Need a little advice on how to progress

Hey all!

I've finally got some time on my hands and started playing Chrono Trigger for the SNES, which I bought from a member here. I'm a little bit "stuck" at the moment. Just finished a part called "The Time Egg" and just got instructions on how to fight Lavos and what appear to be some side-quests. At this point all characters are about level 35, Crono, Lucca and Marle have all the abilities they can learn. Any suggested order I should try to complete the side-quests in, before fighting Lavos? Any recommended level I should be in before fighting Lavos?

Bought my self a repro of Final Fantasy V for the SNES. This is, of course, a fan translation. Everything have been fairly easy and manageble until I reached Mua Forest. I just can't beat that darn crystal-ish boss inside that tree. I'm level 35 with my characters. Have a Mustic Knight/Knight, Ninja/Samurai, Blue Mage/White Mage and Time/Summoner/Black Mage. Any special tactics I should use on this boss? GilToss does about 5200 damage points. The easiest (and the most boring) way would probably to grind more gil, so that the attack does more damage and hopefully one-hit the boss?

It's my first time playing through both these games. Any suggestions is highly appreciated.

  • Your best bet with the order of side quests to hit up in Chrono Trigger, is to load up a nice guide on GameFAQs, and just look at which order they would recommend. I remember reading one, and getting a real good order on how to do things. I know that there are a couple easy short ones, like the Robo one in the Mystic times.

I haven't beaten FF5 in a loooong time, so I can't give much advice there
  • In Chrono Trigger, whatever you do, don't do The Black Omen until last. It'll take you to Lavos when you're done with it. I personally never found leveling to be an issue in CT, but I would suggest getting the Triple Tech attacks before taking him on. Final Kick with Crono, Marle, and Ayla always seemed to be pretty strong for me. Doing all the sidequests should get you all of the character's final weapons as well as some great armor, which will help you immensely.

Another cool thing is Ayla gets better weapons as she levels higher. Around 75 or so, she gets Iron Fist instead of Fist. Somewhere in the 90's she gets Bronze Fist, and with that, each time she gets a critical hit, it'll do 9999 damage. But you'll need multiple playthroughs to level that high.

Edit:  you'll want to equip status-protecting items when taking on Lavos.  He loves the Chaos ability.
  • The Black Omen is great for leveling...do it in each time period from the future back...

if your jobs are mastered in ff5 go freelance your stats will be higher
  • I wouldn't suggest doing the Black Omen until last. Other than that, don't worry about the preferred order. Like in most classical JRPGs, equipment holds infinitely more merit than levels do, which these side quests provide abundantly.

Found a nice guide, thanks! Turns out I've already begun on one of the sidequests.

I assume that is what the "New Game+" is for? Cool to know, thanks for the info.
I knew all those status-protecting items would come in handy at some point. Saved all items I've come across.

Didn't know that! I'm in the progress of mastering Knight, White Mage, Samurai and Black Mage. Will change them to freelance when that is done, then.

Allright, will do the other quests first, then do the Black Omen as the very last thing.

When a crystal gets down to about half HP, it starts using very powerful spells. If you're using multi-target attacks, like gil toss, that can be a recepe for disaster.

So you need to figure out each crystal's weakness and hammer away at them one at a time.

More gil would not make gil toss stronger, I don't think, but you would be abe to use it more times at full power.

If you're feeling the fight is too tough and you just want to be cheap, take about 3000 off each one, then use gil toss. Or use gil toss twice in a row. You will need more than 1 samurai though
  • In CT, New Game+ not only helps you level more and get items multiple times, there are also multiple endings. Once you finish it the first time, during New Game+ you have the ability to take on Lavos pretty much at any time. Depending on when you take him on again, you'll get different endings. Where you are in the story determines what ending you get.

Try it the first time you get to the Millennial Fair when you have only Crono and Marle, if you can!!

Ha, I've never tried that, but it sounds like it wouldn't be too difficult.  I just may try it.

Well, now I feel kinda silly... Probably should've realized that by now, thanks for the heads up! This is one amazing game, quite keen on completing it. Thus, I'm a bit hasty in some of my decisions.

So "New Game+" let me continue on a new game, but with my levels intact from the normal "New Game"? I probably should've gotten the manual for the game when I bought it...

Man, that's crazy! I got killed quite easy at the point I'm at now, hehe. Will sure try that my self if I ever get that far.
  • For FF5, just get the crystals down to under 5000 HP, since you said Gil Toss hurts them all 5200. Then use Gil Toss and win. However, don't get them under 3000 HP, as that's apparently when they start casting deadly spells (I'm looking at a FAQ on GameFAQs). The fight's not too hard if you play it right.

As for CT, just so you know, the Black Omen is not considered a side quest. Beating it advances you to the final chapter, and you have to get to the final chapter to get NG+.

Yeah, you can definitely wail on Lavos with max stats. The nice thing about it is it's not too much of a grind to get your characters maxed out unlike some other RPGs.

It lets you keep all your items that you've collect too.  So, when you go to finish rainbow rock quest or whatever it's called, take the 3 prism helms instead of the 1 prism dress.  in new game+, you can get a prism dress.

It's not that hard.  Just take a bunch of healing items and use illuminare and confuse (on the right pod) .  great ending too,
