Playstation Network down.

Alright, some of you know that the Playstation Network has been down for several days now and is not coming back up for quite awhile apparently. I get hassled ALL the time from my friends because I have a PS3 and not a 360. Mainly due to because the 360 I had got the red ring so I didn't want to waste my money. Now I'll never stop hearing how the 360 is the "better" system.

I sometimes really hate how ignorant my friends can be. Does it REALLY matter that online is down? For games like Call of Duty and Killzone, yes, it's a big deal. Luckily, my life does not revolve around multiplayer games. I think my friends get lost in the present and forget about the past. None of our childhood game systems had online. The PS2 had minor online play, and the Xbox some. Earlier than that, forget about it. I understand times have changed, but a game can still be perfect without online play. That's the point I'm trying to make here.

Look at the NES games that revolutionized gaming, were they online? Obviously not. More recently, games like Kingdom Hearts and God of War (two of my favorite series), were they online? Nope. They were still great games. I understand that some people just want to play with other people, and that online is the best way to do that, I really do. But for me, online play doesn't really matter.

I really don't know why I made this topic, or if people are actually going to read it. If you do, great, thanks for reading. If you respond, thanks for the comments. Maybe this will spark a discussion, at least, there are some people who would actually TALK about this, then argue whether the 360 can kick the PS3's ass now.

  • In todays world, if a game offers online, odds are the single player probably isn't worth playing. It's not as good. And the 360 is a better system. But a few years ago when it came out it wasn't built well. But it is a better system.

I don't pay for a game unless it has damn good multiplayer. Any game that is $60 and doesn't offer a 2400-hour campaign is a waste to me.
  • you get what you pay for, and psn is free so. Well there you go.
  • I'm kinda pissed that I can't redeem my extra Mortal Kombat outfits. Other than that, I could care less.
  • Also people that argue about which system is better and all that shit has no life, people should just buy what they want and leave it at that. I have a 360 and no ps3 but i know the ps3 has its pros over the xbox its just not for me.
  • I have always been pro Playstation just for the fact that the PS3 can do a thousand more things than the XBOX 360 can. The graphics when compared side by side are def. on PS3's side. Trophy system is 10 times better than Achievments and gamer points. My cousin and I actually had this discussion not long ago (He has actually been trying to convert me to 360)After he got his PS3 he finally realized that in fact the PS3 is by far the superior system. As for the online play, I like online playing but there is only so much you can do online before it becomes repetitive and boring.
  • The 360's graphics are the same as 360's. 1080p. The 360 can do nearly 2x more detail, though, if optimized. And yeah, truthfully, it doesn't really matter today. Games on both consoles don't take advantage of their good points, they don't have time. I just like to compare hardware.

Tophies...achievements.....I don't care about those. I don't see how either one is better. I'll give you a good example of a feature PS3 is missing....homebrew/cheap indie games. PSN is free. Okay. Great! But the Xbox 360 parties-like system is inexcusable to not have on a system. It's the best thing about Xbox 360 by far and worth every penny of $50 a year.

Oh well, lets just end it there.... I can't imagine the people that completely skip a games campaign and never play it. I always play through campaigns first. I know a lot don't. I bet having PSN down for a week or so will help players by making them go back and catch up on some trophies.
  • The biggest reason I love my PS3 is simply because of Blu-ray. I've always said they were the same system, besides the Blu-ray part. It really comes down to what exclusives you like more IMO.
  • Yeah. How is MAG , now that you say that. I've heard mainly bad reviews, but I don't trust gaming sites 100%. And what advantage does Blu-Ray have over downloaded media? It was a great idea, but just not early enough, since it looks like next gen might not even have physical media.

I thought MAG was a fun game, I don't listen to reviews that much because most of the time if the reviews say the game isn't too good, I find the game good. :/
  • I usually don't listen to reviews either. I never played MAG, never really into FPS...besides COD. I just like the blu-ray quality better. I like having the actual product too. I kind of collect movies as well as games...so yeah...
  • I've been wanting to play, but nobody I know has PS3's but my cousin, and he has no online at all. :/ Yeah, I'm into COD/Battlefield. More Battlefield, unless my team mates are bad. And yeah, blu-ray is nice, but I guess I can't tell on my 720p CRT TV. Although I am not into movies at all.

Lets cut down to the chase....Play Crysis 2 on PS3/360. Tell me that is a bad game with bad graphics. I'll tell you what....if anyone is to hate, it's PC gamers.
  • I own both systems. I found pro and cons on both of em. For example if I want to play a first person game I want to play it on 360 because I more comfortable with there controllers. If I want watch a movie I usually use my PS3 because of there controllers. What I hate the most when people talk about which system has better graphics. I can care less. I pay 60 just for 8 bit graphics on any system. But I do wish they bring back PlayStation network because I would like to play MODNation Racer online now.
  • Ha yeah I understand with Crysis 2. But with exclusives, I like God of War, so naturally PS3 is more for me. I also like Uncharted. It basically comes down to exclusives, like I said.

I just got that game about a week ago, it is pretty cool.
  • I've been wanting to try MODnation Racers haha. And yeah, graphics don't matter to me either. If it looks great, awesome, looks like shit but has a great story and gameplay? Even better.
  • It is all funny to me. I rarely have time to play video games but when I bought my PS3 when it was releases it was to play Metal Gear, Twisted Metal, and Socom. Well, I get the new Socom and the day I get a chance to play online the server went down.

Yeah your friends are ignorant and very unintelligent fanboy jerks.  The PSN is down because even larger ignorant and petty childish jerks are attacking it as a revenge attack over Sony suing George Hotz over his leaking the PS3 key to the door of running whatever code you like and so on (free pass to piracy type stuff.)  They're also pissed with all the court orders trying to seize anyones IP info who went to the site, viewed it and downloaded the data for more prosecution.  The group feels that no matter what all info should be free, nothing should have limits, and since Sony did what they did everyone will suffer for it.  Sony isn't being hurt as much as all the gamers who can't play online, or all the nagging fail screens you get trying to get netflix up before doing a movie.  They will if it goes into weeks and months suffer as they'll have to refund playstation plus peoples funds as they can't use anything, and the bad press in the minority population of gamers who follow media loudmouths crapping all over the incident.

Just remind them that no matter how many upgrades the 360 got, it still is a piece of of it that tanks at an unacceptable rate and with all their billions their solution was a kill switch to try and spare the hardware.    It really doesn't matter that online is down unless you want to shoot someone in an FPS online or the like, most games still are better experiences offline alone or with a group, but to your pack of nerdy shut-in buddies if they can't get online and shit talk while unloading ammo into something somehow that makes a game not a game and not worth their time in their little pea brains.  You're right, they're lost in the present trend of sucking hours into online and offline being crap mentality.  I'd just ignore em.  Still some of the best and highly rated games are still OFFLINE titles as you pointed out.  I guess you could point that out to them, and if they argue that too, then well you know how far their minds are gone off the reality train and should leave it at that.
  • Yeah I actually have a bum of a friend who has hated life these past few days. He's the unemployed type that spends at least 10 hours online gaming everyday and had been waiting for SOCOM ever since the 3rd one. He got in a day or two and now he's been so bored lately that he really doesn't know what to do with himself.

The game libraries are what made me choose a 360 over the PS3. I could care less about who has the slightly better graphics, the Blu-Ray, or any of that jazz.

God of War made me consider getting a PS3 but I never did. Unfortunately, I think Twisted Metal 4 will be the death of me and I'll buy the system for that game if it gets decent reviews.

Resolution has nothing to do with it. The PS3's video card uses its VRAM (shared) in an entirely different way than the card in the 360, which allows for a bit more flexibility as far as detail goes.

Also, the "you get what you pay for" argument makes no sense. XBL has been down far more than the PSN; in fact, for 11 days straight back at the tail end of 06. That's worse in my opinion, since it's a paid service.

I'm behind them; and I'm not a fan of any system over the others. I own all 3 current gen consoles and actually play the Wii more than both the 360 and PS3, but I'm all for the idea of Sony taking this intrusion seriously and re-examining their infrastructure in order to keep my information secure; even if it IS at the cost of a few easily angered, impatient, and greedy gamers.
  • Ah yes, the online multi-player selling point. I can't stand that anymore. I think I've played MGS4 online, and that was pretty damn fun. Besides that, I don't think I've touched anything else. The way things are so hyped over online multi-player just bugs me haha There are games that come out for mainly this reason, and I guess if it sells, then it sells. From vids I've seen on Youtube, and a few times on MGS4 online, even, it just seems to be a way for people to say things to each other that they wouldn't otherwise say face-to-face.
  • This is such a nice thing to wake up to guys haha. Thanks for the conversations. Tannoki hit it on the head I think, along with the other users.

And yeah, Sony is taking this seriously, it may be down for a while, but who knows, they may make it better than it was ever before. The only thing that hurts me is not being able to stream Netflix =/

    You still can.

When it asks you to sign in and you get the error, just back out and you can stream normally. Netflix doesn't require PSN logon, just an active net connection.
  • I generally don't do online gaming except with some friends of mine who live out of state. I've never really cared for it honestly. I'm not a very competitive gamer and frankly I don't care for the online multiplayer culture. It's like the worst of internet culture amplified by 1000. I really am a curmudgeonly old man when it comes to this topic, but give me a compelling single player game any day over any of the best multiplayer out there. It's just not for me I guess. As for which system is superior to the other, Who the hell cares? If it plays games and you have fun with them then it doesn't matter.

I'm on the side of sony taking down their servers to protect their users' information, even at the the immediate inconvenience of their users. Sure it puts a lot of people out at the moment, but if you want to blame someone blame Anonymous.
  • Yeah I'm with Roth, the whole online multiplayer thing as a selling point and media makeout bimbo is beyond tiring. Get over it and yourselves, you're not the key feature, you're not the answer to gaming, you're nothing but just an option. It's a teeny piece of the pie that gets too much hype and face time considering much of the games out there considered in the 'best' area don't even bother with it or do so very minimally or as a tacked on after thought. It seems often to be there for the most immature of the gaming community, and the cowardly too. It's a spot to go online, gloat, act like a bitch, say shit that would get you beaten or stabbed/shot in person, or to be a show off and act like a turd to record it and show tiny your penis is on youtube or the like. Take Uncharted 2, sure it has a good MP game, but is that what it was sold on? Hell no. It was the 'wanna be a movie quality' type game with the insane visuals and gameplay backing an very well written story.

Sony needs to drop the servers and purge everyone's credit card info just in case. I want to log in and wipe that off there and I can't which pisses me off. Outside of that I don't care as I can use the system as I want to anyway.

Robot, I already said in my last post you can use netflix. Just let it check (and it does it twice) and let it bitch it can't get on PSN and just hit CIRCLE to get off the screen. Netflix will come up and runs smoothly as I watched SALT like 2-3 days ago.
  • Sorry Tanooki I must have missed the Netflix thing in your post! Now I really don't care with PSN. I think Sony's doing the smart thing.

He speaks truth.  It will whine about not being able to get on PSN, and after a couple checks, it just boots up like normal.
  • You know I'd be pissed off, but I don't like doing console multiplayer games and nothing interesting enough has popped up I'd blow $10 on over PSN in a good long while. I wanted Angry Birds like 2 weeks ago when it was like $2.50, but they would only allow a minimum of a $10 charge or some crap so I canceled it. I've been curious what the big deal is over that stupid phone game.
  • I like the interesting conversation about online games. I got COD:MW2 and went online with it thinking I might as well get used to it cause everybody is doing it. After about a month the novelty wore off and it gets really boring for me quick. Having the PSN down has not affected me at all, just that I can't sync my new trophies. To clarify my earlier post, I think it is the exclusive titles that make me a fan of the PS3 over 360. Maybe I just haven't given the Xbox a fair shake, but the media bar on the PS3 just makes everything seem easier to do on the PS3.

The 360 has better RAM for their graphics pipeline and also has 1.99x more polygons-per-second, gicing 2x the tetxures. It's not better in a 3D game world aspect at all. Can you tell me how their hardware has any more flexibility? I'd love to hear it. The PS3's graphics are a joke compared to 360. But Like I said, only developers working on one console know that. You always hear developers talking about the PS3 and how it's good. But then, the 360 game is the same thing. You know why they talk about the PS3 more? Because it's harder to use and more limited, so they talk about it more because it's the challenge of making any game look good on two consoles.

And I guess I'm in a different boat for a different type of gamer. I could care less about the games campaign. Heck, no campaign? Even better. The multiplayer selling point is a lot better than a single player selling point to millions of people. Even though after a month it might get old [Black ops, that game sucked.] but you'll still get 10x more play time than campaign on any game. I have a bit over 17 days of play on MW2. I don't think I've put that much into every non-multiplayer game ever combined for me.
  • I'm not worried about it personally as I don't game online much, however it makes me hate the people that do this kind of stuff even more. Come out in the real world instead of sitting behind your computer and screwing over people that just want to play games online if you have a problem. I really hate hackers.
