Mario Bros. is underrated(?)

I think the original Mario Bros. (both arcade and nes versions) is underrated. This is of course the sewer one. Sure, it may be repetitive but its in the same vein as most early arcade games like Pacman. To put it simply, it's best to just look at that kind of gameplay as being like an endurance test to see how much you can score and how long you can last. Anyway, Super Mario Bros. may have more variation but I have beaten it way too many times and it is too easy even without using the shortcuts. I love it like most do, but I definately think less credit is given to Mario Bros. and these days I spend more time on that one instead.

Who is with me?

  • I'd rather play Joust than Mario Bros. Joust is truly underrated. Joust solves all the problems that you noted about Mario Bros.
  • Can't say that I agree 100% because Super Mario Bros. definitely has more replay value than the original. I do however love playing the Mario Bros. Arcade game with 2 players. When we would get snowed in for a week my cousin and I would play this for hours to see who could score the most points.
  • Mario Bros is not that underrated, but it's also that it's not well known because the first Super Mario Bros. game which my opinion is a very overrated game for NES has overshadowed its prequel, and the fact that game is available in SMB3, and the Super Mario GBA games. I like Mario Bros., but I can think of some better Arcade games that are not as well known as Mario Bros like Mercs, Rainbow Islands, and some of the sega arcade games like Shinobi just to name a few even though they came after the Mario Bros. Arcade game.

Pick yourself up a copy of SMB2j. That should keep you busy for a while.
I agree...Mario Bros. (on the 2600) was a great game...but I too liked joust better.
  • I don't think it's underrated, just overshadowed by what came after it. When you're an arcade game going up against Super Mario Bros 3 or the original SMB, it's not going to be close.
  • I like the super mario bros 3 rendition of the mario bros game better, than the stand-alone NES version.
  • ^ Agreed, the reissues with better play control are far superior. After playing the one in SMB3 (or the ones on the GB reissues - Deluxe and the Advance games) going back to the original feels like you're playing on ice platforms, with mittens on your hands.
  • I do like Mario Bros. a lot, but I have to agree with some of the other posters on here that Joust is a little better. I actually like Balloon Fight better too.
  • Super Mario Bros and Mario Bros are on completely different wavelengths. One is a platformer, predictable and patternlike, with bosses and an ending. Another is an action arcade game, where the only goal is to progress and milk your quarter as long as you could.

Mario Bros. is definitely more challenging because a lot of strategy is involved in the game:

When to collect coins after a enemy was killed or knocked over the edge was pivotal because it determined the release of a potential enemy out of the corresponding pipe. Enemies also could change the environment of the game, by making complete platforms of the playing area freeze, until the next phase which could go on for several boards was reached with a bonus game. More strategy involved the POW block when to use it when to save it. Some enemies required multiple hits and the block was often stored when Slipice showed up in the game. Experienced players knew to not let them cover a platform because in later stages this often meant death or a strategy shift.

I agree this game is like Joust but more foregiving, too many things in Joust wanted to kick your ass, you fly to low your toast, you sit still your toast, you take too long an Albatross comes and whoops dat ass.

So I wouldn't say Mario Bros is under-rated at all, it has it's own set of peeps who are die hard fans and this game is not at all close to resembling Super Mario Bros.
  • I think it's a pretty good game, but there are just alot of other games for the NES that got popular and kinda over-shadowed it.
