Decisions, decisions

I have a functional toaster, but unfortunately due to its size and quite frankly the inconvenience of size and other factors I don't like using it.

I own two top loaders, and a few famiclones, but none of my famiclones take actual NES controllers. I'm considering doing one of two things. Option #1 is to buy a cheap retrobit famiclone that takes NES controllers. Option #2 is to find someone to AV mod the top loader. Any suggestions considering the circumstances?

  • I highly recommend the RetroN 3 system. Plays NES/SNES/Genesis, and takes original controllers for all 3. Has the same limitations as every other clone out there, but I love the thing.

Size and space is an issue. How big is it?
  • Don't screw with a toploader unless you absolutely have to. They're great to own and have solid resale value in a pinch. I'd go for the famiclone and preserve your toploader.
  • About the same size as a regular Super Nintendo deck, just estimating

The reason this is coming up is setting up RF on some TVs is a pain, and the video quality on the top loader does bother me.

  • I would personally recommend AV modding a toploader.

It's a beautiful picture once done, and you can play all your games, and if you ever get a Powerpak it will work on a toploader.

Only one clone and only certain revisions of it work with the Powerpak. Just a thought.

This brings me to the next question if I choose to go in that direction, who can AV mod it (I suck at sodering). Where to find someone who would do the mod, or should I see if I can find a pre-av modded one.
  • AV mod top-loader, no doubt about it.
  • Dan, have you seen my comparison photos of the AV mod versus reg toploader?

    Nope
  • Yea you have to get it modded. Looks great.

I was waiting for you to chime in.  I should be your spokesman!
  • What's a mod of a top loader cost anyway?

That I can't answer sorry.  Depends on who you find willing to go it, how much the materials cost them, and how much their time is worth to them I suppose.
  • Yea...clones suck! might as well just use an emulator then!

And the mod will add significant value to the toploader, where as a clone has like no resale value...
  • Hmm yeah I guess it would come down to the modders personal stake in profit vs cost of parts. Like if I had it done, I'd want it done up like the original Nintendo job was with the classic a/v jack not just some bored into the plastic and wired in rca ports.
  • I would never mod a toploader. Mind you, it's because I'd never actually play a toploader, but that's another story entirely. Now I'm off to play me some Uncharted Waters on my toaster image
  • AV modded toploader for sure. That's what I play my NES games on about 98% of the time. My toaster is in my bedroom and I never even play it there. The modded toploader looks fantastic on my 32 inch Trinitron.
  • I'd heavily consider it just because it is my choice of NES. My old one from back in the day is downstairs on the main tv and I really don't use it, same with the 1991 SNES too. It's a bitch as new tvs don't have dedicated A/V ports anymore, but it does piggyback the r/g/b setup and I had pulling cords. image (That and I do prefer the feel of the top loader and consistency of it.) I hate the bars, but I've gotten used to them unfortunately.
  • ive seen 3 or 4 different ways to mod a toploader with A/V and im not sure what one would be the one to use.

i already built the one on GamesX, minus hooking the RF back up. and i could not get it to work on my frontloader.

i even did a one up on their instructions and i hooked my composite straight up to the ppu. it works fine, without the resistors/transistor, except its too dark just like they said it would be.id like some advice on what the best one would be, and id also like to be able to hook it up in my toaster first.

I dont care if something goes awry in the toaster.

Besides Nostalgia i only see 2 mabeye 3 reasons to want a toaster and its not the Zif socket.

#1 some way to hook it up besides RF.

    #2 Price

    #3 Retrousb

sofar the best topload mod that i have seen, is taking the rgb ppu out of a playchoice 10 and using that in the toploader. I would guess you could also use one from an AV famicom. but does anyone have a better solution than taking it from one of those two?
  • Those famiclones aren't worth the time of day, skip those. Just get an AV modded toploader.
  • Only thing I hate about the Top Loader is, even when modded with composite, it will show jail bars. Even with the best AV mod, they are still there.

The only ones that are jail bar free are AV famicom and Famicom Titler. NES 001 Toaster doesn't show them nearly as much as original Famicom, Sharp Twin Famicom, and Top ader. Our Top Loader design copied the original famicom, so that is why it has the same problems.

AV famicom also supports regular NES controllers. Only thing that sucks is you lose light gun support, which can be fixed via modding or buying the overly expensive, but awesome looking revolver light gun.

Also keep in mind, the intensity of the jail bars depends greatly on your display. Commodore monitors do not display it, as well as really old TVs. Do you see them now with RF?

If the AV mod is done correctly there will not be jail bars.

If the AV mod includes a rebuilt video circuit the jailbars are eliminated.  I've got pics posted in another thread showing the difference in the jairbars between toploader and one with rebuilt video circuit and AV jacks.

I looked over the thread you posted on, and wow, those jail bars are bad. The jail bars im talking about are not the ones you experience, but ones you see with certain palette colors. The best way to see them is in Super Mario Bros. level 1 or Excitebike.
Both these have very bright colors in the background, blue and green
respectfully. Other than those bright palettes, it is impossible to see the jail bars.

I am not saying Top Loader with av mod won't look good, just saying at best, it will look on par with the NES 001. NES 001 has jail bars as well, just not anywhere near as severe as Top Loader/Famicom. They are hard to tell depending on your monitor, and non-existent on commodore type monitors.

Also all RGB mods i've seen done on anything other than AV famicom have jail bars.
  • Then the mods are of very poor quality. See:

  • Wow...somebody either loves hot glue, or is afraid of solder
  • Chu Chu, PM me a list of games to play on my av modded toploader, and I'll take some pics for ya.

I can take comparision pics of a toaster also, if you want.
