What do you consider beating Donkey Kong for the NES?

Well, I know you can't technically "Beat" Donkey Kong because it keeps repeating.

But just humor me please.

I've been game testing some very difficult games for a project and I thought it would be nice to distract myself with a good old-school arcade game, so I popped in Donkey Kong.

What High Score and/or # of Levels or Loops beaten would make you throw this one in the "completed" or "beaten" bin?

Lol, thanks.

  • Flipping the score 999,999
  • I wonder if DK on NES goes to a kill screen eventually like the arcade version. I suck at the NES one. Arcade version seems easier to play to me.
  • I don't think the NES version gets up to a million, I may be wrong but I couldn't play Donkey Kong for over an hour straight without going crazy!
  • i can't get the score to roll over but i usually consider beating my previous score a victory. i find the arcade harder than the nes i'm no good with joysticks.
  • Tying it to a tree and beating it with an aluminum baseball bat.
  • If it's anything like DK3, it will go all the way up to level 99, and once you beat that, it goes back to level 1. Yes, i've done it lol.
  • man how could you stand to play dk 3 that long? i love the other two but i hate 3
  • I was wondering the same question as all of you, and it was the only DK game I had when I was little, so I decided to pop in the Game Genie and keep it going to see.

You will probably still die using the invincibility code with game genie Edd!
  • Start at kill screen

    NNVKOPAE

with 3 stages per level and 255 levels to go through making a total of 765 stages to go through before seeing this screen

but yes to answer the question the kill screen exists in the nes version and also it has its own kill routine so the invincible code wouldn't work on that screen

In layman's terms please. I don't understand what this means. Does this mean the game gets to a point where it is literally impossible to go further? If so, is anyone aware of any known record of someone actually getting this far on the NES version?

    Thanks
  • basically the game level value being set to 255 the maximum it can be before wrapping back around to zero the "bonus" is set at 0000. but seting the level timer makes the level playable.

if someone made it there i dunno

Sorry man, but I'm still not really following you. How do you set the game level value to 255? And what does "game level value" even mean? Are you saying that once someone plays 255 levels (or loops?) deep into Donkey Kong that the score resets to 0?

Sorry, but your comment is a little confusing for someone who is not familiar with such topics. Thanks for helping.

Bah, looks like they really did port the game right from the arcade, lol.

yes exactly your bonus or timer starts out with no time left on the 255th level
so if someone was skilled and crazy enough to play that deep into the game
mario would die imeadiately. because of no time left

Wow, that's crazy! That makes me want to get there, lol.

One last question: How do you know this?

You can always give the code he posted above a try to see the kill screen.

Is this a code for the game genie or built into the game itself?

I don't own a game genie and never will! image
  • The game genie code is just used to access the area in memory where the "last" level is stored so the game starts there instead of level 1

  • Oh my god, NES version is so horrible! I better play 2600 version!
  • I actually wouldnt consider this beaten until you played the game to the end. I dont believe this has been done yet though. The guy holding the world record score on this game didnt play it to the kill screen.

Just curious - where do you go to view these world records?

    Thanks everyone for the info!
