Suggestions for getting optimal performance out of a toaster

So Christmas is coming up and I decided to buy a toaster for a friend of
mine, I am packing in a bunch of common games, two pads and a zapper. I
picked up a toaster with a new 72-pin connector, I went in and disabled
the NES 10 chip. Despite having cleaned up the carts with 99% Isopropyl and them working fine on my top loader and retro mini (I didn't feel like digging my toaster out of box in the closet), it's not reading cartridges nearly as well or consistently as I would expect. I'm considering changing out the 72-pin connector despite it apparently having a brand new one. Any other suggestions?

  • When I installed my new 72-pin I also cleaned the motherboard contacts that the pin connector attaches to. I also cleaned all of my games the same way. Brasso (brass polish) works extremely well with cleaning contacts. I never have an issue with any games booting up.

So if you didn't clean the motherboard contacts, I suggest doing that.

    This.

Always make sure you clean the motherboard contacts when you are cleaning/changing a pin connector.

I did a full cleaning of it after removing and reconnecting the 72-pin connector. It's not working any better.

Added in edit: Nothing appears to be wrong with the connector in it that's allegedly new. But I bought another new one just to be sure.

  • I have one replacement connector that will only work in the up position. maybe it's the same thing.

not the case here. It works when down.
  • Then it sounds like you might have gotten this NES with a bad 72 in it. Happens occasionally.

Yeah, I bought a new one to swap out. Hopefully this will solve the problem.

It's percentage of good reads is awful. The connector upon physical inspection looks fine, I didn't notice any bent pins. But it takes 4-5 times to read games that read the first time on my top loader or retromini.

I can't give this to my friend for Christmas in its current state and be like "Here, have fun trying to get Kirby to load and Happy New Year". So at this point I am going to change out the connector once it arrives, if that doesn't solve it any other suggestions. I actually cleaned up the whole board with Isopropyl from a q-tip. Anything else I should try or just wait for the new connector to arrive and see if it resolves the issues?

Well, if you already disabled the lockout chip, I can't really think of anything else you could possibly do.  If the new one doesn't work as well, then it's a board problem.
  • The lockout is already clipped I think you said, and all that does it stop the flashing junk, but if this is just an outright refusal to play nice it's either the pins or something else is dying hard somewhere on that board. I'd leave it be for now so you don't cause any other potential factors.

Yeah, it's generally just a straight white screen. The only thing I've figured out is that once I get a good read if I leave the cart in I can power it off, wait a while and power it back on and it remains a good read. If I push down on a cart and let it spring back up then go back down that causes the white screen again. If the new 72-pin connector doesn't fix it, I may wind up just buying a cheap retrobit clone for her or something instead. Which isn't really what I wanted to do but might be a necessary evil.
  • boil the connector on the stove, then bake it dry. i've had good results. i'll try to dig up the directions.

  • The problem was definitely the 72-pin connector. I got the new one in the mail, installed it and there was a miraculous difference. The store I bought mine from clearly didn't put in a brand new one, or had some terrible off brand in it. I didn't see any bent pins, but the difference was immediately noticeable.
