Final Fantasy question...

When I turn on my FF game I have 2 options: Continue & New Game.

I would like to start a new game in the future, but don't want to delete my current one.

Is it possible to have 2 saved games on this cartridge or will the new game over-wright my old one?

Thanks!

  • Only one game save per cart if I remember right.
  • Yeah only one save on FF. Get the Powerpak you can have as many save files as you like.
  • One game only, learned this the hard way, brother learned it the harder way when I was on top of him with my fist in his ribs until I was dragged off. I put 2 or so months into playing that game daily around homework, school, and other stuff. I finished it in the evening and had to hit the hay, wanted to re-do the last bit again the next day to savor the flavor -- came back to the game finding it in the opening town and him being lost saying RPGs suck. I asked if he saved, then he got this nervous look and said yes...I slammed reset and found my game gone and then he was next. Trust me I know for a fact it only saves in one spot, also the reason I've never been able to finish the NES version again, ever since 1990.

It would have been much worse had you been near the end and not finished yet.

  • I came home one day this summer and asked my room mate which file on donkey kong country 3 she was playing in and she says "Hardr" and i'm like "Don't save You beat a level with kiddy, I'll just have to redo a few levels" ( was going for 100% pink flags) i then remembered that i was slightly farther than that. and i'm like wait i was farther than this and she goes "Oh yeah I eraced this file 2 weeks back and made one with the same name".... I'm like did you put it on hardr mode? and she goes "Hardr mode? what is that" She said I saw "Horus, Hardr and Riley, and Riley was your brothers file so i assumed hardr was a file i could erace, I knew nothing about the modes" (Why the hell would she save with the same name as my file is my question)

Luckily i was only on world 2.

Anyway after i was a little mad at her. i left the game for a bit and when i came back 2 days later all 3 files were eraced when no one had played it (one of those SRAM glitches that happens) so i said meh and set off on hardr mode again for 103% 100% pink flags. Will redo my 103% 100% blue flags normal game later. and will also be doing a 103% dont know flags yet hardst mode game at some point.

Ya, no shit! - That's what I thought you were going to say. image

Thanks guys - this is exactly the info I needed.

Anyone have any idea how many hours roughly on AVERAGE of play time is needed to complete Final Fantasy on the NES?  I'm not talking about a speed run by someone who's beaten it 5 times, nor an incredibly slow trek by someone who has no idea what an RPG is. Just something in between.

    Thanks again.

  • id say 15 hours or so? the hardest part is having the patience to build levels. im playing the GBA version and its a million times easier in every way.
  • Del/Contra I kind of agree but as I said I didn't get to experience the ending really so it's an even more cruel of a cock tease. I was 13, it was like bed time I think or dinner, can't remember now which other than the fact that I barely saw the end as I had to speed it along so i was going to come back the next day to see what happened. I never have to date on the NES version. The GBA and PS1 versions I have as it took me that long to tolerate it again, and even then I do with MP's as FF1's magic system is trash and far too little gp/xp per kill. I usually on the NES game can go as far as Elfland or the Vampire/Lich until I stop due to that one incident. image

Edit: Contra well going by the ONE time I played it, if we were to guess it took about 2months or a little less, and figure a couple hours a day probably 5 days a week.  Mind you when I did it I had a Fighter, Thief, White and Black Wiz.  I always bought all the gear the Fighter could upgrade, all of them for that matter.  And I would get all 3 of the spells for each caster too, and I'd stock up to keep a good pile (50+ potions) and a good stock of antidote too seeing the shitty magic system I didn't want to waste my few spells on that in dungeons.  I'm guessing I probably put 60hours on it or so taking my time.
  • To beat FF1 the first time, expect about 30 hours. The max level you can get your characters up to is 35 I believe, though some of the dungeons can get tricky. I think the fastest I beat it was 6 and a half hours on the PS1 remake, and I wouldn't do it again as it becomes a royal pain in the ass (I was only level 16 or 17).
  • I thought the max level was 50?
  • onthe nes i was around 45 or so. but i never maxed it out.

i just beat this on the gba about 30 minutes ago and it took me 13.5 hors. that includes messing around and killin about 5 extra bosses not found in the nes version.
  • yeah, I'd say 30 hours is a good estimate. I think my last run through was in that ballpark.
  • Guess I over-estimated it but hell that was 20 years ago too and I know it wasn't the only game I had been playing at the time. Still I know I had more time than I wanted into it to have it lost less than a day later. image
  • on a side note. Has anybody ever beat the war mech? I know he beat the crap out of me when i was a kid now i can never get him to come up at all.
  • i beat him once. it wiped me out off all my magic for cures and my potions so i lost at tiamat
  • Ok thanks a lot guys, I'll go with 30 hours then as a rough estimate! =-)
  • I kicked his ass the only time I went through FF1 on the NES, never caught it on PSOne or GBA. It's odd...I had the NP guide and I saw what I was up against and hoped to hell it wouldn't happen, and near the stairs out it did. I took a super beating, but I did take it down as I was leveled up high enough to take it, and probably a bit of luck too as it has ugly spells.

I think every kid that was into RPGs in the early '90s went through this. It happened to me on multiple occasions with this game, as well as SNES FFII, FFIII, Secret of Mana, and more. Ugh. Those were painful days, for sure.

Oh  yeah, I gun for him.  The first time, I leveled up specifically to challenge him.  Once I saw it could be done, it was on.  Now, its just part of the experience.  One hell of a fight though.

I tried doing a quick google search and didn't find anything for the max level, but I did see someone say something about their level 47, so you are probably right. Dunno where I got 35 from lol.

Depending on how experienced you are at RPG's, and assuming you were a little kid back then, you probably didn't over estimate image Still sucks with what happened.

I beat him once. I think I only ever fought him a total of 3 or 4 times, and got my ass handed severely each time, though I got lucky once lol. Damn his Nuke spell to hell and back! haha
  • Cool guys, thanks for all the info! I've actually been playing this game VERY slowly over the past 4 or 5 years, LOL! Sometimes I've taken almost year long breaks though. I'm actually kind of stuck at the moment and can't figure out how to progress with the game. My characters are all around level 16 or 17 I think.

But I'm not asking for help....I really want to figure it out on my own without consulting a FAQ or anything. Anyone else experience a similar situation while playing (without spoiling or giving me hints)? I'm just curious to know if anyone else hit a road-block while playing.
  • My suggestion is talk to everyone to find those clues. I could take a guess at where you're at, but I don't wanna spoil it for you. Just talk to everyone in town and be sure you find everyone in town image

Ya, thanks for not giving anything away. I actually thought I had talked with everyone, but perhaps I missed someone. I have talked to one guy who hinted at what I need to do, but I can't figure out where to go to do it. So I'll go back and try to re-talk to everyone and see what I might have missed, lol.

  • dra600n, was the very first I played because those morons at NP mag didn't qualify me for the Dragon Warrior freebie because I already had a running sub going.
  • Hey does anyone here have a FF World Map they would like to sell cheap? I already have a beat up Dungeon map. Condition doesn't matter. Not in a rush as I've got other more urgent gaming to do first. Send me a PM if so! Thanks.
  • And I have a FF question. Why does one of my knights keep getting rocked with magic while my mages and other knight are just fine. I'm in the temple of fiends and magic casters are killing this guy like crazy. Everybody has pro rings. The mages have pro capes. The knight that keeps getting killed has opal armour and shield. And the knight that is fine has Dragon and Aegis armour and shield. Both knights have heal helments. What the hell.

It's really annoying when a group of gas dragons or frost dragons can take this guy out on the first level before we even have a chance to try and run. My group is level 25.
  • Opal Armor & Sheild both reduce damage from lightning attacks
Dragon Armor reduces damage from fire, ice and lightning attacks
Aegis Shield increases protection vs poison and stone
Proring increases protection vs instant death attacks
Ribbon reduces damage from all elements and increases protection vs all 'other' magics (status, time, earth, etc)
Heal Helmets don't add anything besides absorb

So your opal guy has a lot of holes in his magic defense most notably fire and ice. And poison, which the Gas D uses.

Dragon armor guy has no status, time or earth defense but that's not really an issue for the most part.

  • Ohh, ok image I gotta protect him better then. Not sure what armour to do that with. Any suggestions? I'll check gamefaq.
  • You might be out of luck. Unless you have a ribbon kicking around in your inventory.

edit: as a rough estimate, a level 25 Knight with no ribbon or aegis sheild will take on average 140 damage per cast of poison... adds up quick!

  • Having more than 1 fighter/knight in your party is a bad idea. Sure, he can deal a nice amount of damage, but it's expensive, and there's only 1 set of elite armor/weapons in the game for that class (unless you use the masamune, but a white mage/wizard is better for that image )
