Playstation Suite for Android phones, and PSP2 confirmed

SO the PSP2 was revealed this morning. It has some amazing hardware.

imageThe console will do gaming over a 3g or Wifi connection, and focus on social connectivity (boosted by a front and a rear mounted camera). It will have a front touch screen (5-inch OLED display with 960 x 544 resolution) as well as a touch sensitive panel mounted on the back. It has two analog sticks, and is motion sensitive like the six axis. It will feature games on a cartridge similar to the DS. It will also be able to play games from Sony's new Playstation Suite. The Playstation Suite is a game store that will allow you to purchase Playstation games and play them on Android phones and tablets. A Playstation Phone AKA Xperia Play has been leaked for a while now. The phone uses Android and features full Playstation controls to take advantage of the Playstation Suite. Non Playstation phones can use touch screen emulated buttons.

  • That looks very nice and slick. Too bad the hole it's going to punch in your pocket will never look the same again.
  • Bye bye UMD image
  • Wow, I'm shocked that they actually went with the 4-core chip.

Goodbye battery life! Hello "Game Gear 2" image
  • Looks pimp. Too bad I don't ride public transportation anymore - my portable gaming days are over! D:
  • Of course this is announced a month after I get an Xperia X10. . .

I'm not much of a handheld player, and even less so a PSP enthusiast, but the phone looks like it could actually be a lot of fun.
  • I was really hoping for 4 shoulder buttons. (L2 & R2)
  • Yay for physical media! I'm saved for at least 1 more generation!

Does it really need the 2 cameras?  Does anyone over the age of 12 actually use the cameras on the Dsi?

I don't mean that as an insult, and if you do, that's fine - I just really don't see the point myself.  Like with the Dsi - it's not like I go around taking pictures with my awesome 0.3 megapixel camera and upload them on the internet...
  • I'd bet they're not those crap cameras though, the DSi cameras are a joke! Seems interesting, we'll see what it can do soon I hope.
  • Any price estimate on either product yet?
  • You know with a 4core setup, visuals on the level of ps3 (3ds is level of 360 so nearly equal), a back side touch panel to interact with the front, memory cards (sorta like DS wow Sony learned something!), and all the rest you got to worry. If the 3DS can do all it can in a $250 range, and you got a Sony with a larger single OLED(more pricey than LCD), dual touch panels, 4core chipset, memory card reader, motion, front/back camera, and the rest....it proves something.

Sony never learned a damn thing from the PS3 and PSP launches. The hardware here they'll likely have to sell for $400-500 at launch, if they go down to $300 to try and compete against the 3DS they'll be losing hundreds on the unit much like the PSP/PS3 debacle. They'll be second to launch, while PSP as a brand is known, it's known both as an expensive device with shorter battery but also as the machine piracy raped and ran off developers. It'll be hard to get them all back on with how far over the edge (for them) Nintendo went with the 3DS and they'll have a jump on em at a cheaper price with BC with the DS and DSiware stuff. Don't get me wrong, not fanboying, I'll likely get a PSP2 after it's as cheap as a 3DS just as when I held out on PSP until it was in those $200 bundles late in the '2000' lines life.

Unfortunately this is the quote I read on Engadget from Sony "I think if the quality's there, then the people will find a way to buy it, within reason... I think that if you could create content that consumers sees compelling, they'll find money that they didn't think they had."

And Tanooki, I don't think piracy raped the PSP any more than it did the DS. The DS was easier to hack, and cheaper. For $10 shipped you could get a micro SD and a flash cart. Then you didn't have to do anything just put the games on it and play. The PSP required large and expensive Sony memory sticks, and you had to feel comfortable with and have the capacity to (not that it is probably very hard for most of us here) to read up on your system, and hack it. Sony already has the major companies on board (Capcom, Konomi, ETC), and they were showing their games today.

When i ride the bus, I play my DMG-01
  • Looks sweet! But it's something I won't get as I'm not really a portable player.
  • Look nice. So it won't play UMD. Well that kinda sucks.
  • About time some quality games are coming for the Android system. Until now the iPhone has been miles ahead
  • Sorry for digging up a dead thread, but does anybody have the Xperia Play?

I don't own it but we carry it at work and I've played with it.  You have a question about it?

ARM does really good work, and their multi-cores are usually amazing low power drain.  I think this one is pretty new so I don't know about it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's on par with older single core ARMs.  They are always working on improving their power usage.

If this were an intel 4 core chip, youd have like 10 minutes of batery life but ARM could pull it off just fine I think

Edit: lol, didn't realize this is from January
