R.I.P. Sony PlayStation 2: 2000-2011

I'm pretty sure we're seeing the end of the PS2's production game-wise. I had high hopes for there to be some notable titles released towards the end of this year, but judging by various release schedueles, it looks like a WWE/WWF is going to be the last release we'll see in this territory. The system will continue to be produced and see a major price drop before they decide to completely pull the plug.

Regardless, I'm a Gamecube-loving shithead. So sue me.

  • I disagree mainly due to the fact that I'm an RPG fan and the PS2 blew the competition out of the water on RPG releases. Plus, the PS2 launched many new franchises such as God of War and Devil May Cry and the system had a stunning array of space shooters. Being backwards compatible was an amazing feature for it's time and PS2 really helped usher in the DVD format much as PS3 is doing now for Blu Ray.
  • I agree with you on the backwards compatibility aspect, since I could play the Barbie games on PS1, but there was a severe lack of definitive girls games for PS2.
  • Theyre still kicking out games. It will never die!
  • I would say that the RPG selection was solid for the most part. Dragon Warrior was just a huge game on the PS2. Final Fantasy X was decent and worthy of the PS1 games, Star Ocean was an epic game, and most of the sequels to the PS1 games like the Suikodens and Grandia were good additions. I would say that the RPGs were close to equal in terms of quality to the PS1, the main issue was that Final Fantasy didn't have a really strong showing for the system,
  • I just bought one again just so i can play both ps1 and ps2 games i had on my shelf. I think it`s a pretty decent system and has a fair share of good games.
  • PS2 Forever! Maybe the most versatile, universally appealing system since the NES. There is a reason this bad boy had the run it did. There is a reason is shellacked the PS3 when it launched. It is a solid, well-rounded system. May it never die.
  • I'm pretty sure Sony's going to keep the PS2 alive, because once again, we're hearing rumors like this year when Sony was going to pull the plug of the PS2 after Madden 11 and the fact that some people still can't afford a PS3 is understandable, and the sales have done fairly well which I think the PS2 is going to last for at least the next year, but I agree the time's running short for the PS2.
  • I hope there's a price cut on the slim. i've been wanting to buy one of those for awhile now but I never get around to it. I can't justify it when I've got the original ps2 anyway. I think the system has a ton of underrated games in its library. There are some real RPG gems in there, and really for any type of game. The dvd player is a definite plus too.
  • I do like it as a DVD player as well. It's been a useful alternative for the other DVD players in our house that have been skipping or dirty.
  • Damn, thought this was announcing Sony finally achieved backwards compatibility on PS3.
  • You have to be kidding me...

PS2 was LEAPS AND BOUNDS over GC/XBOX/DC in terms of being a great console.

Theres so many wicked games on PS2.

    Xbox just sucks.

Gamecube has a few good games.

Dreamcast has like maybe 20 good games...
  • The PS2 has a massive library filled with great games like Smugglers Run (one of my early favs), Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3, Gran Turismo 3 & 4, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas (can't count the amount of hours I played this. Addictive!), Shadow of Colossus, Ico, Manhunt, Onimusha, Escape From Monkey Island, Timesplitters, Red Faction, God of War series ect.. So many others I'm forgetting right now.

    The PS2 a turd? I think not!
  • Sony is attempting BC on newer PS3s, that 'patent' or whatever it was some months ago my brother tells me is legit, the question is will it release. Sony has a dongle on a cord that has the guts and code needed to bring PS2 back to PS3, and if it pops I'm dropping the cash on it.

Now really...PS2 the worst of the lot? Hardly. The GC got shunned, stiffed on RPGs, but it has a lot of unique 1st and 2nd party titles and despite being moderately shafted fantastic third party releases compared to the shit both wii and n64 got. The xbox though was the worst of the lot by far, sure they got a die hard halo orgy fanfest there and they kicked off the network play on the large scale but outside that nothing really stood out there at all, ever...hell they lived off halo alone for over a year to start. PS2 had a crap ton of great games and shit too, but the good to shit ratio was higher than Wii in this run and that says plenty to me especially with that(ps2) systems staying power. It brought up some great 2D and many 2d to 3D conversions from yesteryear but also gave us the Ico/SOTC games, GOW1 and 2, DQ8, and a good many other fantastic titles, even the obscure like Sky Odyssey. Seems Sony for all the shit they pull did live up to their word of a 10yr life span in the region because if it shits out in 2011 it made that goal.

That's what people say before they end up in Japan shelling out money for crappy pachinko-related goods.
  • I miss my real pachinko machines, I had two over the years. Both were pre-LCD stupidity too.
  • I love my PS2 I bought mine this year and love the games I bought. But in my opinion they should of end it when ps3 came out like microsoft did with there xbox because when ps3 launch it didn't really have any good games because they were still focusing on the ps2 when should of been focusing on the ps3 system.
  • Yeah so, you saying ms owners were better off? Basically damn near literally overnight MS gave the finger to every single Xbox owner dropping 1st party support instantly saying it was time for everyone to move on or move out, and as such third parties dropped it super fast too. Instantly something that was useful and fun was rendered pointless outside of them giving a little xbl support for a little longer on existing items. That was some really cold shit, and it also ruined the value of most the games immensely and the hardware completely. It got so bad lamestop couldn't even move the stuff so they dumped it at like 75% off a bit after the cut off date and now you can find stacks of games nearly at the value of NES commons. That's just not the right way to go about it at all.

I know it cold but it just my opinion after all.
  • Ps2 was pretty solid on the fighting game lineup last gen too...
  • I know it's your opinion, but yeah that was my point too in that what ms did was damn cold. I was actually surprised given how many it did piss off that a good % of them still droned along and bought the 360 as well. I mean had Nintendo pulled that shit on me back say with the NES to the SNES I'd have dropped their ass cold being a kid on a budget.
  • I agree it sucks for us consumers, but from a corporate perspective, it's not smart to be your own competition, if you really want to push the new technology. Kind of what happens to Blu-Ray: DVD releases of new movies are hurting Blu-ray copies, because the latter are way more expensive, and for most movies (at least I) don't care about them being hi-def. I routinely go and pick up DVD copies of movies just for ocasional viewing... but for movies I really care about, I go Blu-ray (needless to say, I don't have that many Blu-rays).
  • Most PS2 games were horrible, but I was quite pleased that PS2 has been a much better system than PS1. Actually leaps and bounds ahead of PS1, which has few worthwhile games (and only one really great game). PS2 has quite a few good games. I still much prefer GameCube to PS2, but it's a system worth owning. If only it were more reliable...although there I guess it also beats PS1, one of the crappiest-built systems out there from any generation.
  • elprincipe, I doubt there's any console of which most games were awesome. Take the NES for example. I have the powerpak with the entire library loaded, and I find more than half are really dull. There are 800+ ROMS in my powerpak (including licensed, nonlicensed, homebrews, protos...), so if 300 are really good games I'd be surprised. Same with PSP for example, I once compared the amount of good games the PSP vs the DS had, and both had a ton of crapware (though the DS had much more), and even though there are much less PSP games than DS ones, their amount of good games are comparable (I used Gamespot grades, comparing their entire database). The PS2 is one of the systems with more games ever, and even if 75% are crap, the other 25% ought to be a lot in absolute numbers.

The problem is not that there aren't good games, it's that you have to dig them up from all the garbage.
  • Actually, I personally respect the fact that Sony's consoles (just like Nintendo's NES and SNES) were still supported for a few years after its successor came out. That is, PS2 came out in 2000, and the PS1 kept going until 2006. The PS3 came out in 2005 and the PS2 is still active today. Just like how when the SNES came out, not only did the NES continue to be supported until 1994, but they even came out with the beloved top loading NES in 1993 as well as the SNES' manual/box encouraging gamers to keep their NES and have both consoles connected to your TV. The same was true for the SNES staying active for about two years after the N64 came out.

I don't know about you, but I think it's quite respectable to keep a new console's predecessor going for a few more years.

PS: I would probably go ahead and get a PS3 if Sony wasn't stupid about watering down the backwards comparability more and more with each new revision (I mainly got the PS2 originally for the backwards PS1 compatibility and its DVD player). image

Right... or perhaps it is considered to be one of the greatest consoles of all time, making nearly everyones top 5.
  • Whats with all the Playstation hate here? The Ps1 was not a crappy system at all and mine still runs as good as it did 10 years ago. Ps1 also has a massive library full of classic games that are still fun to play.
  • I loved the ps1. image

How do you figure that PS2 is leaps and bounds ahead of PS1? PS1 was great for the time, and it has FAR more than a few good games. If you think the PS1 is one of the worst built systems out there, then I'm convinced you've never even played one.
