LJN's prototypical 'survival horror' games for NES...

I have to say I enjoyed the Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, and to some extent, Jaws for NES. These are good examples of the survival horror genre in its earliest forms (though several others come to mind as well).

Anyway, it was rather uncommon to find those kinds of games back in the day, and they all have their flaws (Jaws being the weakest of the bunch) but these films served as great inspirations to the concept and settings of classic early survival-horror. I think they are often undeservingly panned. Anyone else a fan?

  • Friday the 13th has always been a sleeper hit with my friends and I, and I think if anyone takes the time to figure the game out you realize it's not that bad, especially when you know which routes to take and what characters to use. Hard as balls, balls of steel that is.

As for Nightmare on Elm I'm not down with collecting bones, but I don't own this game so my time playing it is close to nil.
  • the music for nightmare on elm st rules so much, i love it.
  • Samspade in 3....2...1..... haha

I always loved Friday The 13th growing up. That game always scared the hell out of me when Jason would pop out. I loved it.

You know me well. Friday the 13th gets an unfair shake for sure. As far as early elements of survival horror, all you guys should check out Sweet Home. You play it and you just know that this was the total precursor to Resident Evil. Inventory managment not to mention, the actual sense of danger in relation to your characters made for some really intense sequences. Someone in your group dies, you don't get them back and it even has multiple endings based on that which was a major development in RE. There are tons of examples like those and you can tell that Capcom wanted to make something very similar in tone for the 32 bit era.
