Nesruler's Contest Presents: Gradius

Hey everyone!  Nesruler has let me run the contest for this week, so there will be no break after all.  This week's game will be Gradius.  Here are the rules:

  • 1 life only
  • Participation: 20,000

Your user name must be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire screen must be in the picture for the score to be valid.  Good luck everyone and have fun!

  • damn, I'm going out of town this week, and this is a nice game (a pain in the ass though). Good luck!
  • kickass, a Shmup! image
  • Oh this is going to get ugly.

Edit: Gradius is a game that loops once you finish it and lets you add to your score. I just got 533,100 on my first run through the game without dying (Gradius is one of the games I'm best at/I have it memorized) , but I can keep adding to it if you'll allow multiple loops on the same score.

It's up to you; total score or per 1 run through the game.

  • dam, very impressive!

Yes, multiple loops are allowed, as long as it's done with one life.  Very nice score too!
  • Wow I was going to try but not now. image I used to be very good at this game but it was long ago. I still think I can get around without getting laid out earlier on, but doing like 2 loops nope. Very nice score.
  • wow!nice score retro!
  • Thanks guys!

I still want to see all of your scores!
  • well considering I've never beat the game...
  • I have a score to submit right now, but I think I can do a little better. I'll definitely have one posted by this weekend.

The ENTIRE screen must be in the picture for the score to be valid.  - FAIL!
  • Will you accept a score played on a playchoice 10? I can't find my NES cart but I have a PCB board in my arcade for this game. Let me know!

As long as there are no major differences from the NES cart, I have no problem with that.
  • I guess playchoice 10 is alright.
  • RetroSnow: Does it getting harder on second run?

I know Life Force is getting harder every time you loop the game, but don't remember about Gradius.

    Jesus man, calm down.

The only thing I had to use for a camera was my phone, and I had to get closer to it or else you couldn't see the score. I don't know what else you would need in that photo, being that everything is accounted for.

It does. It's not too much worse, it's just that the enemies fire a lot more bullets. The key to multiple loops is always keeping a force field up, and even when you have one, get enough power ups to have the slot ready to put a new one on.

Oddly enough, as much as I know Gradius, I suck at Life Force. I really should sit down and get better at that game.

Good to know. If it was just looping with same difficulty, I would have been for a 'one time through' only score, cause we got to admit something: if you can get loop it once, you can definitely loop it 2 -3 -4 -5 -6 + times without much difficulty, and IT IS BORING!!!!!

Looks like my Life Force skills are helping me out with this game as well. I almost 1-life it at my first attempt, I only died in the last stage. I think we'll get a nice competition out of this contest RetroSnow image

Haha sounds good man! I've always wanted to 9,999,999 the score but never have been patient enough to sit down and keep looping it. You're tempting me!

  • After discussing the matter with nesruler22, we have come to the decision that partial screen shots will no longer be accepted after this week. A full picture of your TV screen or computer monitor with your username in the picture will be the only acceptable means for submitting a score. These rules will be strictly enforced. If anyone has any questions regarding this new rule, please contact nesruler22, guillavoie, or myself via PM.
  • This is the pretty much the only day that I have time to play. If I get a good start early on I hope to post my score later on.
  • so while playing tonight, i beat the first level boss and before proceeding to the first wave of enemies for the next round, i got hit by flying statue heads. they are like heads that shoot the bubbles at you in round 3, but were upright and were only a blue outline. they came fast and i got smashed before i knew what happened. anyone know what this is or how to trigger it?
  • This is news to me Lincoln, and I'd like to know more about it, if someone got an idea.
  • Those heads are a warp if I remember correctly as I used to hit it, can't remember what I did to do it, but you jump up and bypass whatever stage you would next go to for the one after.

Sorry RetroSnow, I failed in giving you some competition on this contest. I kept dying for dumb reasons on my second runimage.
  • 143,300

This is the best I could do, although, I didn't play this game nearly as much as I wanted to this week.  I just got an Intellivision, so I've been playing that a bit image
