Is the Mega Man boss formula supposed to make sense?

This is merely a recreation of a post from other forums, but I felt it would be more well recieved and appropriate for this place instead. What are your thoughts on the Mega Man boss formula? I mean like how Cutman beats Elecman, etc.

Sometimes it seems logical in the rock-paper-scissors sense but other times it doesn't. Bombman vs. Gutsman (dynamite blows up rocks/thick clusters) makes sense for instance, but I'm still trying to figure out things such as Plant Man beats Tomahawk Man or Snakeman beats Gemini Man. I mean, what the hell?

  • Nothing makes sense ever!
  • It only makes sense in the Battle Network world:

    Fire burns Wood

    Wood grounds Elec

    Elec shocks Aqua

    Aqua douses Fire
  • I think some of it is also trying not to make it too obvious. It'd make the games a whole less challenging if it made sense all of the time. I like that you have to sometimes just guess and figure it out. Makes the replay much higher for me.
  • Well, 25% of the time, the Mega Man games base reliably on the elemental structure while 75% is based on randomness for the robot masters. About the only Mega Man game that they rely on the elemental structure only is the very first Mega Man game on the NES. The main reason for the random is so that the game could be fun because if it had to use the elemental structure or the rock/paper/scissor format for the bosses, then the Mega Man games would be repetitive because Capcom would be pointing out the obvious format to destroy to robot masters making the game fairly bland, but not that bad.
  • Funny this topic came up.
I never really used weaknesses, I always went head-on.
Actually, Mega Man 6 is the only one I really used weaknesses on because that was the first one I finally owned so I played the hell out of it and discovered them all myself.

Sunday I was playing Mega Man 2 and I decided to look up the weaknesses.
I was in disbelief! Metal Man creams half of them! And you can kill some robot masters in like 3 hits with weaknesses! If you have their weakness you pretty much win...
Even in Mega Man 6 weaknesses didn't take down that much life.

They really should have a Ninja man and a Pirate Man in Mega Man 11 and settle the debate once and for all.
