Epic Mickey (wii) first impressions, opinions, and thoughts

After diving into the game for about an hour or so the Magic Kingdom (loosely base off of) doesn't look same.  So far it's quickly paced and many tutorials explaining the ins and outs by rescuing the Gremlins trapped in cages.  Reminds me a little bit of Da Blob with the use of painting things and the main gremlin figure's grunt noises sound very familiar.  It has a mix of 3d platformer with a few side levels when you find a cartoon reel and jump into it.  It'll turn into a 2d mini snippet from a Mickey cartoon (the first being Mickey and the Beanstalk).  The usual flick on the Wii mote will do a Crash / Mario twirl.  Thinning out the bad guys with your brush while adding color or taking away color using the Thinner.  Can add parts to the level or make them disappear.  Right now I'm making my way through the "It's a Small World" level.  The controls are easy to pick up, but when against the wall the camera doesn't seem to work with you.  There is no voice overs just yet, but subtitles, but a dirty looking animation style when some of the cut scenes come into play.  With Donkey Kong Country Returns I was thinking they might have used voice overs but those are just childish noises, grunt and moans are heard.  I don't know how long Epic Mickey is as I just dove into the game.  I hope it's got some meat in store to make the journey a decent size game 15 hours hopefully for a platformer.  DKC Returns seems like an 5-8 hour game, I breezed through half of it in two days. Got the game early and about three hours in, I'm about 1/10 of the way through 100% completing.  it doesn't give u a percentage but how many hidden items and movie reels you've picked up.

Edit:
9/10 for Mickey. after playing this for a longer period of time, i had to bump it down a bit.

Comments

  • Epic Mickey is cool except the camera, the only thing that sucks...
  • Yeah, I've been tempted to pick this up, but all I've heard is that the camera is pretty bad all the way through. Not sure if it's enough to affect the entire game, but it still makes me hesitant on getting it. The graphics/gameplay look damn good though.
  • Would be interesting to see how often a game is great... except for one flaw, and how often that flaw is a camera issue. Think developers don't regard the camera as a significant enough design obstacle to spend much time on?
  • if u figure out how the camera works u can avoid this. i believe they didn't want to have clipping with the walls. so if your up in the corners or the camera is on the boss i.e. in the beginning and you run down towards some of the barrels that u can spin attack to find hearts (life). you'll see this where it almost seems you are in 1st person w out button the 1 button.

edit: im playing this in the chat, if u want to see how it looks right now.
  • I wanna pick this up, but will probably wait a bit for the price to see a drop.
