Sunset Riders

Anyone here play this? If so, which version?

I play the SNES one. In one of those moods right now where I'll play it nightly, sometimes more than once. I can beat hard mode pretty easily, but Chief Wigwam/Scalpem still poses a sizable challenge.

I like this game a lot. One of the greatest side scrollers I've ever played, to be sure.

How about you guys?

  • the snes version is one of my fav games of all time the difficulty is very tough at parts iv made it (co op) to charles rose a few times (the last boss) but of course hes in god mode and never dies lol
  • and the voice acting its hilarious
  • There's actually a good trick that helps a lot for Richard. If you stand on the right arm of the left balcony and duck, you can take out all the guards and Richard's balcony with no worries; none of the bullets will hit you. It's the only way I can beat him without getting godstomped.

That being said, I play it and I love it. It's quick and fun to play through when you're bored, and it can be addictive.
  • I only played on Genesis. It really is a great co-op game.

Actually, as far as Genesis goes, I can't think of a better co-op game than Sunset Riders besides Gunstar Heroes.
  • Played the SNES and Genesis versions and both are awesome!
  • BURY ME WITH MY MONEY

Edit: Cormano the Purple Mexican 4 Life.
  • Damn man, I've been trying to get this CIB on SNES for under $70 for the past year. It kills me when I watch Genny auctions go in the $15-$20 range, but I want it on SNES damnit. So no I haven't played it, but it has been on my watch list for awhile.
  • One of my favorite arcade games of all time. Got the Genesis version as soon as it was released. Great game!

That's odd, when I moved here recently my sunset riders box was in the bottom of my closet and I was excited to find it.  It had probably been in that box for about 2 years.  Everybody told me it wa a pretty common game to get CIB.
  • This game is a perfect example of the Konami magic touch.

They took an otherwise boring western theme (note: I say boring in the sense that the suspense/redemption genre does NOT translate well to action arcade games), threw it into a blender with Final Fight and a side-scrolling shmup, and made an out-on-the-limb classic.
  • Very good game. (Let the shameless plug begin)I just happen to have one on ebay right now and it's just sitting at .99!

That's a quote for life. I want it in my own gravestone.

    Mexicans + VG = WIN

  • Such a solid title. I play the SNES version in 2 player. "Please don't shoot my brother. He was only following orders!". "Alright ma'am, we wont shoot him". Despite having shot him a hundred times LOL.
  • One of my favorite Super Nintendo games. Chief Wigwam is ridiculously difficult though, I can hardly ever dodge his projectile attack from above. Is there a strategy for that part?
  • ya jone i got it cib took forever
  • I love this game! When it was in the arcade, me and my buddy would go around and ask people to spare a quarter to keep playing this one ... still figuring out the bosses ... they are a pain in le behind

wigwam is the death of me ...

I find that his knives are a lot easier to avoid when you're in a corner and he's on the opposite side. Then you can just jump over them most of the time. Aside from that, all you can really do is either try to get away or stand in between two knives. Also worth noting is that if you're close enough, with both gun upgrades (at least, with the shotgun users), you can hit him while crouching if he's on the ground.
  • Glad to see so many of you like it. image

I find that if I stay on the right side of the screen, and make sure he stays on the left, it makes things a little easier. Inevitably, he'll make it uncomfortably close to you, of course, but as long as he isn't on top of you, it'll be fine. Your que is when he's crouching, at which point, if you have the Golden Badge power up, just press and hold the fire button and you'll be able to inflict some sizable damage before he flies back up again. Rinse and repeat.

He's possible to beat without the Golden Badge, but it's a lot harder.
  • O ok, thanks Winstead Bros. I haven't played it in many moons but good to know next time I pick it up.

Anyone like Wild Guns? It's another Western Shooter game but done in a 3rd person view with Cowboys and Robots. It's a blast!
  • I've never heard of it, but if it's anything like Sunset Riders, I'd probably give it a shot.

Yes, and Wild Guns makes Sunset Riders look cheap.  That one is even more stupidly hard to acquire as a CIB.

No kidding. Apparently WG goes for about $60 or so now and Sunset Riders (SNES) goes for $20-30. I could have sworn Sunset Riders was more expensive than that..
  • I know I beat the game when I was a kid. Never played the Genesis version...just the arcade and SNES.
  • I love Sunset Riders. I've played the arcade a couple times, but I've played the SNES version quite a bit. Borrowed it from a friend a few times for at least a couple months at a time when I was younger and got seriously good at it. I'm pretty sure I beat hard mode at least once. I still don't own the game and haven't played it in years, so I'm sure I'll be very rusty at it the next time I give it a try image
