Dragon Warrior II

  • Use it. It should cast an attack spell of some sort.
  • I tested it outside of combat but I forgot to try it in combat!
  • While I love DW II,it is pretty unforgiving at times. It seems like the enemies who can cast beat and defeat or can perform the devastating attacks had more success with it than anyone in your party. I love the storyline, but it is easy to lose sight of what exactly you are supposed to do in spots. And your party members die way too easily.
  • I just bought a copy of this for $4 today. I've never played the second one.
  • I'm still having fun with this one. While the game does indeed "open up" once you get the ship, I have yet to be completely without direction. The town which gives you the ship points you to the sunken treasure and to Tantagel Castle. From there the web of locations appears to spread all throughout, with my most recent information showing me the path to Hargon.

I did spend an extraordinary amount of time trying to find the sunken treasure. The directions I was given were simply "the north", but when you are not using a map, you don't know where north ends and south begins. This gave me an incentive to draw a crude map of the world. I sailed around, noting down landmarks and making a rough sketch of the continents and islands. Finally I was able to get my bearings and search "north". In the end, I discovered that the sunken treasure was in a much more obvious place than I expected.

I have acquired one crest and I am now after another, which is guarded by many of what I consider to be the most annoying enemy I have encountered in either game so far. The Gorgon.

My worst nightmare. They do almost no damage. They do, however, repeatedly cast Increase, Surround, Defense, and Sleep. The worst part is their defense is already very high, so even when my party does hit, anyone but my main character only deals one damage. Did I mention that spells appear to fail about 80% of the time against these? So, these waves of Gorgons with a measly ~20HP take five minutes per battle.

This game is immense compared to the first. I can see how someone might get overwhelmed, especially once you acquire the ship. However, once I drew my map, the world actually isn't that large. I have been taking notes of any important statements by townsfolk and mapped out the teleporter system. I also took notes for the first game, but mainly just the prices of items in towns and where I needed keys. I am currently at 4 pages of notes and maps for this game.
  • Tower Of The Moon and The Lighthouse are brutal. The "Headhunter" enemy when you meet them for the first time are also brutal and like to gang up on the Princess alot.
  • So the in-game clue said to play the flute in a remote room inside a tower on an island to get a crest. I find a tower on an island. I find plenty of remote rooms, but none reveal anything when I play the flute. Finally I explore the entire thing and do indeed acquire a crest, but it has nothing to do with the flute. WTF? So I take a quick glance at the guide to see where the hell I was, and they call it the "lighthouse"? No where in the game did anyone refer to this as the lighthouse. It looks like a tower!

I was starting to get really frustrated with this place, because I could easily fight anything inside except for Firefly Dragons or whatever they are called. They would come in packs of four or five, and breathe fire on my whole crew. I couldn't even last three rounds. I tried running, but sometimes I would get unlucky.

I also literally stumbled across the water crest. I have no idea how anyone relatively new to these sort of games would ever find it.

So far, I have the moon, water, and stars crest. I have clues to the life crest and sun crest.

I alternate between loving this game and wanting to never play it again. If it wasn't for the spell Repel, I would have put the game away a long time ago. Sailing around would be a nightmare if you had to deal with encounters.

Forgive me for cutting up your post.

I also find making maps and notes to be extremely enjoyable while I'm playing games like this. The sense of accomplishment eclipses what I would get if I just looked at guides and then well after you complete the game the notes/maps help bring back fond memories.

  • I am now trying to find a decent place to lvl up. Most monsters do not give great xp outside of Rhone. I currently just finished the Lighthouse and Moon Tower, so I have the Sea Cave next. Maybe I will lvl there.

On a side note, the Staff Of Thunder glitch does NOT work in the Remix version. Money is not too hard to get, but still there goes my cash cow.
  • Have now emptied all of the Cave To Rhones treasures. I am proceeding to grind my lvls which will take a bit. Luckily, I was able to kill a Metal Babble so that helped with that. Not looking forward to when I get out of here.
  • I have shelved the game. It's not bad, but it's no Dragon Warrior. I get annoyed by "random" design decisions. When I opened a jail containing a couple Gremlins (?), I just happened to search the corner of the room. If I hadn't done that, I would still be wandering the world looking for that crest. There is nothing in-game to suggest that you should search that jail.

I also went all over looking for a "fire monolith". I expected it to be a monolith surrounded by fire. Or maybe a monolith with a lot of fire inside. Nope. Apparently, it's just one of the random monoliths which has a small single fire inside. Of course there are at least two such monoliths. I also didn't even know it was a "monolith" because I had never stepped outside.

That was the breaking point. I don't mind fetch quests, or having to travel a lot. But forcing me to just randomly search areas for items laying on the ground is too much. I actually enjoyed this type of search in Dragon Warrior where I was given directions, or even in this game where they mentioned a certain floor of a certain tower. I won't go into how I still had to guess which tower, because that is the only time its referred to by name.

The other thing that broke my back was the battles. I don't have ADD or something which causes me to get bored easily, but if you want me to fight everything to level up, don't make the battles last forever. Monsters calling for backup, putting my party to sleep/unconscious, having insane spell/attack defense don't require any more skill to beat. Just more time and luck.
  • Too bad to hear you gave up. Alot of people do on this particular title. Me included back in the day. reason I have not done it again is I will be damned if it is going to kick my ass again. Will I ever play it again after this run? Most likely no. But I want to play and beat them all over again, so this one has to go! Besides, #3 is after this, and it is AWESOME on the snes. Plusit is my personal favorite.
  • Btw, made it to Rhone! i am lvling up here, as each battle yields at least 1k xp. Bad part is these monsters are brutal. They hit hard, use explodet alot and defeat spells alot. But other than that, with careful planning, they are manageable. I should have this beat by the end of the week if I grind hard enough.
  • DQ2 beaten!

That make 1 and 2 done. Finally I beat 2! Now to start my DQ3 snes cart!
