Super Mario World

It might shock some people, and probably be missed out in the wake of the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., but November 21, 2010 marks the 20th anniversary of the release of the Super Famicom, along with its flagship title, Super Mario World.  This game served as the main selling point for the system when it was released, and is still regarded as one of the greatest SNES games.  I have written an article about this wonderful game, including a close look at the extensive list of Super Mario World hacks.

  • Nice!

I'm a big Super Mario World fan.

And when I got bored with it, I'd play through with no switches or no power-ups.

I wish I was more adept at Lunar Magic though...
  • Wow, that's awesome and the reminder is appreciated. It is SUCH a good game. It truly ushered in the 16-bit era of remaking all the classics we loved better than ever. Probably my favorite Mario game ever.
  • Cool article! Thanks for the reminder as well. I'll look through the article more closely later. I look forward to reading about the hacks.
  • Great article, very thorough. I personally enjoyed Super Mario World and it is probably my favorite 2d Mario Game, right above SMB3. I was delighted to see the info on hacks too.

    Thanks.
  • seeing some of those screen shots brings me back to being a kid. I played the shit out of that game!
  • Long live the SNES, the runner up to best system of all time.
  • Now that brings me back to 1992 Christmas.

We got an SNES with Street Fighter II, Prince of Persia.

We expected to play Street Fighter II non-stop, but Super Mario World got me hooked far too much and whenever the SNES was free, I would pick it and play. image
  • Very well written article mate, and definitely one of the best games of all time. Certainly my favorite and most played mario game.

That hack stuff sounds very interesting also. Can't believe I never knew about it.
  • Love this game to death, and only recently completed it with the *96 rating. I have never actually attempted to play without the switches though. Interesting.
  • On that note..check GameStop. Scheduled for release in early December, there is a Wii version of Super Mario World coming out to celebrate the anniversary! I put it on my xmax list real quick
