I disagree.
Wiping off a lens I consider to be common maintenance. Anything that requires dissembling the system (read, changing or repairing a 72-pin connector on a toaster, adjusting potentiometers on an optical based system) goes beyond common maintenance and becomes a repair at which point the system has failed.
Why do you think they placed an adjustment screw there? It is part of the system, it it how it operates. It is not a repair. Nothing broke. There is no tune up screw on an RROD.
I have never owned this system. Until I got my Xbox 360 4 years ago, I had never bought a non-Nintendo system new. I've played some PS2 games over the years, and there's been some good ones, and some bad ones, but honestly, I'm glad it lived this long and had plenty of good games.
I reall dug Killswitch, God Hand, Chaos Legion, and the whole Onimusha series. I think GTA Vice City and San Andreas were the best in the series as well. Metal Gear Solid 3 was one of my personal favorites. Black was a totally underrated FPS that no one ever talks about. What about Twisted Metal Black? It's the best one aside from 2. If you dig shmups, R-Type Final, Sky Gunner, Raiden 3, Gradius V, and Thunderforce IV are all amazing games although Thunderforce goes for crazy cash these days. I totally don't get what you mean by saying it's like looking like a morgue.
Like I said, I try and stay open minded to trying to find and play new stuff that would suit my tastes and it is indeed exciting to see the PS2 have such a long lifespan. The system is technically decent, it's just too many developers took advantage of its namesake in regards to publishing/marketing because of the PS1's success, and Sony had already earned a good reputation, thus why there are alot of tacky games on it. If I was a developer and had a license, for example, I wouldn't mind developing on PS2, regardless.

All systems have that to some extent. Look at the wii? I've never seen as many tacked on bullshit cash ins as I've seen with that system.

It's an absolute cash machine!!! The Wii is just so damn popular with kids/families that if you just toss any kid-popular licensing on a shit game, people will buy.
My feelings towards PS2 fluctuates over time. Xbox and Gamecube no doubt had the best versions of every multiplatform game. Regardless, I like my PS2 mainly for the platformers on it on it such as Ape Escape and Klonoa 2. It doesn't look all that great in terms of resolution, but with S-Video its wonderful and isn't too bad, really. I don't disdain it, but its not without some shortcomings.
PS2 was a great system, I was all Nintendo until that mess of system GC was released. That offically switched me over to Sony and I have now stuck with Sony ever since. Still a fan of N64 and previous but beyond that they lost me. (My opinion don't lose your sh*t)
Stick with a soft modded fatty with a IDE hard drive jacked into the broadband adapter, ya can't go wrong. If it takes a shit on you, go buy another fatty, for next to nuthin, swap the hardware in 3 minutes, and get back to playing. I will always love love my PS2. Great machine. Too many titles, were just awesome for this system.

I have alot of amazing memories with the PS2. it's a wonderful console. Games we're hit and miss. on one hand it had Kingdom Hearts, a horrible mess that destroyed my childhood. On the other hand, it had Final Fantasy X and Metal Gear Solid 3.
I just pieced together a ps2 for less than $7 at random garage sales. I was going to resell it like I do for 99% of things I buy, but I recently got reintroduced to battlefront I and II. I might be keeping this system for awhile. And it's also really nice to play me some old PS games on there as well. I also really like the end of systems - makes collecting more interesting (prices go down for most games, gems start to shine through, reselling becomes ripe for the picking).

I'm usually open to changing my mind on these kinds of subjects.
