They work lovely, I was lucky enough to get one for free.

  • Went to a yard sale once and asked the guy if he had any old video games. He goes into his garage and pulls out a milk crate with a master system, 3D glasses, load of CIB games and we strike up a deal at $30 provided that I'm going to play them not resell. Fantastic deal right? In the crate is a six button laser active controller. He had already sold his "genesis" games a week before.

I was still ecstatic with my score but... damn.
  • Just remembered this and had to share. A few months before I officially started collecting, I was at a city-wide garage sale, kinda like a flea market, and I saw this guy had a small box of games. So I asked how much, he said "$3 for these [genesis and N64 games] because they're smaller, those [NES games] over there are $5 because they're bigger." I only picked up a genesis game or 2 because that's the only system I had at the time. I don't remember what games he had for the Nintendo systems, but I kinda wish I had picked them up at those prices, simply for the fact that he was selling them by size of the cart.
  • Went back to possibly snag that Sony Wega tv...gone....

Seen some nice deluxe sets in this salvation army....
  • Lately, I've been getting backdoored alot on craigslist so I started blindly garage saling more to no avail. Today, I went to a garage sale that was advertised on Craigslist to have a SNES with a bunch of games. They also said "NO EARLY BIRDS" in their post. I got there 30 minutes beforehand to wait in my car and go to the sale when it started at 9am. I go up at 8:55am, knock on the door and ask about the SNES and the lady said "some guy came a little after 8 and bought it all". I was and am still LIVID!!! If you say no early birds, then tell them to wait until the sale starts when they show up!! I try to follow the rules and always get backdoored or beat to it by some early bird scumbag.

I'm starting to think that I have to start early-birding those types of sales to even make it worth it which is infuriating because I did what they said and still lost out on a good purchase. I always show up on time if they say no early birds and I always get punished for it. I'm so torn with what to do now but I might become what I hate to get what I want. Errrrrrrgggghhh

"Early birds" is a meaningless term for most people on CL. It pretty much means "don't bother me before I wake up" if that. Only time I scored anything from yard sales that mention Nintendo, I've had to arrive an hour beforehand while the folks are setting up. I once walked away with 40+ Genesis/NES games for $5 litterly seconds before resellers/collectors started screeching up to the house. Another time, I arrived to a yard sale two hours beforehand because one of the pics had Smash Bros labeled $1 among other games to find a half dozen middle-aged men and nerdy teenagers with their moms already circling the block with their cars, jockeying for position when the yard sale opened. That was definately a "WTF am I doing with my time?" moment for me.

Unless the yard sale is within a five minute drive of my house, I don't bother going out of my way to yard sales that mention video games anymore. More often than not:

    1. Someone emailed/called the organizer and bought all the games days beforehand.

    2. Someone arrives at the buttcrack of dawn and buys all the games.

    3. The ad is troll made fake.

I've had better luck hunting through yard sales with no/generic descriptions and I don't have to lose half a night's sleep for a chance to get the games.

  • Came home for lunch and saw my next door neighbor had a sale going on. Tons of sports and kids games. She told me someone came by an hour earlier and walked away with a Nes in box, plus 40 Nes, N64, Gamecube games. Mostly Mario titles for $100....NEXT DOOR...
  • Man, to lose out on something right next door, ouch. Guess I'm going to have to start telling my neighbors about collecting.

Well I had my own experience this morning. I went to an advertised CL sale with "vintage Nintendo and games" and found out that someone called ahead yesterday and bought everything. Called? I don't remember there being a phone number on the ad. So I went back and checked and when you click the "Contact" button yep there was a phone number. I had sent them an email yesterday and I looked right past the phone number ... oops!
  • I was on a hot streak this morning. First three yard sales on my to-hit list all had a bunch of awesome stuff. Then as I was driving to the next yard sale, a commercial truck decided to jump across two lanes of traffic and nailed my front bumper. After exchanging info, I had enough and called it a day at 8:30am. The damage isn't too bad, but it definately killed the buzz of today's finds.
  • Then you and they guy that did bid on it would have gotten into a bidding war and it would have gone for much more. It's hard to play the "if only..." game with ebay auctions.

    What if he sniped it?
  • Then it goes for thr guys opening bid which is still probably more than 99 cents?
  • Two of my honey pots are closed/closing down. The first is a small junk removal company I discovered last year in a nearby town that would occasionally yard sale the crap they removed. These guys were awesome because:

    1. They hardly advertised on CL so no one knew about them.

    2. They were located deep inside an industrial park off an empty road so they had minimal foot traffic.

    3. They flat priced all their video games at $4

I grabbed some nice finds from that business. Sadly, it looks like they didn't survive the winter.

Other honey pot is a local Salvation Army store that is shutting down. Some of my best thrift store finds came out of that store. Plus they would sell weird stuff that other stores like Savers wouldn't bother with.
  • I guess this counts as losers weepers...or maybe craigslist stupidity? Guy emails me Saying he has boxed of vintage computer stuff (commodore, amiga, etc) a bunch of games and stuff too. He says he is throwing it all in the garbage and wants to know if I want it. So I wrote him back and said yeah I'll take it if you're gonna throw it away anyway. He writes back again and says no, I thought you would make an offer, I'm not giving it away. If you dont offer anything then I'm just going to throw it away.

WTF?! So the options are pay for it or I'll throw it away? Why not just let me come pick it up then?! Why don't i just hide outside your house amd go thru your garbage then? What the hell?

That's pretty hilarious.  You would think the guy just wouldn't mention he would be throwing it away.  Even if you were going to make an offer, he takes away any kind of bargaining power he had.

  • I have a want Ad on my local Craigslist. I've had numerous people respond, and so far everything has been a total waste of time. This was my favorite one, however:

    Person - i have an n64 w 7 games$40

Me - OK, cool. I'm definitely interested! Could you let me know what the games are? Thanks.

Person - donkey kong 007 scooby doo hybrid heaven perfect dark monster truck mario kart

Me - OK, great! Definitely interested in purchasing that for $40. Are there any controllers/wires with it? Just let me know when you'd like to meet!

    Person - no ty

Me - No thank you meaning, no controllers & wires? Or no thank you meaning... you are not selling it?

    Person - not selling it?

Me - Still kind of confused by your response. If you're interested in selling, let me know when and where you want to meet. If not, just respond with: No longer interested in selling. Just confused why you would message me on your own accord, then rescind your offer 20 minutes later?

Person - no longer interested in selling

I really don't understand Craigslist most of the time. I'm sure collectively it's comprised of the most unintelligent people on Earth. Most can't even form a complete sentence, and if they do it's ridden with typos. Then the motives/back outs are a whole different story.

Same here, I have yet to have an actual deal go through on my want ad.  The one that pissed me off the most was this lady selling an old PS1, so I said I wasn't interested, but if she had anything else let me know.  She replies that she has Tetris and Mario on the old NES.  Didn't sound too great of a deal, but I figured I would take a shot in the dark and I asked her if the Tetris cart was black or gray.  She responded that it was black!  So I get all excited and tell her that I would definitely be interested in buying, and I ask for a picture just to make sure.  No response back.  So a couple days later I ask if she's still selling it.  Again, no response.  It has been about a month now since I've heard from her.  I'm still holding out hope that she still has it and will eventually sell it to me (she was pretty slow in responding to my first few emails).  However, as each week passes, that hope just grows smaller and smaller.

You definitely won't hear back. That's just the Craigslist way. Had the same thing happen to me recently w/ a Gamecube lot haha.

Yeah sounds like asking about it being a black cart tipped her off. She then went on eBay and decided not to meet with you at all. Not much you could do though, can't blame you for seeing if it was worth your time.

Yeah, that's what I figured.  But there's just that small part of me that wants to believe.  Crazier things have happened :-)

  • Lost out on a SNES Harvest Moon at a value village.

Another local collector had them put it on hold for him(they will hold an item for 1 hour), he walked in to pick it up not long after i had made it to the store. What makes it worse is that i was free to head out to value village at least 2 hours earlier. Had i just left immediately, and not spent time playing mario kart, i would've gotten it. And i didn't even win in mario kart..

    cue sad music

yeah but how much was it?

  • Ha, instead of prematurely posting this in Finder's Keepers, I figured I would just pre-empt the deal falling through. So anyway, I am waiting to hear back from a guy on Craigslist about a deal on N64 games for $20. Probably not gonna happen.

Donkey Kong, Star Wars Shadows of the Empire, Pokemon Stadium, Starfox, Mario Kart, Banjo-Kazooie, Yoshi's Story
  • There's no chivalry on The List.
  • I found a Game Boy Player start-up disc for $3 at a garage sale. I thought about buying it in case I ever found a GameCube, but passed. I didn't know much about GameCube (I had never owned one before) so I didn't know how uncommon they are. Of course, I found out a few hours after their sale was over. Two weeks later, the same family was having another sale. I went there about an hour after it opened... and the disc was gone.
  • you poor, unfortunate soul...
  • Uh, I didn't realize how uncommon it was either... There's one sitting in a pawn shop downtown for months now and it looks mint ... I gotta go.

Same with me. I got I think 2 actual completed transactions via my want ad last year. 99% of the time I either get no response after I tell them what I'll pay, or I get "they are worth more than that". I guess they think I'm ebay and I'm going to give them the same price as a BIN that they randomly saw. Either that or I get responses from towns that are like 5 hours away and it wouldn't even be worth it to drive there.

Oh and I ended up getting the Commodore stuff, which the story became even funnier. First it was "I'm throwing it away, do you want it", then "well I am not just giving it to you, either offer something or I will throw it away because you live about an hour away and I don't want to drive all the way up there for nothing". So I said okay, $20. He accepts and says for me to meet him an hour away where HE lives! I'm like, wait a minute....I thought the whole reason of me PAYING you was to make it worth it to you to drive up here? So now I am paying AND driving to you?! How the hell did that happen? Well then it gets even dumber....he says he is coming to my area for a meeting, literally 2 minutes away from my work...so he STILL could have just stopped by and gave me the shit for free. Whatever, I didn't care to pay the $20 anyway. He had a TON of shit, and it really made no sense why he had any of this; 5 C64c units, 4 disk drives, 2 of the white disk drives, a monitior that won't turn off, a Vic-20 in the box, and the "huge box of games" was nothing more than like 50 unopened packs of blank floppies! The thing that pissed me off was he said he had a Commodore 128, which I have wanted for a while, but it was nowhere to be found. I think he thought the 64c was a 128 (they look similar). I thought, oh well, I really wanted a VIC-20 anyway....well here is the next fun part; EVERY single unit from him was PAL and has a European power adapter that I can even use! WHY the hell did he have all this stuff? Oh and another thing, almost all of this stuff was still in its original package from when he bought it on ebay....he literally bought all this stuff on ebay and NEVER opened any of it, but for some reason he bought multiples of the same exact thing. The packages were from all over the world, like Germany and Australia. So now I am stuck with a metric ton of PAL commodore units that I can't even plug in and use!
