over a month. I beat it last night and I completely fell in love with it.
The story line was awesome and the idea of the sphere grid was genius. I cared alot about the characters development and backstory. Well, everyone except Kimari.
My question is: Seeing as I loved Final Fantasy X, what game would come close to all the elements in the game. I popped in X-2 and almost threw it down the street after 30 seconds. I'm also looking for turn based RPGs.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

o my god your back.. sweet! and on the FF, i could never get into those games
I never played them because I thought they all revolved around one story, which I later found out that they didn't. Major bummer.
The only RPG games I've ever played where Final Fantasy X and Chrono Trigger. I just want to play a game that plays like either of these titles. After being outraged at Final Fantasy X-2 because I felt like they butchered all that made X great, I popped in XII and the battle system so far hasn't made me a happy camper. I've only played it for a few minutes before work but apparently you select attack and it'll attack your enemy once your gauge fills up everytime so it basically does it for you. It feels like you have no control over the battle.
Otherwise, Dragon Quest VIII is a helluva a good time. Has a great story, turn based, and the graphics, while a bit different if you haven't played many cell-shaded games, are damn good for the PS2.
If you want to go really far down the turn-based path, check out any of the Final Fantasy Tactics games. The original PS1 game and it's PSP remake have a pretty hefty storyline. The GBA and DS Tactics games are bit more light-hearted fun.

I appreciate the help. Kingdom Hearts and FFX has kept me busy for awhile and now I'm stuck in a rut. I'll try out some of the games stated above.
I never played much of X but i'd go with others in saying vii. The main reason for this is that I love that game's magic and summon system. The Materia system was great. The gameplay is great, the music is awesome, and the story gets alittle bit WTF Japan, but it's good overall.
I dislike the whole WTF Japan stuff you mentioned about Final Fantasy 7. I still, to this day, don't understand all the love for that game. It's a good game sure, but part 6 was superior in every single way.
I say FF7 for PS1 is the best. Deep involved story, with amazing game play and some tear jerking moments. If you have not played it I say it is a must!
Ignore that, it's the fan base talking.
If you want some big name comparably fun turn based RPG go-at-it type stuff your best bet for long duration play and classic momentum is Dragon Quest 8. If you want another FF game, 8 was too wacky and the hosed up the basic game principles, but if you get FF9 that one is probably the best of the entire turn based RPG titles the system had, or at the least of the FF line as it was a mix of the great ideas of the 'N' era past with some good designs for its modern time that still stand.
X
VII
IV
IX
VIII
the rest can be overlooked imo although you should still play them
Tales of Destiny II
Final Fantasy IX
Legend of Dragoon
Rogue Galaxy
Lunar
Suikoden
Pick your poison...............
I completely agree. Completely.
FF7 was good, sure, but in my personal opinion, it was only about an average game. Nothing special, but not bad, either.
I'll be honest also: I'm no graphics whore, but I must admit, that game's terribad graphics partially ruined the experience for me.
I've been meaning to give Final Fantasy 3 on the nes a try. Is it worth getting a translated repro or should I just stick to the DS version?
Depends how stuck up you are on audio and visuals, oh and a more developed story. The Famicom version is later nes a/v for rpgs which is good, but they obviously aren't DS quality. The Famicom FF3 has a generic story like the original, you name your people and as you learn jobs you class them out, but it's all generic plot. The DS version names all the players, gives them a fleshed out story, and it twists little moments of the grand original story around that to make it seem more personal and fleshed out.
Outside of the changes in personality and fluff, it's the same damn game essentially.
