How do YOU play a RPG?

  • I grind like a motherfucker, that's how. Even though it's a fun challenge to reach the end boss at a lower level and sweat out the victory, I derive far more satisfaction from showing up with all the best weapons, armor and stats, then pounding the ever-loving snot out of the end-boss as though it were an exercise in baking cupcakes. Every single character had a set of fully-leveled Phoenix/Final Attack materia before I even approached Sephiroth. I spent a year in the sunken ship, morphing enemies into stat boosters with Yuffie. I mastered the damned basketball game in the Golden Saucer.

I've done the same to pretty much every other RPG I've played. Needless to say, I'm rather selective about which ones I play these days, since I just don't have the kind of time I did when I was 20. I'm still working my way through the lost spaceship dungeons in Rogue Galaxy, going for full hunting mastery points. I know it sounds crazy to a lot of people but I genuinely enjoy grinding through games.

This is also the reason I got banned from local Pokemon tournaments. Too many moms complaining that their twelve year-old never stood a chance. I wasn't a sore winner or anything, and even offered to give a few kids my level 100 Pokemon when it was visibly apparent that they felt crushed inside. But angry moms will be angry moms and rather than let me help their kid become better, they were just interested in spiting me. The bans never lasted forever, just a few months - long enough for the soccer moms to feel as though justice had been dealt. I'd return later, pull my punches, take second or something and let the little kids have their moment. I did cross paths with an older girl who championed her team's inability to lose. I took her down, though it was close. I think she was more pissed than she let on; I asked her to dinner and she was pretty sharp in her refusal. No biggie, my Starmie and I had a pleasant evening at Subway instead.

i would be destraught if you killed me at pokemon
nah but u should just go to one with a bunch of magicarp level 100 then see if their moms get mad :

  • Funny you should mention that. As a joke, I once put a level 100 Magikarp on my tournament team. Of course, it got its fins whipped but everyone present thought it was a hilarious move. Everyone talks about it but nobody ever goes through with the Deathkarp.
  • haha ive never gotten into pokemon tournament, i dont even know if they have them around where i live, but i prefer to hack my pokemon games just to make my friends jelous
  • Dive just in and start playing. Walkthru's ruin the game IMO, since it's following someone else's strategies. The best part of RPG's is walking around aimlessly, talking to people to get clues on where you need to go, and hunting for treasures. I just started playing Lunar: The Silver Star last night, and that's basically what I had to do for the first hour and a half - walk around, talk to people, grind up some levels, and walk around the world map. Also, learning the gameplay mechanics is usually taught in game, so I don't bother reading the manuals. Actually, I think I just read FF3's manual for the first time ever last week, and I had the game since I was 12 (though I did lose my CIB copy when I was 18 or so). But yea... put the game in, turn it on, and have at it.
  • Usually I just start playing. What tends to annoy me is getting through the long drawn out intro story in old school RPG's. Many of them don't even let you skip it. Only if I really get into a tough spot do I consult a walkthrough on the net. This is also how I approach old school point and click adventures.
  • I usually just start up the game and play. I only check FAQs and walkthroughs once I've beaten the game to make sure I didn't leave anything essential out and very rarely is that the case. Sure, I might have left out the übersword but if the second best was good enough to behead the evil bad dude, then why bother?

On the other hand, if Ieft out a sidequest string, then I tend to return to my saved game.
  • with one hand while i shoot up with heroin
  • I'm finding that RPGs work best when you set your own goals instead of going the power level / completionist route. Some treasures or abilities just aren't worth getting, and some ways of playing are just too overpowered and feel like cheating. Nowadays I like seeing how fast I can complete the game while using the utmost efficiency!

While this is a good, and fun way, to get through a game, some RPG's like FF3/6 is fun to glitch Gau, get 255 Illumina Swords, Merrit Awards, Economizers, Gem Boxes, and Minerva's and make your character immune to physical and magical attacks. It's also fun to beat the snot of out Kefka with 1 person as well
  • I remember playing the NES Dragon Warrior series. The instructions and quick guides were awesome. I used to read through all those with a flashlight when my parents finally made me go to bed.
  • I really appreciate all the insight from everyone. I still haven't started Star Ocean...Monster World IV for the Genesis got in the way...
  • As for me, I'll usually play most of my first run through an RPG without any outside help (I don't even read the manual ). I explore like crazy, and I level-grind like crazy, and I usually find 80-90% of "hidden" items without consulting a guide. Later in the game, I may resort to a guide just to check on something, perhaps comparing my current stats with the expected stats for that point in the game (and usually coming out a few levels ahead). In a second run, should I play through a game more than once, I'll utilize whatever resources are available. Any subsequent runs for me are just fun runs, and may involve sequence breaking (rarely) or tuning stats or equipment differently (such as running through Super Mario RPG unarmed...yes, I've done it before...beat Smithy at Level 21 unarmed ).
  • I don't. Maybe someday...
  • after I attack I mash the A button...
