Neo Geo AES find at Goodwill (pics)

Hey everyone. So I was at Goodwill a few days back and stumbled upon a Neo Geo AES console and some games. So I got the system, 2 controllers and 3 CIB games for $22. So I'm really happy. The only annoying thing is the system doesn't have the power cord. But whatever. If anyone knows of a replacement power cord I could use or has one to sell let me know. Thanks!

  • Besides the power adapter being MIA, a pretty nice find regardless!
  • Nice grab!! I'd get an adapter for this there is little reason to believe it wont work.
  • nice score man

i always called it the geo Neo ?
  • Wow.

I always wonder under what circumstances stuff like this gets donated. I mean, this was expensive right from day one, it couldn't have been a mom or dad that actually shelled out for this retail, right?
  • Yeah I'm with you dangevin. Only the rich kids had a Neo Geo. My guess is that the parents bought it retail for their son when it came out. It sat in a box in the attic for years, then the son recently died in a freak skee-ball accident. They decided to take all his shit to the Goodwill.

    Great find dude, I'm jealous.

I know right. I was thinking the exact same thing. It's not like a Sega Genesis or NES where they were produced in huge numbers and are pretty easy to find. This is the first time I've ever seen a Neo Geo and didn't even know what it was until I picked it up. Probably the kid moved out and the parents just went and donated a bunch of stuff, assuming it wasn't worth much. Maybe they thought there is no market for stuff like this anymore with the PS3 and Xbox 360 out so this will make some broke little kid happy.

Yea I probably will. The thing is though I tried testing it out with a 9V DC adapter I found in my house but I got no response from the system at all. And that's only 1 volt off. The adapter fit perfectly so I assumed it would work for sure or at least power it up for a second. So this kinda got me thinking that it could be broken which is why it was donated. If anyone knows of any other adapter working please let me know!

Also the bottom of the system says AC but beneath the power jack it says DC so I was confused of which one to use....
  • I don't know if this is the correct adapter, but it says it is 5v 3A. Hopefully you didn't mess something up!

Shit you're right! I just looked at the bottom again and it says 8w, not 8v. I read that there were two different models, one that uses 8v and one that uses 5v, so carlessly I assumed mine was the 8v. The only postive aspect I can think of is that nothing happended when I turned it on. I would imagine if an adapter was too strong the device would at least turn on for a second before too much power flowed through the circuits and fried them. But I could be wrong. Literally nothing happened at all when I tried turning it on which made me think it was broken all along. Thanks for the heads up though.
  • I hate external power adapters! This is what keeps me from trying to find an adapter for my 7800. I bought a console untested w/o an adapter, but no way to check it without buying a 20 dollar adapter
  • ^ Exactly. It's so annoying. Thanks for the link, I may buy that one. The only thing is the guy is charging $10 for shipping and I bet if I return it he will deduct that from the cost. Add to the fact that I have to pay to ship it back. So I'd probably lose around $15 dollars if it didn't work out. But we'll see....
  • Congrats on the most insane Goodwill find I've ever heard of. WOW
  • Yea this is probably one of the neatest things I've ever seen come from a Goodwill, I'm stunned it didn't end up on Shopgoodwill.com
  • Noob question How much is a lot like this worth?
  • Currently closes to finish (1day out) on ebay lists at $152.50 with the same parts, except the power plug isn't missing and has an a/v cable not an RF. If that's normal, as cheap as he got it, if it is fried, parting the pieces out to people who do repairs would make sure there's no loss involved.
  • That is a pretty badass pick-up, for sure. Just buy a $30-40 adapter off eBay and test it out. Worst case senario you can resell the adapter for the same price, Fatal Fury for $40, Magician Lord for $30, Baseball 2020 for $50 and each controller for $40. Even if it doesn't work, I can't imagine it being a hard fix.

btw...the system retailed for $650 and I'm betting that the GW employees had simply never heard of it before, likely the reason it didn't end up on ShopGoodWill.

  • What an awesome find Dino! Finding an AES in the wild is just crazy, Magician Lord was a good time back in the day at the arcades.
  • I know nothing about Neo Geo but it sounds like from everyone responses that this was a really good find. I haven't even looked up anything on eBay really to determine it's value. But anyways, I'll stop sulking like a little bitch because I potentially fried it and don't have an adapter and get excited! Because honestly I've always wanted an AES even though they're more mysterious than the clitoris to me. BTW Joey, I've never played Magician Lord but I watched a few videos of it and it looks awesome. A good 2D platformer is exactly the kind of game I want to play on it. Thanks guys I'll stop crying now and get excited with what I found!
  • haha, epic find in my book, ill give you double and promise to never ever sell. Love Neo Geo, owned 2 MVS arcade units cause they are cheaper than AES. lucky!!
  • Jaguar AC adaptors are the same as Neo ones. Great pickup man! Those are 3 of the earliest games on the unit so I assume someone bought one at launch with a few games then never touched it again. Either way Neo is one of the most awesome systems ever made however if you want any of the gems on the home console I hope you have a bottomless wallet.
  • Dude you gotta just pony up and buy the adapter. Like Moe said, that stuff is an easy sale even without the console, and surely you can turn around and sell the adapter to recoup most of your investment in it.

    Either way, amazing find!
  • great score, makes me want to get out there and look for treasures.
  • Look the way I see this. If I ever found some goodwill moron, or any idiot person/shop put out a NeoGeo at that price with at least say 1-2 games, I'd break my golden rule of never buy hardware I can't test first. You got it so freaking cheap even my poor budgeted tight ass would have jumped instantly on it and sunk in on a legit 1st party power cord and a/v cables on ebay or wherever. That was a super wise buy because even broken, the games can be sold for a good bit of cash, the plugs you buy can be resold to break even or near enough, and the hardware could be parted out for repair pieces and accessories.
  • Goodwill always misplaces power cords, go back and look around. I always seem to find Goodwill's who sell a system with no hook-ups and after walking around I manage to piece the system together.

^Yeah I know. I looked for like an hour though and it wasn't there. The only game that was with the system was Super Baseball but thank God I had the instinct to look around, cause the other two were mixed in with the VHS's. After I left I was thinking, what if Metal Slug was there somewhere!?!?
  • Sick find! Awesome sir!Amazing that was at goodwill! Now someone needs to find a stadium events at goodwill!
  • ^^ I don't think you have to worry about that. Metal Slug came out in 1996, a full 5 years after those games you got. By then, the majority of original owners were over their Neo-Geos and boxed them up. Considering where this ended up, I'm assuming that's what happened here.

Very nice find...however, this isn't necessarily true. I won mine at a local auction and it was complete and nice but did not work. image  It did have 2 controllers and 7 CIB games for $5. I know 100% I would still have it today if it worked.
  • ^^ Wow 5 years? That makes sense then. So I probably intercepted it from someone who bought the system when it first came out which would explain the launch/early titles. I looked for a good hour in every section of the store and the games are HUGE so I'm sure I would have noticed if there were any more.
