I've played through over a third of this game and I was quite impressed with it. I am not really into RPGs, but this one kept me coming back. Unfortunately, I moved away and when I boxed everything up, I never unpacked it to start up playing again. I haven't tried DW 2, 3, or 4, despite owning the whole set.
Let's talk about Dragon Warrior and not how big our e-dicks are.
Do I sense some e-penis envy?! *whips out a ruler* Damn, never mind :' (
Dragon Warrior is friggin' sweet. I still throw it in just to play it. It's one of those "once a year" things. I usually don't go through the whole thing, but I sit there and indulge in PBR until ~level 10, save, and turn it off. Love the simple tunes, too. Good fun to be had. Love it you must.
Personally I love this game. Did anyone else get it when Nintendo offered it with a Nintendo Power subscription? I've had a subscription ever since. If memory serves the game also came with a walk through book, a level card, and a few posters. I've been able to keep most all that stuff over the years. IMO it still holds up over time. The Gameboy Color remake was equally as enjoyable in 2000.
I honestly don't remember when I got it. I think for Christmas maybe. All I remember is my friend and I playing it for awhile and beating it on a rainy day using the guides. I think that might have been one of the first games I legitimately beat.
I got my copy on a bet. I was told by my best friend (still is) back in 10th grade I could have the game if I finished it in one sitting, and while it took around 6 1/2 hours, I still have my trophy.

I am at the point in the game where I just keep trying to go deeper and deeper into Charlock Castle. Last night I managed to have the Dragonlord in sight, but got killed by a red dragon. I learned HEALMORE recently, which helped immensely.
There was only one spot where the game dragged for a bit. I was level 14 or 15. I was too weak to consistently succeed in the more rewarding battles with Demon Knights, Magi/Starwyverns, and Knights. But I was overly powerful against the lower tier enemies like Wraiths, Wyverns and such. I had already ninja'd my way to Cantlin, and I was just trying to save money for the Flame Sword and Silver Shield. After I gained a level and bought the Flame Sword, things went much more smoothly. I was finally able to nab Erdrick's Armor and prepare for my trip to Charlock.
At that point, I was concerned that the experience curve was going to get too big and that I would actually get bored before being strong enough to get through Charlock. Fortunately, it seems the designers made the right decision regarding this. Starting with level 15, and for the next handful of levels, you only need 3000 experience per level. So, even though you are fighting stronger enemies, which give increasing amounts of experience, the experience requirements to gain levels do not increase! This means you actually gain levels more quickly near the end of the game.
I did get a strat guide but I don't remember it looking like this. I'll have to dig mine out. I agree about some of those levels dragging a bit. I give into the temptation to grind early so there's less of a hurdle to overcome later.
That big image I remember in NP mag too, the stuff I remember from DW on the extras had some fold outs, and the cardboard piece with some info/stats/gear on it and the taller travelers book too.
Huge fan of the Dragon Warrior/Quest series. In the last year I replayed through DW1, 2, 3, 5, and 6(didn't really feel like going through DW4 again yet, already beaten it twice). For 5 and 6 I bought repro carts. If you can get through DW2 without using any guides, my hat goes off to you. Getting through the Cave to Rhone at the end is rough to say the least. Then when you get to the other side, you still have to hoof it a ways to the shrine so you can save it(while dodging Blizzards that can kill your whole party with their Defeat spell). I won't lie, I used a guide!
Oh, and to hit on the "non-linear" discussion, there was, if I remember correctly, a nice aspect in DW4 that I thought was great. When you get your boat, you're free to roam around the ocean obviously, and if you can find the right area, there's a town that sells some awesome weapons and armor for your level. Of course you have to have the cash for it, but if you're like me and enjoy hanging in one spot hoarding money to overpower yourself, it's superb. The challenge is being able to get there without getting killed. Anyway, longer post than I anticipated!
i only own dragon warrior 1, and havent had time to beat it... i love rpgs is it worth blowing many countless hours on it (i know i will if i start playing) and is it worth buying the rest of the nes ones? (2 3 and 4?) as i know they are kinda rare and expensive
Worth depends on how far you like to take your 'blowing many countless hours' because Dragon Warrior's are known for having to buy up a good bit of gear, items, and leveling with pretty small sums of cash and xp. If that's what you love, you're set and the pretty nice story and various characters are alright too.

I don't recall the original DW taking nearly as many hours to finish as later RPGs do (Final Fantasy, DW 2 and on, etc). Give it a shot.. The original is a cheap, common game, so you don't have much to lose.
I still remember my teenage years when I would blare the radio while getting experience points. The game was definitely challenging.
I only beat DW1, DW3, and DW4 recently since some idiot sent me a defected DW2 cart... (however, I do think I beat DW2 back in the day, but I can't remember)
After hitting level 20, I headed for the Dragonlord. It took me a few tries before I realized that simply attacking him directly over and over was the path to victory.
It's strange that I played through this many times back in 1989/90 but barely remembered any details. The only things I remembered going into this playthrough:
1) Green Dragon guarding Gwaelin
2) Something buried in a swamp somewhere
3) Wyverns were the best monsters to fight for exp/gold.
That's pretty much it.
Well, now I am ready to start "Part 2", as the title screen says.
Just put mine in, since I haven't played it since Funpsot XII's Tournament last June....was up to lvl 11, so just time to level up a bit and get some exp.

Ya, when I first went back to this game I forgot everything except this. Haha.
Before I came into this thread I had this song in my head pretty much all day long:
and I have NO IDEA WHY!
DW1 is awesome. This game captivated my whole existence as a 5 year old, even though I never got far until I was a little older. My earliest, most vivid memory from ~1990 is fighting slimes outside the first town with my mom and brother watching.
I love the games (own all 9+ swords) and have all the soundtracks. I even have all the gbc and some snes repros!
It is a great series. It is funny reading this thread, as I told my buddy today that I plan on a play through of all 9 + swords starting later this week. Very under rated series. 3 will always be my favorite, while 2 I think is cool but the AI in it is so intense, that it always makes me dread playing it. This series has THAT much of an impact! Wish me luck!

Old Man: You cannot win with those weapons, return to me later.
