Goodwill has finally come through for me!

I stopped in a local Goodwill today on a whim, not really expecting anything at all because I have never even seen a single NES game in there. What to my wondering eyes did appear, but a CIB Race America for $10. It's not the most amazing deal ever, but it's the best I've had at a Goodwill! I do need a new manual for it though. This one is missing the cover.

  • Nice score! But the real question I have is why the heck would they charge a whopping $10 for a NES game!
  • Great stuff, games really never show up too often but they do come through. A month ago I scored some great PS1 stuff though, and then in the past week I got CIB kids games - Jet Force Gemini, Pokemon Puzzle League, Pokemon Snap (all $5 games that I got for $1.97) and CIB Hey You Pikachu big-box with microphone and crap, same price (worth a bit more).

So it pays to haunt'em, people really do "throw away" this stuff image
  • Congrats. Unfortunately the only thing I ever find at the Goodwills in my area (we have 3) are NASCAR and Wrestling games. Yee Haw!!
  • Nice! I need to hit up a few more of these soon. I never find much but i'm not giving up. image
  • The Goodwill here in Cleveland seldom has *anything* game-related...even sports games are difficult to come by here. Though I did score something interesting in Hixson one day...a boxed Le Game system (it's an ancient tabletop system that reads penciled-in squares to program it to play games) with a few (I think it's like 4?) games and manuals for $2.50. I've found absolutely *ZERO* information about the system (online or elsewhere: even Digital Press doesn't have this one cataloged) since then, as well...

  • I always wondered why my Goodwill never had anything NES.  Well, recently my girlfriend came home from there, and told me she almost got in a fight!  She said these 2 boys walked in, went to the counter, and the guy behind the counter gave them a CIB NES system and a bunch of games.  She asked him why they were behind the counter, and he told her that he holds everything NES for his 2 friends.  She wwas so pissed!  Anyways, she had a very long story about the argument they had, it involved a BIG Black girl, that was on my girlfreinds side of the argument, but I just don't feel like typiing it all out!
Long story short, it pays to have connections at the Gooodwill!
  • That was a similar situation with one near me...for a long time the manager that worked there and another kid there split up any games that came in.

  • That pretty much goes for anything of value thats donated to Goodwill. The guy that works in the donation trailer usally gets to look thru stuff first then the people who sort it , then the floor employees. so highly doubt anything of value ever makes it to the floor unless the employees have no clue. But that said as long as they pay for the stuff It would be alright perk of working there but if they just take the stuff thats wrong.
  • I know a lot of times now because of the shopgoodwill.com auction site, a lot of the Goodwill's NES stuff gets put on there before it even goes to the store sadly. image

At my local Goodwill, there is a big sight stating that in the interest of fairness, employees are not allowed to purchase items or to put them back for others. As for whether or not they follow that, I don't know. I have found some decent things there before. I picked up a dozen loose NES carts for $2 each, but there was nothing too rare in there. I have had better luck with Genesis carts, though. I did find a Game Boy Color, Games Boy Advance, cases for each and a few games for like, $15. They currently have a few Arcadia 2000 games in stock for $5 each. They had 10 of them, but are down to 3 or 4.

My best deal would be the C64 cart that I had bought there, Sammy Lightfoot. I only bought it because I felt bad after the woman working there dragged all of the C64 carts out so that I could look through them. I just picked that one out because the box looked neat. I paid $2 for it and turned around and sold it to a guy in Canada for $50.

  • I went to two goodwills today and both didn't interest me much.  One had thier entire electronics section cleared out because of Christmas and the only games left were GBA Capcom Collection for 6$ and NBA 2006 for Xbox for 10$.  The other place had a bunch of sega megadrive games for 3$ each, but that was about it.

thats what I was thinking too. usually $5 at the most
  • I've actually had alot of luck at my local good will store, and one located in clinton CT. In total, I have found,

    - Mint CIB Super Nintendo only $7

    - Mint Cib barker bill's trick shooting - $0.99
    -Mint Cib Castlequest  - $0.99
    -bubble bobble cart $0.99
    -pacman cart same price
    -Cib Boulder dash same price
    mike tyson's punchout, ...
    An NES $5

that was all found last year
However, lately I havn't found anything except a Mint Mario teaches typing PC
  • I don't know if anyone's ever noticed, but the Seattle Goodwill sells games on ebay all the time, and they have the best lots (usually 10-30 games) on ebay most of the time. I was actually thinking about going up to Seattle to scout the Goodwills myself, but I figure the games never get put out in the first place.
  • Actually my best single-item find ever wasn't even gaming related. I always browse to see if there's anything that slips by like silver or obviously antiquey things. I'm no flea-market-guru but some things just grab you.

I wound up getting a big Cutco chopping block. Unfortunately, no knives...they're worth big money (even a small paring knife is like $50) but the block alone netted me $75 last year. Cost me $3.97 image

I _did_ get more overall in terms of the PS1 games I found last month but that was about 15 separate items. From memory: Diablo, Tomb Raider Chronicles, all Resident Evil 2,3,Survivor and Director's Cut, South Park Rally, Parasite Eve 1 & 2... some good solid stuff.

Yup, I always check out their video game auctions.  They always have some good deals.

  • Goodwills here don't even have game sections :( Sometimes they have a VHS or DVD section and once in a blue moon they will have a loose cart for Genesis or Atari. I never find NES though.

  • That's the same thing here Jason. They just have a few glass cases at the front of the store where they put things they think might be valuable. All video games go in here and this is the first time I've seen an NES game in there.

I check the glass cases at 3-4 goodwills in the area, and usually skim the dvd/vhs section, in the last year I've found one CIB (Arch Rivals) and maybe 3-5 cart onlies that were deals at $3.

I did find a neat VHS Strategy Guide that is partially dedicated to FF7, not worth much by itself but if I ever need to unload my FF7 it will bundle nicely image
  • Strange, i normally always find "something game related" at my goodwills almost everytime i go. Which is about once a month. Last week i was there and snagged>>

    Splatterhouse 3 Genesis $1.00

Genesis 3 Mini System hoookups controllers, cords, $10.00

    Duck Tales 2 Gameboy $1.00

    Battletoads Gameboy $1.00

    Pokemon Gameboy $1.00

Like 3 or 4 other Genesis Games.

I also passed on a N64 System with 2 controllers (1 being the gold controller) for $10.00 and another Genesis System for $10.00. Plus they had a bunch of other common games.

I believe it mostly has to do with your area and what kind of people hunt for stuff around your area.

I never realize that Cutco was worth anything. My parents have a set with 2 wall racks that they have had for at least 40 years. That says something about their quality. JY
  • Jimmy, my wife says to let you know - no matter how old the purchase, Cutco stands by their lifetime warranty on the edges, and they'll sharpen and resend them for free. If your parents go to the website and print out a form, all they need to do is pay for Parcel Post to the company and they'll get the equivalent of brand new knives to replace them in a couple weeks.

My wife used to be a regional manager back when she was 20 :)
